First, this has to be one of the best written and most satisfying Christian books I've ever read! I love marriages of convenience stories. But all too often, we have to wait for the last few pages to see the marriage completed. There is nothing wrong with tasteful story lines of a marriage that has been consummated. Too often in Christian romances, it's taboo. It's so satisfying to see emotions and feelings that are what the majority of us have felt, portrayed. I also appreciated the fact that I could see a marriage not only fulfilled, but I got to read about the relationship growing and deepening.
Secondly, I am so appreciative of how the post Civil War in the South is portrayed, Again, Christian authors tend to write how they wish things had transpired over 100 years ago, instead of portraying the past in a compassionate, yet realistic way. History is history. I do not believe that all Southerners agreed with slavery, and I'm sure many had compassion on the plight of Blacks after they were freed. Many did not, and we are witnesses to the horrific acts that some committed. It is behavior that to most us now, seems incomprehensible. But these acts did happen, and because of what was acceptable during that time, the complications of how to handle the post war South, wasn't so easily determined. Yet, we are given a story of compassion mixed with reality. I, for one, am so thankful for that balance.
As I stated in my subject line, I started this book on a Sunday afternoon and couldn't put it down! I read well past my bedtime, despite having a very early morning. It is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is the most satisfying books I've read in a long time. She is truly a gifted author!

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of love despite hardships

This is the second of Tamara Alexander’s Belle Meade Plantation novels. Once again, an excellent book, with engaging, believable characters, and a plot that is thoroughly in keeping with the historical period in which it is set. Several of the characters in the book are based on real people (or real horses) who lived at the time.

Maggie Linden lives at Linden Downs, one of the neighboring plantations to Belle Meade. (I don’t know if Linden Downs was a real plantation or not.) Between taxes, vandalism, the loss of her four brothers in the war, and her father’s failing health, the fortunes of Linden Downs have taken a serious downturn since the war.
Besides her own beauty, Maggie has only one seriously valuable asset left – her prized thoroughbred Bourbon Belle. She has trained this horse herself in the hopes of seeing her race in the inaugural Peyton Stakes to be held that fall. The purse from that race would be enough to pay the back taxes on the plantation and pay for some needed improvements.

Belle could easily win the race. But of course, nothing is ever really that easy. The jockeys for the races at the local track are all young black boys, and Willie, the boy Maggie has been using for her jockey, is scared into leaving town with his family when one of their neighbors is hanged by a group that acts like the KKK.

Cullen McGrath has newly arrived in Nashville from Ireland (via London). He is looking to buy a quiet farm on the outskirts of town to rebuild his shattered life. He has had bad experience with horse racing and wants nothing to do with the town’s thoroughbreds. In town less than two days, he has already encountered a prejudice against the Irish among the locals. (Sheesh – was there anybody we did like back then?) Cullen figures his best chance to find a place is to look for farms about to be sold at auction and try to see if he can get someone to sell to him for cash before they have to resort to the auction. This is how he meets Gilbert Linden, Maggie’s father. Before they can discuss the problem, they are interrupted by the spectacle of a man beating a horse, and Cullen rides to the horse’s rescue. After seeing him handle the horse, Gilbert Linden changes his mind about selling the farm and offers it to Cullen for the price of the back taxes – with the provision that Cullen will marry Maggie into the bargain.

Maggie is shocked, protests the idea of marrying an Irishman, and all that, but goes through with the marriage for her father’s sake. Slowly they begin to make accommodations for each other, but the people who don’t want to see an Irishman succeed and don’t want to see Maggie race Bourbon Belle and don’t want to see anybody hiring free Negroes don’t make life easy for them or for the people Cullen hires to work the farm.

This book is the second one in the Belle Meade Plantation series. The first book, To Whisper Her Name, came out in 2012.

Maggie dreams of seeing her racehorse, Bourbon Belle, run in an upcoming race. Her family’s home is on the verge of being auctioned off, and if they don’t come up with an answer soon, they’re going to lose it all. Her jockey is moving away and it seems like all hope is lost.

