Sneaky Burrito
4.0 out of 5 starsloved the exploration and world building
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 19, 2017
I bought this when it was on special and picked it up without knowing pretty much anything about it. But it drew me in quickly and after I finished, I immediately bought the next volume, and those are two great indicators in terms of how I should rate a book.

The protagonist, Sabriel, hails from a place called the Old Kingdom but has grown up and been educated in a boarding school across a Wall demarcating the Old Kingdom from a place that sounds a lot like the England of right around WWI (electric lights and telephones were available, and tanks had just been invented). This is very much a coming-of-age story, even though Sabriel has just finished her schooling (and so might be considered an adult). She has lived a fairly sheltered life at the school but is suddenly put into a position where she must venture out into the (to her) unknown Old Kingdom.

As such, Sabriel is a good proxy for the reader for exploring the Old Kingdom. She knows a little, but has been protected from much more. She realizes quickly how little about the Old Kingdom, or even about magic, she knows, and that makes her sympathetic (however, it seems with the appropriate amount of help, she can easily overcome her limitations). She has a couple of companions on her quest -- a cat who is not what he seems, and a young man who goes by the name of Touchstone. You do learn a bit more about each of them, as well, as the story goes on.

I felt like Sabriel's story followed a common pattern -- a young person is forced into undertaking a quest she's not really ready for, and yet she's the only person who can complete it. She rebels against it, but it's her destiny. (In Sabriel's case, rebellion largely involves refusing to be called by a title that is rightfully hers, and also in defining the quest as a mission to save her father when really something else is going on, too.)

My favorite part in this book was the journey. There is a lot of traveling and exploration. Normally I hate such things, but they were done really well here, and the surroundings changed in a way that constantly presented new challenges, which is something most authors don't get right. (I feel that Mr. Nix DID get it right, though.) This was a sort of world where I was interested in learning about the environment and history, and I thought it was nicely woven in to the overarching story. This also speaks to worldbuilding, of course, which I thought was quite good.

I don't have much to say about the writing. For me, anyway, it slid into the background and did its job of telling the story without being obnoxious. There were no repeated tics or verbal crutches that jumped out at me.

Magic was interesting and well-developed. There seemed to be three sorts. Charter Magic is basically the good (orderly?) stuff and can be used for protection, healing, etc. Necromancy can be good or bad, depending on who is wielding it and to what purpose (e.g., raising an army of the Dead or sending the Dead back into Death where they belong), and Necromancy can be constrained by Charter Magic. Free Magic is wild and perhaps unpredictable but can be harnessed. There are also some people who can see the future, but that may be an ability conferred by Charter Magic.

A few things didn't work for me, but they weren't dealbreakers. There is a romance that was predictable from a mile off and, in my mind, not set up as much as it should have been. Also, and I'm still not sure how I feel about this, but the final confrontation was odd. It was more of a series of tasks/confrontations. One takes place in Death and was over too quickly for my liking. The feeling of fear was never really all that palpable for me as few to no obstacles were encountered. The next confrontation follows immediately on its heels and I did feel there was a little more at stake, but it is also over quickly. The third confrontation was the biggest, and even in itself consisted of two incidents at separate sites. There were casualties, but I was never really in doubt that certain parties would survive. I did think the final resolution was clever and nicely set up based on events earlier in the book.

Overall, I was invested enough in the characters to see the book through (and quickly, I might add). I loved the world building and the journey and all the little details like the various bells used in Necromancy. I thought the magic system was great and I think there is a lot of potential for the future books that are set in this world.

3.0 out of 5 starsVery well drawn fantasy elements and a likable, credible young heroine.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 22, 2021
First published in 1995, this is the opening book in the Old Kingdom fantasy series. There's something that feels British in a slightly old-fashioned way in both the diction and the setting (the latter suggesting post-war Britain), this despite the fact that Garth Nix is Australian, not British. It reminded me of reading Alan Garner's fantasy books many years ago. Since I enjoyed Alan Garner very much, this inclined me favorably toward the book.

