I've had several iterations of Samsung phones, the S3 was my first smartphone, bought the S4 and now recently purchased the S5. After 2 months my screen stopped responding, as in the display itself was fine but the phone would no longer respond to touch. No big drops or anything so 99% sure it was a defect with the phone. I tried to get Samsung to fix it and they went out of their way to avoid any warranty work. After a short chat with Amazon they sent a replacement, 3 days later I had a new phone. This experience soured me slightly on Samsung, but I still think they make the best value smartphones out there, however I'm 100% sold on Amazon based on their reaction, will be a Prime customer for life. I was a little wary of buying a seemingly discounted smartphone via amazon and not Verizon or directly from Samsung, turned out to be a good decision.

Not new as advertised

Ordered a *NEW* Galsxy S5 Verizon phone in white, recieved it a few minutes ago and popped battery in to make sure all was well. Packaging looked brand new, included everything (headphones, charger, cable, manual, battery) and phone still had protective cover on it, including one on the camera.
After booting up, I noticed a burned-in screen right away! Next thing to do is throw a neat little app called "phone info" for samsung phones. I've attached the last screen which says this phone has been plugged into a charger 712 times!

This phone was shipped and fulfilled by Reliable Communications, I have a replacement coming from Tech Chrome in a couple of days, and am hoping this one is an actual NEW phone, otherwise its going to be shipped right back again!!!

Great new phone w/short battery life

First of all, let me state that I'm a new smartphone user. But I don't feel like I am looking through a naive lens when it comes to giving this phone five stars. It is responsive, versatile and still stylish (even though it is an older model, a Samsung Galaxy 5). I do not feel daunted by the feasibilty and ease-of-use with this phone, and all the functions seem to be working correctly, just like it was a new phone--except one thing. The battery loses its charge relatively quickly, unless you are actually using it for something. In other words, if you leave it on and it is just sitting there, the charge will drop like 3-5% in a matter of a couple of minutes. While on calls, or using the apps, it seems to hold a little more steady, but this deficit makes it difficult to leave the phone on to receive calls.
All in all, I am happy with this, my first smartphone (don't laugh), but I think next time I would buy a newer model in order to get a little more strength of purpose out it. The seller seems responsive, though I don't intend to return it. He also seems a little eager to know my level of satisfaction, hence this review. Tried to be as honest and objective as possible, probably trying to be cheap and purchase an older model was my folly, not that necessarily of the seller, unless stand to be corrected regarding the performance/battery life of all smartphones, maybe this problem is common I do not know. It seems like a lot of functionality for such a small device, maybe it just takes a lot of battery to function as well as it does. Not unhappy, though.

Posted this mid 2018. 2 of my sisters, my wife, & I are all using the S5. It's fast enough, and supports current apps. Unlike some newer phones, it has a micro SD slot - Saves $ & allows me to upgrade when larger chips become available. I'm on my 2nd S5, and no reason to replace it. This cost me about 6% of what an S8 was going to cost from our cell service provider. I don't use a cover, or have insurance on it, because it's relatively cheap to replace. The unprotected screen has yet to get a scratch in it (I do machine shop work, & build/repair things at home). My wife uses a cover, My daughter uses an S7 because it has a better camera, but I'm fine with the S5's. I'm much happier carrying a phone that I don't have to obsess over.

Galaxy S5 > iPhone 6

Much better than the Galaxy S3 I was so used to. I was on the fence about getting the Galaxy S5 or the iPhone 6. I have a Mac, iPad and iPod and still selected the Galaxy phone because of the following benefits:

Expandable Memory - You can put a Mini SD card in the Galaxy to increase the storage space. You cannot with the iPhone.

Removable Battery - In some cases, you may want to or need to take the battery out of your phone. You cannot with the iPhone.

Camera Quality - The Galaxy has a slight advantage with the cameras built into the phone.

Water Resistant - I am outdoors a lot and using my phone around water a lot so it's something that I thought would be a huge plus. I didn't want to put on a bulky case for water resistance; the Galaxy is water resistant and the iPhone is not.

All in all, I really like the S5. I just wish I could have waited a little longer to get the S6!

So far so good. My dad goes through phones like nothing I've ever seen before, so we were glad to find a great deal on a recent Galaxy. His S6 had so many problems, and we hated not having access to the battery, sim card, or sd. We are all glad to go back to the s5. This is a great phone, the sd card is easy to access. That is a huge reason we stick with Galaxy... the expandable storage is great. This seller was good to work with. No problems. Best of all, instead of paying of an 800 dollar phone for 2 years, we just paid outright and own this from the start. It does everything he wants and more.