Cullen has come to America to escape being imprisoned for something he didn’t do, but ends up with a broken heart. Now, he’s come to Nashville to try and buy some land and honor his wife’s wishes. The problem is, there’s so much prejudice that he people won’t give him any credit or let him participate in any auctions. Cullen meets Maggie’s father one day. Her father is a sick man and wants to do what he can to secure a stable future for her.

Maggie’s father offers to let Cullen buy the plantation for less money, but he has to marry his daughter and promise to take care of her. Cullen isn’t fond of the idea at first, but after some thought, agrees. Maggie knows that her father is ill, so she ends up agreeing to the marriage as well. She’d thought he was handsome until he opened his mouth. The Irish brogue puts her off, because she’s been taught that the Irish are not to be trusted and are fond of fighting and drinking.

As these two come to know each other better, Maggie is challenged about the way she views Cullen and also the former slaves that he’s now employing. At first, she’s embarrassed by the thought she has to claim this Irishman as her husband, but her views slowly change until she questions everything she’s known her entire life. It makes it easier when Cullen has the patience of a saint!

I liked this book a lot. Normally, anything to do with horses appeals to me anyway, but this story was great. The way the author dealt with the topic of prejudice was eye-opening. There are scenes of violence and lynching in there, but I think it was handled in a good way. There’s also a few moments of marital bliss, but it was tame enough that it didn’t make this prude blush.

You can read this book alone. I didn’t see any mentions of the main characters from the first book in there. I came to sympathize a great deal with one of the minor characters, Savannah, and was glad to read there would be a novella about her coming out in July 2015. To Mend a Dream will tell her story and I look forward to it. Recommended.

*I received a copy of this book from Zondervan through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The second book in Alexander's Belle Meade series, To Win Her Favour, focuses on three parallel struggles. The freed slaves, fighting to actually be free. The Irish, finding disappointment in paradise. And a woman struggling to prove herself capable of more than dreams.

Lest this sound like depressing fare, dear reader, have no fear. I had heard that To Win Her Favour had an epic love story, and they weren’t lying. This book sizzles! There were a few moments between Cullen and Maggie when I thought my Kindle was going to short out. ;) Not that she ever goes beyond the line in the sand that is Christian Fiction. I read a few reviews where readers were shocked at the detail. I was a little surprised that they were surprised. Alexander might have gone a little further than she normally does, but that is still isn’t as far as say… Julie Lessman or Tamara Leigh sometimes go.

Also, the little horse crazy girl in me has to mention the horses. Some might find that particular sub-plot a little sappy, but I loved every single moment of it. I also appreciated that Bucket was sort of an anti-Lassie. Loved him. He brought to mind a dog I used to own.

Therefore, to sum up; I loved it. I need to stop buying books on my Kindle just before I go to bed. Yes, I stayed up until 3 in the morning finishing it. I live a wild and crazy life my friends.

Tamera Alexander is one of my favorite author’s. She writes books that always capture my attention and leave me seeking more of her books. To Win her Favor was an excellent read with a good balance of historical fiction and romance. I fell in love with the characters and my only disappointment was when To Win her Favor finished.

There were some scenes of the couple making love which were a little steamer than I prefer. I choose to skim past those. I can see that these could be offensive to some readers. But these make up only a few pages and the rest of the book is well worth reading past those scenes.

To Win Her Favor was written post civil war era and presented a wonderful perspective of the reconstruction period in the south. Tamera Alexander shares the racism that existed back then regarding not only the blacks but also the Irish. Her characters were very believable as they were portrayed as flawed humans with a sin nature.

I read To Win her Favor because I had received a copy of “To Wager Her Heart” and I wanted to make sure I read the series in order. I first read To Whisper Her Name was equally fantastic. It would be very easy to read these books out of order and still enjoy every single page. But wow- I suggest reading the entire series starting with To Whisper her Name. The first book introduces the reader to several of the characters. I can’t wait to read the final in the series “To Wager Her Heart” and then “To Mend a Dream” which continues telling the story of one of the characters.

