How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsRead the book through a child's eyes and ears and it makes perfect sense
Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2020
I had to roll my eyes at some of the reviews and "messaging" that were written.
NO WHERE in the book does pout pout fish say "he's stupid"
He says "I am not smart", "I'll never get it", "I don't belong" "I should forget it"
Upon entering his first day of school, he gets lost and doesn't know where to go. Peering in shyly to other classrooms, he feel he doesn't belong because everyone is working on projects/activities that are way above his level.

His teacher finds him as he's about to give up. She corrects his negative thoughts/feelings and affirms he doesn't have to know what he hasn't learned yet.

As a mother to a four year old it's easy to see my son getting frustrated, wanting to give up. However, channeling the emotions, correction/ affirming is part of helping him realize, he can do hard things.

At the end of the story the entire class looks back fondly on the message of positive self talk and realizing they were able to accomplish what they put their mind to, once they learned it.

Maybe a little deep of a review for a children's book. However, I felt the need to steer the message of what I think the book was trying to convey. Humans get frustrated, turned around, lost. It opened up conversation of daily frustrations and working through road blocks my kid faces every day. Get the book. It's pout pout fish.

2.0 out of 5 starsNegative Message to Kids
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2018
I don't care for the message in this Pout Pout book. The fish says to himself several times that he "is stupid," "can't do it," and other negative self-talk. At the end of the book the teacher fish corrects this and says "you are smart," and "you can do it," but you have to get through the entire book to get to that point. I'm concerned that toddlers/young children won't internalize the ending as much as they do they negative self-messages throughout the majority of the book. In addition, placing the focus on whether one is "smart" enough in an academic setting is a poor way to represent school success to children. Kids don't need to hear that they are "smart" they need to hear that they are hard-workers, and that they tried hard and didn't give up despite challenges. These are the qualities that make a successful student, not "smarts," some undefinable quality that guarantees success to those who have it, and dooms those who don't (by the child's estimation or the parent/teacher's) to school failure.

1.0 out of 5 stars Teaches toddlers to say “I can’t”
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2021

This book taught my 3 year old to say “I can’t” when it comes to learning new things in school. For an older kid the message may resonate better, but then why is it a board book if not for toddlers? Do not recommend.

The book smells like something died wherever it was held. It has to be thrown out, the smell is so strong just turning the pages you smell dead animal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Negative Message.

I liked the Pout Pout Fish and the Big Dark, but I did not like this book at all. First, I think that this book repeatedly reinforces a negative message. I think that three year old children are too young to see the "moral" at the end. I think the book does more damage introducing negative outlooks than good. The meter is not as good as the other two books either. I do not recommend this book. I threw mine out.

The book we got was a second, with several pages put in upside down. Not sure what to do about that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excessive negativity, too much 'pout'
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2016

The repeated negativity in this book is a major disappointment. By the end of this very long downer the child barely notices the positive lesson at the end, and instead is bummed out by the excessive amount of 'pout'. Cannot believe this actually made it to print, but we returned it right away, while shrugging off the storyline with an awkward explanation to our children.

This fish is so depressing and down on himself. I would put him into therapy immediately. I'm happy I only bought one of this series. No thank you Pout Pout fish.

Not even close to the original pout pout fish. There are many ways this book could have been executed better. I would not recommend it.

LEBaker
1.0 out of 5 stars Repetition of Negative Ideas About Self Worth and Ability Not Good for Impressionable Children's Confidence/Self-Image
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2016
I second all the reviewers noting the negative repetition in this book. When I started to read aloud the page that says "I'm not smart," and "I'll never get it," I had to quickly change the words for my two year old who I don't want internalizing those ideas. Those aren't things we say around our kid - he's like a sponge and I would never want to introduce concepts or even just words diminishing his confidence. While the author predictably turns it around when the pout pout fish inevitable finds that he CAN do things, it's kind of a little too late after all the negative repetition. I definitely don't recommend this book. I just put it in the donation box, but I'm tempted to throw it out. I don't think it's good for any child to be reading "I'm not smart."