Camera and Health app are strongest pros

We have had a couple Samsung Galaxy S5 phones for nearly a month now, and mine has grown on me. I'm using the Electric Blue on Verizon Wireless and despite the blue being pretty, it is covered by the case in which I have it protected. I recently received an HTC One M8 and find that one to be much more attractive. The Samsung case is plastic, its biggest flaw in my opinion. Assets over the HTC are the much better camera, keyboard which contains numerals, and removable battery. The HTC has better audio and a more intuitive system navigation for me. The audio on the Samsung is not great and I often do not hear notifications when the phone is placed face upright. With the rear speaker, it's better having the rear facing upright for a clearer sound. As with any Android phone now, it arrives with applications that are unwanted, so I've been able to clear off some but not all. If you are interested in monitoring your steps, exercise and food intake, a very nice app is built in. My only problem with this one is the reminders after I've not used it for a few days. I do like the ability to check the pulse. You have several options for locking your phone, with an interesting fingerprint option. I've not had great luck with this, even saving two different fingerprints, so I'm not currently using it. Battery life on this phone isn't terrible and it isn't great either. I amusing the power saver function and like to know there is an extreme setting should I become in need of truly extending the battery life. Samsung's power ports are their own, imagine a USB with a conjoined smaller twin. I hesitate to recommend using a standard USB cable but really think it would also charge the phone. It's the same port as my daughter's Samsung Galaxy tablet. All in all, I really like the phone and think it's the best I can get right now for camera capabilities. For audio, the HTC wins.

Wow...from an iphone 4S user to this phone. What a difference!! Amazon did their magic..shipped the phone and I received it in two days which happens to be on Veterans Day. They sent me email instructions on how to activate my new phone which worked perfectly. I was ready for an upgrade from Verizon so everything just fell into place. If you are not ready for an upgrade it might be different. The only obstacle in activating the phone was that Verizon has you call a number and verify information. If you don't have another phone handy this can be a problem. I no longer have a land line. I called my son and had him call the number. Old phone was supposed to be off. It worked just fine.
I was planning to upgrade the iPhone but wasn't sure what to get. I just returned from a vacation to the East Coast and knew what I wanted! My kids had Samsungs and they were great. The battery on my iPhone kept quitting on me after 6 hours. I couldn't take some pictures that I wanted. Their phones kept working like energizer bunnies! I kept looking for places to plug in. It was really annoying.
The picture quality is much better on the Samsung. My pics on the iPhone were always dark. The Samsung takes great pics and has settings you can change.
If you have already used smartphones, you'll get used to this one fast. I've only had it about 7 hours and it's easy. It's bigger than the iPhone 4S but not clumsy. I've changed settings, downloaded apps, taken pics, upgraded OS and cruised FB. I still have 66% battery after all that. My iPhone would have had to be plugged in.
The battery and the quality of pics make it for me. Any phone can call or email. In all fairness, I did not even look at the iphone6. Amazon's price on this was too good to pass up. Verizon wanted $199.
I'm very happy with this purchase and with how Amazon has this worked out with Verizon.

Convinced Me to Switch from iPhone

I have six kids. My husband, me and five of my kids use iPhones. My oldest son swears by Samsung. Nowadays the phone companies want to rip you off so when his Samsung Galaxy S3 broke he wanted to upgrade to a newer model but I wasn't going to pay an extra $25 a month on my phone bill, which is already almost $600 a month, to do it. I decided to buy a phone on Amazon and I'm so glad I did. He loves the phone. In fact I love the phone and I'm thinking of switching from my iPhone 6 to this model. I have tachyarrythmia and this phone actually can tell you what your heart rate is. My son has checked my heart rate using his phone on more than one occasion and ran to get me a pill. As far as the features and functions, they are definitely different from the iPhone but not at all harder to use and I don't think I'll miss anything if I change from the iPhone to this model. And it's a much better price. When I'm done with my iPhone I think this model has convinced me to switch to Samsung. More apps. More control. I like it.

AT&T phone without a contract was unlocked

I bought my phone direct from Amazon to avoid the problems other buyers were having with used phones. Mine was brand new, just like I ordered. I bought it for my son because I was fed up with the Trojans and malware that came installed in my other two ultra-cheap Chinese phones. They were impossible to remove. I figured Galaxy wouldn't do that to me, and it hasn't.

So far, so good. This AT&T phone without a contract was unlocked so that it worked as soon as I put in my Tracfone SIM card and added the APN info. Whew! I was hoping I wouldn't have to go through the trouble of getting it unlocked. It also came with an AT&T SIM card, in case we want to do business with AT&T.

My son has not had any problems with this phone. He does all the basics with it, mostly texting. Phone calls to him on my end have been clear and he hasn't complained. He sends MMS photos, which were a problem on his other phone, even with the same SIM card. He likes it, a huge step up from the cheap Chinese knockoffs.

Have had the phone half a day. I agree with most of the positive reviews of the phone and coming from a Droid 3, it took me a while to get the hang of the new interface and download all the apps I had purchased on the Droid. To my surprise, Verizon (or my sdcard) remembered which apps I had purchased and I was able to download and reinstall free of charge. Saved me about $20 in apps alone. Phone is big and easy to read, but not too big, and surprisingly light and thin (remember this morning I was still using my Droid3 brick). Some important observations: 1) The included headphones are totally lacking base and sound washed out. Not even close to the quality of the Creative Zen I was using so I will continue with the Zen. 2) When ordering on Amazon, I chose the "replace a phone on my existing account" option. But the checkout chose to change my data plan and "estimated" I will be paying $40 more a month than I was. Called Amazon and Verizon and the consensus was to let the sale go through and change the plan back when I activate the phone. Well after activating on the phone, the plan did not change. So all is well.