I'm so sad to see this book getting negative reviews and comments from people who can't handle seeing a healthy marriage relationship in the correct context. The horror!! But before we get to that let me say that this is a 353 page Christian book with discussion questions and a cookie recipe in the back. It is by no means a bode ripper or anything close. If you read the author's note, it's clear that this Civil War era novel was actually set out to realistically explore the topic of prejudice which of course was at a fever pitch during that time in the US, but still persists, obviously and subtly today.

I think this book did an excellent job of shining a light on that topic, both in regard to slaves and former slaves and in regard to 'foreigners' of any kind. It was not a bright time in American history, and it's important to learn from where we came from.

This book was a poignant journey for all of our characters, but I think most especially for Maggie. I loved seeing her adjust to not only the changing culture around her, but the drastic changes within her own personal life. It was beautiful to watch her and Cullen grow closer together, learn from each other, and ultimately learn to trust and rely on God as they worked together. Every character in this story was vivid and authentic, and I feel like I'm doing an injustice to the depth and of the novel by not mentioning all of them and their parts. But this is an intricately woven tale, where every life touches and intertwines with others to make a beautiful satisfying story of healing, redemption, love, and faith. Honestly, I put off starting this one, because I wasn't sure that the whole horse/racing aspect would be something I would care about. By the end I was crying over a horse race. This book does everything well.

Now to address the "sexual content" that many people seem to be so upset about. Honestly, I think it was handled exceedingly well, and that it added the perfect depth and feeling to the story. Without it, this book and Cullen and Maggie's relationship would not have been so authentic, complex, and moving. That being said, it was by no means graphic in my opinion. I see many reviews warning teenagers away. Okay 1) No one said this was a teen book. But 2) I probably would/will let my kids read this when they're teens if they want to. Sex exists. Not talking about it and denying knowledge of it doesn't make it go away, and it doesn't make you a better Christian. And, *gasp* teens know about it too. Shocking, I know. This is by no means a lascivious, 50 Shades of Grey experience. This is a slightly descriptive, fade to black example of a couple learning what it means to love God and each other and become one flesh. I would rather my children, or anyone, see a HEALTHY, consensual, loving expression than what we're all bombarded with through real life and the media daily. That being said, again, the "sexual content" is a tiny part of the book and really not worth this much mention. I wouldn't have mentioned it at all had I not seen several horrified, pearl clutching reviews. (And of course, everyone has the right to their own opinion and to decide what they want to read about.)

I have to say that I'm thrilled that more Christian authors (and in my 15+ years of reading Christian fiction, I can say it's the more experienced and talented authors who've been around for years) are being allowed to write more realistically. I don't read Christian books to find a squeaky clean world where everyone is saved and does the right thing 24/7 and their biggest issue is a hangnail. I'm not interested in Ned Flanders type caricatures. Those stories are BORING. The ones that resonate, the important ones that make me feel like I've learned something and maybe grown in my own understanding, are the ones that tackle REAL life, the ugly parts and all, in a Biblical fashion. Tamera Alexander does that here and in many of her other books. It makes me laugh to see people outraged over this, saying they've liked her other stuff but this has turned them off because "she's changed." I actually haven't loved her latest few novels, although I do like her writing style. This book, however, reminds me of the first books I read by her, The Fountain Creek Chronicles, way back in 2006. If you liked this one, I highly recommend those. They brought me to to happy tears and cemented Tamera's spot on my auto-buy author's list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story!!! ❤❤❤

To Win Her Favor(2015) by Tamera Alexander is the second novel in the Belle Meade Plantation series. This novel comes in all forms including eBook, and is 352 pages in length. With a full-time job and a fantastic five-year old at home, this novel took me three days to read. I give this novel 5 STARS. This story is a Christian Historical Romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! As is the case with all Alexander novels, the writing is superb and the historical details are well researched. This story is a fast-paced, action-filled page turner. And, the characters are so well-crafted. This novel also includes character cameos from the Belmont Mansionseries, which I thought was really cool.

