Wonderful Book! Coach Wooden was a mane of integrity. I first learned about this book when my daughter came home from school talking about friendship. I asked her where did she hear such a wonderful explantation about what a friend is and how to be a friend, she said her coach in athletics had this book and every Friday they have a character building lesson from it. That's all it took for me to reach out to my kids coach and ask for the title. I use this book in my class to teach character building lessons and I use it at church in our youth group.

This is NOT a typical John Wooden book. It's a really a daily devotional. It's a Jay Carty book with a little John Wooden. DO NOT buy this book if you are not expecting to read it as a devotional with scriptures, bible verses, homework assignments, etc. I was disappointed in the book. Waste of my money.

How come more people aren’t mentioning how Christianity-heavy this book is? I’m sorry but this is more about connecting stories from the Bible to concepts related to coaching than it is to the actual pyramid of success concepts or basketball coaching. I bought it for my bf who is a youth basketball coach and trainer to reaffirm and inspire his coaching skills but I’m not even going to give this to him out of fear he will think I’m trying to convert him LOL. That’s disappointing because he told me about coach wooden and I really wanted to gift him this but it’s really overkill with the Christian-centric perspective. These principles could’ve been apparoached in a more inclusive way in my opinion. Oh well..

It would be easy to say this book is where sports analogies meets scriptural verse but it's not. As Wooden consistently stresses, the pursuit of results in any sport, game or the game of life for that matter is not defined by the score, winning or other such measures. It's about the achievement of your best self, in every endeavour, from that success is assured. A simple read that makes the point beautifully. Wooden like his decades long marriage & even longer life was simply focused on the dedication to being his best, "and let the results take care of themselves."

This is an EXCELLENT guide for wanna-be coaches, along with Mike Matheny's The Matheny Manifesto. It's full of simple insights into a coach's/and good person's thought process. Each chapter outlines a building block in Wooden's Pyramid of Success then this Jay Carty guy supports the Coach's thoughts with complimentary bible verse. It works out okay. UNTIL... you get to the "Intentness" chapter which compares staying focused on a goal to the woman in the Bible who had her period for 12 years. It was then that I began to question everyone's judgement. Leading up to that, some of the Bible chapter/verse selected were pretty random or repetitive. I'm not sure this book had an editor.

Coach Wooden is the ultimate principle architect. His blueprint for life was developed and refined over a life time. He laid a solid foundation of principles that will support all the other principles. The foundation principles are values that if implemented will set the example and attract others to follow your leadership. The second level are principles of self discipline that when demonstrated consistently show others you are a person who is in control of theirself. The third level are principles of both ability and camaraderie that draw individuals into a close knit team. The fourth level are the keys to the cap stone of competitive greatness. These two building blocks are crucial to individual success and when cultivated are displayed outwardly as sure sign of success. Like any great architect Coach included the mortar that is a necessity to hold the principles together. These mortar principles hold the block principles together because they incorporate deep inner seated values that intertwine and cause the block principles to withstand the test of time.

Wonderful Advice, but not as Visionary or Devotional as I Hoped it Would Be

Coach John Wooden was legendary for his success in coaching UCLA basketball teams which won 7 consecutive NCAA titles and a total of 10, as well as winning 88 straight games. But people off the court have also recognized him as a great teacher.

His "Pyramid for Success" is a widely used motivational, self-help method/book, and it is filled with useful life information. His definition of success, for example, is very useful for those distracted by more worldly and more selfish measures of success. For Wooden, success is "a peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." Anyone who reads this book will not fail to come away with some important lessons in life.

I also like the way that Jay Carty has taken Wooden's principles and then applied them to the life of Christians from the Bible: what a wonderful enhancement to Wooden's work!

I do, however, have 2 criticisms of the book. First, I'm not convinced that all of the 15 "building blocks" and 10 "mortar qualities" necessarily build on each other the way the book implies. They seem more like disjointed points which, though excellent, don't add up to a coherent vision to understand and live life. My second criticism is that by building a devotional book on top of Wooden's pyramid, one comes away sometimes with the idea that one is building up oneself in terms of faith or salvation. Wooden's advice is based on human experience and endeavor and doesn't begin with the gospel of grace. For this reason, the devotional part of the book, while very useful in some ways, is insufficient and even misleading.