Spoilers ahead. The book's principal character is Sabriel, a young woman who comes from a family whose duty is to return those who will not stay dead to Death. Sabriel quickly finds herself on an ominous quest, journeying both into the fantastical Old Kingdom and, yes, into Death. The fantasy elements are very well-drawn. Various elements -- the Wall, the bells, the Paperwings, Mogget, the world of Death -- are memorable, distinctive, atmospheric.

However, while I found Sabriel quite likable, I didn't sink into the narrative. Or rather, I would briefly sink into it, and then a phrase or a point-of-view shift would pop me back out. Maybe I was more preoccupied by external things than usual, or maybe something in the style distracted me, or maybe the book isn't intended to be immersive in the first place.

3.5 out of 5 chiming stars.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

1.0 out of 5 stars Book was described as "like new", but has water damage

(My one star rating is not a story review - the story is awesome, and I highly recommend the entire series).
I ordered a used copy described by the seller as "like new", and the book is water damaged. It was sealed in plastic and in a dry, undamaged amazon box, so the water damage did not happen during shipping. This is why I hesitate to purchase used books - it seems hit or miss on whether a book's condition is accurately described by the seller. This was clearly not in "like new" condition.

1.0 out of 5 stars A tiny hardback book way overpriced

My complaint is with the book format, not the story. I thought I was getting a "full sized" hardback book. I was so shocked when I opened the package. I actually received a hardback book that was smaller than a small paperback book. I never even bothered opening the book. I immediately set up the return. This was such a disappointment. I ordered a different version of the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring book
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 15, 2015
I was looking forward to reading this book as I love escaping into a good fantasy and the reviews looked good and story sounded intriguing. Unfortunately this book was a big disappointment.

As others have said, the characters are completely flat, there's just nothing to them and as such I felt no connection to them at all. The interaction between the characters seemed rigid and cold. Each 'baddie' was the same as the next. I very nearly didn't even bother finishing this book but I hate leaving things unfinished so saw it through to the end. I could go on but to be honest I'm getting bored writing a review about how boring the book was. It's a real shame as I was hoping for a really good story here! Oh well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a great book
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 8, 2017
This book is probably the worst book I've ever read. The story is slow, boring and so predictable. I didn't even see one single twist. The characters are a yawn as well. I do not recommend this book to immature kids or kids who are under 11 years old.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete lack of emotion...
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 24, 2008
Continuous action, cheap suspense, confusion, flat characters...if you enjoy these sorts of things, then this is a book for you.

This book tells about a young necromancer girl called Sabriel who inherits her father's business of putting the undead to eternal sleep.

This book has one virtue. An imaginative and original (?) take on necromancy.
I've never read a fantasy book wich such onedimensional, uninteresting and bland characters. Do they even have personality? They are dead. Dolls. There's no emotion in this book. You can't care what happens to these characters. Some of the action sequences are somewhat enjoyable but completely trite.

Work has been but into creating this fantasy world but it lacks a finishing touch and its possibly imaginative features are never taken advantage of in the execution.

Come on people! An interesting take on necromancy and controlling undead with the use of bells doesn't warrant a 5 star review!
If you like this kind of cheap, unexplained sense of mystery and continuous action then this is a book for you. On the other hand if you are searching for a fantasy book with memorable and lovable characters, multilayered plot, emotion and atmosphere then stay the **** away!

PS. I must mention though, that I read the sequel Lirael, and actually liked that a lot. But that book was on a whole different level than this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't waste your time
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 20, 2010
this book is excedingly boring and uneventful. i thought this book sounded intresting enough but i couldnt have been more wrong. i was already 80% into the book when any real excitement came into the story and then we went back to being boring as heck 2 minutes later. characters were probably too logical for a fantasy story and whoever heard of a female heroine falling in love with another character but only spending about 10 minutes with him total?! thats utterly ridiculous. you want my advice? save time and money and dont even bother with this book.