Maggie’s father, Gilbert Linden, owns Linden Downs, but only until it is sold at auction. With the Civil War having taken its toll on the South, and carpetbaggers sweeping in from the North taking advantage of the misfortunes of others, Linden Downs is among the many homes, plantations, and farms financially suffering. Maggie owns Bourbon Belle, a gorgeous thoroughbred. She is convinced that if she enters Belle in the upcoming race she will win the purse and Linden Downs will be saved. Things do not go according to Maggie’s plans, and Linden Downs is still set to be auctioned off. Enter Cullen McGrath. Cullen is an Irishman determined to purchase land and farm for the rest of his life. He especially hopes he never has to partake in anything having to deal with thoroughbreds ever again. He goes to Gilbert Linden to see if a sale can be made prior to Linden Downs going to auction. They strike a deal, and Cullen is now not only the owner of Linden Downs, but he finds himself married to Maggie. Not exactly what he had planned, but Cullen is determined to make Linden Downs great again and be a good husband to Maggie.

God has thoroughly blessed me. I married my husband after a two-year courtship. He asked me to marry him and I said, “Yes!” It was my choice. I didn’t have to marry for financial reasons or out of necessity. I got to marry because I fell in love. I can’t even imagine marrying a man out of necessity. But, as Ms. Alexander explains in her “A Note from the Author” chapter, marriages of convenience were regular occurrences in the 1800s especially after the Civil War. I immediately felt for Maggie and Cullen. Neither one of them necessarily wanted to marry the other, but necessity drew them together. And, the relationship progresses so realistically. As a married woman, there are days where I feel my husband and I are two steps forward, and then I turn around and we are four steps back. This is how it goes when humans are in a committed relationship. Maggie is at first distrustful of Cullen, and Cullen is at first super cautious with his new bride. Over the course of the story, they seem to make small strides to making their marriage real, but then setbacks occur and they are right back to square one. The passion, respect, and love that does grow between the couple is so realistic, and I truly appreciate that about this novel. Never at any point in their story does the relationship between Maggie and Cullen feel fake or saccharine.

One aspect that I truly appreciated in this novel is the attention to the social issues of the late 1800s in the American South. I’ve taken many history classes in my lifetime, so I know that time period was exceptionally rough for African Americans, foreigners, people from the North, women, etc. But reading about this time from a boring textbook never quite allowed me to understand the emotional, physical, and mental upheaval of the time. Ms. Alexander does an amazing job in this novel of making the reader feel what it would feel like to be hated simply because of the color or your skin, your accent, or your geographical birth place. The hate that pours off of the villain and some of the townsfolk is truly astounding. There are moments in this novel that made me angry. How anyone can claim to love Jesus and sit in church on Sunday, yet be perfectly willing and able to string a man up in a tree and watch him hang to death is flabbergasting to me. I appreciate that Ms. Alexander refused to sugarcoat history in her book. Yes, it adds to the tension of the plot, but it also allows me to reevaluate myself. It’s very easy for me to get angry at people from the past, but am I being self-righteous? Am I loving people no matter what…even that guy who cut me off on the freeway? Am I being like Jesus, or like the villain from this novel? Am I claiming to love, but actually hating? I absolutely LOVE when a novel gets me reevaluating my walk with Christ. This novel did this for me in spades!

This story is fantastic. I was definitely sad to reach the last page. BUT, book three in the series is due out soon: August 8th!!! I have the great fortune of being part of Ms. Alexander’s book launch team for To Wager Her Heart, so as soon as I get my copy of the book I will devour it and post my thoughts. If you have not yet read To Win Her Favor, I highly recommend that you do. You will not regret the decision to read this book!

This is perhaps one of my favorite "marriage of convenience" stories. Cullen very quickly became a favorite hero as he fights against the odds and prevalent prejudices to prove himself worthy of Maggie's father's approval and Maggie's love. Once Maggie overcomes both her own prejudices and her doubts about Cullen love is allowed to finally spark between them- and oh how the sparks fly! The passion these two share makes the pages smoke (although it is clean). However, tensions rise as both have secrets and hidden agendas that cause hurt and mistrust between them. As they learn to fully open their hearts and wounds begin to heal, their commitment to each other deepens and both see their ultimate dreams fulfilled. As always, I also thoroughly enjoyed how Alexander truthfully portrayed both the beauty and struggles of living in the deep South during a very tumultuous time in history.

