4.0 out of 5 starsGood read bit confusing
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 30, 2017
All in all this is a good read but it does tend to be a bit confusing. Its also long and drawn out, the main character, Farris, is supposed tobe old enough to travel through new worlds but she cannot be changed by anything ariund her. Just when you think that her attitude about it all is truly seeing through boom goes the kid in her. She tends to seem to young and way to immature for the main character. As for the magical fish well im not even sure but even the fish has more common sense than she does and the fish is older than most of the dirt . im still not sure how the fish gets around, something about fur balls. Anyway its still a good read if you can keep up.

3.0 out of 5 starsA Little too complicated for me
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 12, 2017
This is a very complicated story. A little too complicated for me, actually. But if you get into it and want to see where it ends, it is good to have the complete set of all three books at once; otherwise, you are left hanging halfway down the levels of the world without much understanding.

The writing is good, unencumbered by typos or grammatical errors.

Farris Malhalion undertakes a journey through the seven layers of her world to save her brother Tom who has been kidnapped by creatures from one of the other layers. On her way, she must learn the lessons of life to be able to pass through the various levels.

Farris and Tom’s grandmother has told them tales of ancient days all their lives. There is a story of Javel of Omar, the First Man, who walked this journey to begin with and became a god. His transcendence cracked the sky and the earth and left a power void among the seven kingdoms who had inhabited the surface of the earth before, igniting a war to see who would take over his throne. To stop the war the three Wyrd sisters get the several rulers to agree to call the sky serpent down to restore order, but something goes wrong, and the serpent threatens to destroy all life. The rulers can’t or won’t face him, but Javel’s bastard son, Lolaran Malhalion, who had been a guard of one of the other rulers, volunteered to fight the serpent and led him into the crack in the earth that had been opened when Javel transcended. There they were locked into a chamber deep in the earth to fight until one of them won, meanwhile leaving everybody else in peace.

The people of the other kingdoms were settled into the various layers of the world, with a layer of stone between each group to separate them and keep them from fighting. And a prophecy was set that the heir of Lolaran Malhalion would eventually journey to the chamber where he and Nidhoggdrasil, the serpent were fighting, open the door, and let the winner out.

An earthquake signals that the contest has ended. As it takes place on Tom’s naming day, grandmother declares that he is the chosen one and bestows the key to Lolaran’s prison on him. Farris is deeply resentful that Tom is declared the heir rather than her, as she is the oldest. But when the Paral-Zakdul, a race of brass-armored people, kidnap Tom and run off to the center of the world with him, Farris resolves to pursue them until she gets her brother back.

There are several layers of betrayals and illusions that must be overcome before things can be settled, and nothing is quite what it seems or what you expect.

This author has a promising future. While I am not a huge fan of fantasy fiction, I have to admit this book is the exception. Beautifully written, the author paints a picture in your mind and you see this amazing world unfold.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic tales of horrifying creatures and long lost magic
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 16, 2016
Farris never believed in monsters. These mythical beings were the stuff of children’s dreams, woven into her everyday life, the terrifying backdrop to her absolutely ordinary existance. And her grandmother’s stories were just that: fantastic tales of horrifying creatures and long lost magic, meant to frighten Farris and her younger brother, Tom. When the earth splits open and Tom is kidnapped by the very creatures Farris is so sure never existed, she finds herself delving into the heart of her grandmother’s tales in order to survive.

The Last Man is a testament to modern fantasy. The book is well-paced, the writing is hauntingly beautiful, and the characters are, often unintentionally, funny. The Last Man is a book that settles with you, stays, and keeps you thinking about it long after you’ve closed those last few pages. It took me a long time to finish, perhaps because I was savoring it, and my only regret is that there isn’t more.

Though highly imaginative and vastly different from any other book I’ve encountered, there are a few plot points that, to me, remain unclear. I suspect it’s because I don’t fully comprehend the laws of magic in this world. Perhaps it is something that will be elaborated upon in later novels, or that other readers can easily comprehend. Where the plot remains generally opaque, it’s greatest strengths lies within the characters, particularly Farris.

At sixteen, Farris is exactly what you would expect of any teenager: she’s insolent, naïve, and, most importantly, terrified. She doesn’t find solace in this strange new land of unfamiliar rules, filled with danger and death at every turn. Farris is startlingly realistic even within this magical world, and her fear of the unknown, combined with her blind trust of suspicious characters, marks her as a female character in the midst of fascinating development. I’m very partial to the idea of a character, particularly younger ones, finding their way in the world, learning and growing from their mistakes. I can only look forward to how Farris develops in later books.

