It is a pleasure to reread classics like The Secret Garden and A Little Princess, but how wonderful to read novels that I have never heard of by this author. Not all come close to the mastery of her best known works, but this is a writer worth exploring, both as reader and as an author. A look at her biography will have you amazed at her peripatetic life, incredible amount of writing, and the friends she made. She was both British and American. I love her 19th century sensibility, a belief in the ability of hearts to heal and love to conquer. There is so much hope in her core. Her protagonists move from the natural selfishness of childhood to a broader view. Burnett writes vivid descriptions of poverty, ghettos, travel, hurt, chases, food, starvation, and human trancendance and cruelty. I highly recommend this inexpensive collection.
Of course these are dated, being written so long ago when social and moral expectations were different - but Burnett's works express tolerance and understand at a time when other authors raged against various groups. Her classic stories are still being used as the basis for so many stories today. As you read thru these you will experience the ahah moments every so often as you realize that this is an original version of a plot you have read so often in modern stories. These are easy reading as the plots are familiar though placed in a different time. I love them
Frances Hodgson Burnett is one of my all-time favorite authors of children's literature. I read many of her books to our children when they wore growing up, and they sat on the edge of their chair with interest. I read Rackety-Packety House to them after dinner one summer. My husband listened right along with the kids. My husband had to work evenings some weeks so he missed some of the story. I found him reading the chapters he missed so he would be ready for the new ones the next evening.
Really, Frances Hodgson Burnett is for kids aged 3-99 and beyond. You really cannot go wrong investing in books written by her. Enjoy!
How could anyone not give this megapack 5 stars? 74p - just under 15 shillings in old money - for 40 stories is amazing value. I bought it to reread Secret Garden which I loved and read so many times as a child. And I have another 49 to enjoy too. The proofreading in Secret Garden was excellent and it was good to see a message at the start of the book about where to report any errors that the reader might spot. So often kindle books fail on proofreading. But not the story I read. Thank you for offering this collection .
I've only read a few so far but loved taking a trip down memory lane. The secret garden is one of my all time faves and is good to be able to read it again. I have it in the hardback copy I have had since I was little but I struggle to hold it up now and have to have the curtains closed due to light sensitivity so having it on the kindle means I can read in the dark. There are quite a few I haven't read before so will be good to read them as well.
