How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsSandford has ruined me!

Sandford's books, which are 5 or 4++ stars. Have almost ruined me from reading other authors. I keep trying others but would always prefer to re-reread another Sandford/Camp. One positive thing about me getting old, is that I am forgetful enough to forget enough details to make reading one interesting. His irreverence and humor are right up my alley

3.0 out of 5 starsLots of run on

I read this years ago and reading through it again I realized I didnโ€™t like it that much. This book had a lot of repetitive parts to it. As far as Lucas, he likes to say that he just loves women when really he just canโ€™t keep it in his pants. I had forgotten that. At one point he says he hasnโ€™t cheated on Jennifer since she got pregnant but that wasnโ€™t true. He had a thing going with the witness that escaped the bad guy in the first book. Not his fault that Jennifer got pregnant wo telling him she was trying and she just sort of sprung it on him in the first book. Now in this one she all hurt that he has an affair. Letโ€™s face it, Jennifer has some problems with her own moral values (or lack thereof). I also realized that I like the Davenport books that have Virgil in them but I am determined to go through my list and re-read this series. Sometimes you get so far that you forget how they got there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, I guess.

As of this writing, this is only the second John Sanford novel I've read. I previously read the first book in this series, Rules of Prey. Rule of Prey was a lot better. I wouldn't say I loved that book either, but it worked pretty well for what it was. Shadow Prey suffers a bit for having a less compelling criminal scheme at the center of it and, I felt, less threatening villains. Maybe this is just me, but I thought it was pretty easy to see where this story was going most of the time and was occassionally boring. It was never that far ahead of me. I may give this series another try some time, but not anytime soon because the thriller market is pretty crowded so if I want something in that space I can do better than this. I give it three stars because it was a competently told story but far from you-can't-put-it-down material.

Not a bad book but not great. The plot was sort of flat and the story dragged a bit. I've read better.

Good read, not my favorite story but looking forward as always to the next in the series. Dont care for all the violence and knowing every thing that the crazy murderer is thinking or doing. Nor do I care for all the horrible language page after page, but John Sandfords writing is excellent and so is his layering of the plot and the depth of the characters. Ugliness is real in the world today, but so is the strength, courage, and drive to do what needs to be done, and it is depicted here with awesome scenes and the good guys go and get the bad ones. THAT I can read about all day long, and John S provides it

3.0 out of 5 stars While the story is fast paced and much of the book is a terrific ride and page turner

I am a huge fan of John Sandford and the Prey series in particular. I read them as I came across them, but then decided to go back and read the series from the beginning. The earlier books are not nearly as well developed regarding characters as the later books. While the story is fast paced and much of the book is a terrific ride and page turner, the scenes that primarily deal with character relationships are two dimensional and cliche. John Sandford clearly did much with Lucas Davenport, and he has developed into an interesting and compelling figure, but that is in later books. This is a book for fans, and maybe those, like me, who are interested in the back stories and earlier development of some of the central figures. Not his best, but worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars John Sandford is Better Than This

Don't judge John Sandford's Lucas Davenport novels on this book. I read a few Davenport novels and, because they are entertaining and the protagonist is from the Twin Cities of Minnesota, decided to begin at the beginning and read the whole series. This, Sandford's sophomore Lucas Davenport story, is not as good as the first. I read the introduction, so I understood the reason the Prey's were acting as they were, but there was no more reference to it in the main novel. The rest of the novel was a little disjointed, as well. Also, being a native Minnesotan, I know that the geographic locations mentioned are in the plains states, but not necessarily in Minnesota. Also, the Dakota, or Sioux, people described in the novel are from those plains states, not from the northern Minnesota area where I was raised. I was never aware of the Sioux until I lived in South Dakota one summer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 of Prey Series

A group of Indians decide to punish some bureaucrats who made their life miserable and who prey on Indian women/girls. The story starts off with a rape of a drunk Indian girl, and then you jump forward in time to follow Indian vigilantes. I would say this is not my favorite book of the series, but it is because the good guys/bad guys start getting too confused. This series is about serial killers and I would say (from book 3) Sandford sees his character Lucas Davenport as a type of serial killer, himself. He is a bit of a loose cannon, a born womanizer, but a clever cop who will find the killer in the end and probably shoot him personally. I went through this series years ago, and am circling back and rereading them again. Sandford is just that good.

Interesting in Parts. Both at Thrilling as 1 but still quick.

Interesting characters and plot lines with the Indians. Thought it was clunky at times.