Mythical and enchanting, The Last Man is a rare novel that proves impossible to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Tale
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 7, 2017
I was given a copy of The Last Man: An Enlightened Journey in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. I love reviewing books. I've discovered many fantastic books, and fantastic authors, this way. And, The Last Man is no exception.

The Last Man is the story of Farris, a 16 year old girl. Her brother Tom is 13. They have grown up listening to their grandmother's stories and songs. They think the stories are just that, stories. On Tom's 13th birthday their grandmother gives him a key. Farris is jealous. Not long after, the monsters from their grandmother's stories attack their village and carry off Tom. Farris determines to rescue her brother. Along the way she is joined by Sasha, a young man she has loved from afar, and Riften, one of the "monsters" who had stolen Tom. The three travel to an underground world and meet up with talking rocks and a tribe of people. Farris discovers who she is and what strengths she has.

The story seems to me to be a coming of age story, as Farris travels through the different worlds. It is well written, entertaining, and gripping. It's a book that is hard to put down once you start.

Review It's been a long time since I enjoyed a YA book as much as this one. The Last Man evokes a huge, layered world with simple language and complicated characters. Magic with consequences (sometimes too costly) is always a winner for me, and this story delivers.

We experience this world from Farris' POV. This is your standard coming-of-age story set in a lightly surreal universe that's very well established. There was one lampshade moment (near 4th wall, but not quite) when the fish is introduced, but otherwise the magics of the world are treated as the spectacular and dangerous things they are. The naming concept reminds me of Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind, but only in the sense that it's the single other book I've read with this magic construction.

Farris' voice is accurate for her age and very consistent. Her relationship with Sasha gets surprisingly complicated once the adventure starts, and I appreciate how frank the exposition is around it. Farris isn't going on an adventure with this tacked-on relationship to deal with, it's part of the story in critical ways and I hope to see that continue.

The relationship with her younger brother (the fulcrum of the plot) feels very real. I don't know if the author has a younger sibling (or is one) but I have a younger brother and the relationship depicted is a near-perfect representation of how we've interacted in the past.

Grab this book and expect to need the next one ASAP. It ends at a good point, but there's a lot of story left to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly well written adventure book
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 15, 2017
This series was designed to well written and so intelligent and eloquent it was almost beyond my grasp, and I am not an unintelligent person and I read avidly every night so that is a high compliment.
I thoroughly enjoyed the weaving twisting and turning plot its clear a huge amount of thought and planning has gone into the series. Unlike many self published novels I found zero spelling or grammatical mistakes which made me very happy.
There were deep philosophical riddles and questions posed and solved with extremely high level thought and it was utterly fascinating.
If I had to give any small criticism, which is hard because the books were amazing, it would be that I didn't like the main protagonist. This is strange for me as usual I identify with, like, am fascinated by the main protagonist but this time I really did not like her.
But amazing job extremely well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

I was asked to read this fantasy and have reviewed parts one and two on Goodreads...so this is an overview of the story as a whole.

It begins as more folklore and legend, where Farris is sceptical, although, her brother, Tom is determined to fulfill a prophecy.

Part two plunges into a wonderland of imagination when...hmm, I don't give spoilers.

Part three is filled with action, adventure and revelations.

This epic fantasy story is well-written and steeped in wisdom, philosophy and enlightenment, which prompt deep thinking and wonderment. Brilliant characters and a fabulous sense of place make this a compelling read.

Extremely well done and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this series!!!

Where to start?? I absolutely loved this series!!!
The world created by the author is like no other I have ever read. Dare i say a world with many layers, literally!!
The characters well honestly, I wanted to throat punch Farris a few times!! Damn she tried my patience, but I do have to admit that by the middle of the second book, we were pals.
If an adventure fantasy tale is what you are looking for, where nothing and no-one is as it seems then look no further!! This is a book you will enjoy reading again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Steeped in wisdom, philosophy and enlightenment.

Tobias Wade is an author of rare skill and imagination and the books that make up his ‘The First man’ series are among the best the genre has to offer. He writes beautifully and his characters are so real you can almost touch them. What makes his novels as addictive as candy is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way his characters are compromised and manipulated by internal politics. This epic fantasy story is well-written and steeped in wisdom, philosophy and enlightenment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too much too soon, but worth the slog
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 17, 2017
With strong mythical ties, the complexity of the world and characters will leave most young adult readers closing the book around chapter three. Adults will more likely trudge on and be rewarded with a fascinating tale with cliffhanger ending begging for book two as Farris and her companions find unexpected help and inner strength to continue on their quest to rescue Tom.