This review contains my own thoughts and opinions regarding this literary work. I have not been compensated in any way by the author or publisher.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story and Beautifully Written
Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2015

When the aging Gilbert Linden offers the young Irishman Cullen McGrath the offer of a lifetime, a chance to purchase his property, it includes something, or rather someone quite astonishing; his daughter, Maggie. How can Cullen possibly accept the hand of a beautiful young woman in matrimony, with whom he is not acquainted, and whom he suspects would never willingly agree to this manner of proposal? Is the lush Linden Downs estate worth this kind of risk?

Maggie Linden is incensed that her father would ask her to marry man whom she does not know, even if it is primarily a business arrangement. Her beloved Linden Downs would escape auction and Maggie would have the security and protection of a husband when her father joins her mother and four brothers in the Linden family cemetery. Granted, her father has always been an excellent judge of character, but the handsome Cullen McGrath has seemingly managed to win her father's favor overnight. Deep down, Maggie also fears that her new husband might not allow her to accomplish her lifelong dream; racing her beautiful thoroughbred, Bourbon Belle in the upcoming Peyton Stakes.

It seems that a hasty marriage is not the only force threatening to rob Cullen and Maggie of true happiness; there are those in post-civil war Nashville who do not take kindly to an Irishman treating freedmen and their families with kindness; when Cullen brings entire working families to live in snug cabins on his property, vicious retaliation ensues. Added to the fact, Cullen's history with racetrack treachery has put him at odds with his wife's desire to race a prized horse. Will the putrid stench of racial hatred and one woman's determination to challenge her husband's decision serve to destroy all the Cullen and Maggie hold dear?

"To Win Her Favor" is an amazing story, beautifully written, with lively dialogue between two "business partners" that quickly ascends to treasured conversations shared among two joined together as one. It took great faith and a lot of courage for Maggie and Cullen to look upon those around them without judgement according to skin color or intonation of speech; a legacy that I believe the author bequeaths to those who read this engaging addition to her Belle Meade Plantation series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again from Tamera Alexander, another terrific read!
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2015

Tamera Alexander is a master author and To Win Her Favor is no exception. This second book in the Belle Meade Plantation series was every bit as good as the first. While book two was a bit more serious of a read (lacking the humor of the first), it delved deeper into the relationships between the Americans and the immigrants, as well as the way former slaves were treated in the aftermath of the Civil War. In all honesty, I felt that the author skillfully added enough of the adversities to give the reader a bit of a taste of what happened in that time, but certainly not the fuller, much deeper horror that it truly encompassed. To do so would have given far more depth to this book, but also would have drawn the focus away from the main story. The treatment of one man to another (as well as to women and children), is - or most likely is - well known in history. Therefore, Tamera Alexander weaved just enough of the adversity into her story to make this book both historically realistic as well as uncomfortable to those who dislike these certain parts of our American history, such as I. What I truly enjoyed about this book was, of course, the horses. Blood horses. Having been raised with them and trained them myself, I appreciate the knowledge of the author, which, I suspect, is far greater than her words reveal in this book. Also, I held a deep respect for the relationship between the father and son-in-law. That the proud Irishman lent himself fully to the wisdom of the older man spoke volumes of his character that mere words could not have capture so fully. I also appreciated the thoughtfulness the author put into the feelings Maggie felt - jealousy mainly - in watching the close relationship her father had with her husband. I did wish the author had gone into a bit more detail about the training and advise Maggie and Uncle Bob had given to Kizzy (pardon my spelling if it in incorrect; I listened to the audio version) in regards to the race itself. The was no mention of what Kizzy might face on the track itself with other horses and riders - a sport dangerous enough without the mean little tricks which happen during the race. Riders are ruthless on the track, boxing others in, using their whips on other horses, crowding horses on the rail, and so forth. I felt that some mention of the things should have been made to Kizzy in preparing her for the race. There are so many facets to this book, I simply can't cover them all in a review, and to do so would be unfair in any case, in my my opinion. I simply say, you must read this book for yourself! It is worth every minute! I give a special thank you to Tamera Alexander for allowing me the privilege and delight of burying myself once more into her imagination within the pages of To Win Her Favor.
