5.0 out of 5 starsJust buy all three and save yourself the time scrambling between books...
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2017
For the past few years, I have been pining for a series that would come close to captivating me as much as my favorite series of all had previously done... Harry Potter. No, I would never compare between the two, I simply correlate the depth to which both series had such a dramatic effect on me and the extent to which I fully dove into each book.

People... I'm a mom, I have a life, and NO time to read. I read this series in under 5 days.

I honestly thought, just from reading reviews and plot lines that this was just another supernatural series, destined to not live up to it's great predecessors of supernatural series greatness. I even waited to read this after I bought it. I was SO wrong with my initial thinking.
I fell into this series.. into the words. The characters. The plot. Everything about this book had me so enveloped into the story and world. I just completed the third book, and I am re-reading this first one again because I do not want to escape the magic of the world Sarah J. Maas has thrown me head-first into. I could not stop reading until I finished the last book and I still beg for more, as any good series would leave you wanting.

Read this book if you... Want to find yourself 6 hours later, finished with a book and buying the second one immediately following finishing the first; need a good romance novel; want to lose yourself in an amazing series; love books that leave you weak in the knees, crying uncontrollably, breathless, or so excited you're hurling your fist in the air without realizing (yes, my husband was REALLY confused)..; enjoyed Harry Potter, or Twilight, or Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, Hunger Games, The Alchemist, The Magicians, The Goldfinch... or etc.etc.etc... ; want to read something that you will remember forever.... THIS is the book, and series, you should read.

2.0 out of 5 starsACOTAR is nothing more than erotica
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2018
So here I sit, having gone through the OMG ACOTAR SERIES IS AMAZING phase, and out the other end, I can sit back and think "What the actual hell?"

I'm a HUGE Maas fan, so when I found out she was writing another series, I had to have it. For the first time in a long time, my library actually got the book within a month of its release, so I checked out ACOTAR and read it in a single day. I loved it.

Books two came out, and while I was super disappointed in the pointless sex thrown in every so often and whole chapters dedicated to this nonsense, I continued reading because the story was compelling enough. And then ACOWAR emerged, and everything changed.

This was a series I read numerous times before ACOWAR came out, and I saw things that genuinely bothered me, but I ignored them (I don't even know why) until I just couldn't stand it anymore.

ACOTAR is nothing more than erotica. I feel like the series as a whole started out with plans of being some sort of "story" porn that has a kick-ass plot with "hot" scenes thrown in for whatever reason, and then it got to ACOWAR and decided it wanted to be The Bachelor or a soap opera instead.

The relationship between Tamlin and Feyre GREATLY disturbs me. She's taking care of her family and he swoops in after she accidentally kills a fae (who was disguised as a wolf int he woods where hunters hunt...) and takes her away, claiming she's going to be in trouble and damned and blah blah. No, she's pampered and given servants and pretty clothes and good food. Tamlin dresses her up like a doll and makes snide remarks when she falls short of his goals (fae goals, mind you).

Feyre is a HUMAN. Tamlin is fae. He acts like her humanity is a curse or something to hold against her, and he constantly makes remarks about how she's too fragile, too uneducated, too plain, etc. Instead of "fixing" these issues, Tamlin does nothing other than tell her what to do and not do.

He sexually assaults her after Calanmai, and in the book Feyre shows how much she does not want his advances, and he shoves her against the wall and BITES her, then tells her not to ever go against him again. How is this OK? If my husband ever did this to me, I'd kick him in the crotch and leave. This is not OK. This is not a relationship. This is abuse, which is why it disgusts me that people go on and on about Tamlin.

The fact that Feyre and Tamlin have sex at a later time after he did this makes it worse. why, Feyre, are you going to throw yourself at a man who A) Doesn't care about you based off his degrading comments and B) threatens you. Not only that, he basically blames her for a near-rape experience when he literally did nothing to look out for her and/or stop the guys who were going to attack her?

That being said, I have a lot of issues with Feyre. She gets off too easy on everything, and it's like her brain is only wired to care if the dude is hot. You take care of your family, but then you walk into Tamlin's embrace after the things he has said and done. I understand she has been abused by this, but at the same time, she could have said no. Death is a lot better than basically being a sex slave or punching bag to an immortal person determined to imprison you until you die.

She's never punished for killing a fae. Lucien and Tamlin tell her about magical creatures that could give her what she wants, and the next day she walks out and finds them...the elusive creatures...that are hard for fae to find?

Lucien is about the only well developed character, and he's too sexualized sometimes for me to take me seriously. If you keep pointing out the abs, tanned skin, or whatever on the dude, you're turning them into a slab of meat. All of the males, and truthfully the females as well, in ACOTAR are "perfect" in the idea of what today's society thinks is beauty, sexy, and amazing at everything. This is sexist on every account. Your characters become nothing more than fantasies--which is why I say this is nothing more than porn/erotica.

Sure, you can get some great messages out of this series, but is it worth all of the dung in the way? Specifically with the later books, there's too much sex at some points for it to even be OK. Please, go try to have sex that many times or for days on end and tell me how that is. if you can do that, I'm sorry, but you're either a whore or you're just kinda crazy, because that's too much.

Why I ever read this book and like it, I truthfully don't know, but I'm done with this series. I'm done with this fandom, and I'm fed up with seeing people "swoon" or make comments or even draw/like at that nude art about LITERARY CHARACTERS. Guys, seriously? This is not a book for young girls, but when I went to the first (and last) Maas event, most of the audience there were between the ages of 14-20 (predominately 15-17 years of age) and SCREAMED when Maas was mentioning SEX SCENES. I'm not going to continue to support a series that is encouraging young teens and young women to have unrealistic ideas of men as well as sexual fantasies, especially the married women who I've seen act this same way. if I were your husband, I wouldn't be able to deal with that. I wouldn't want those books in my house.

About the only good thing I have to say for ACOTAR was that there actually was a plot in this book, and it was good, if insanely slow to get rolling, and the amount of sex was fairly minimal.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT A YA BOOK!

Review found at www.awesomebooknut.com

This is not YA…is it? It can’t be…. really? I think it has got to go under the NA (New Adult-ranges from ages 19+ or “college age”) category now. Because I would NOT let a younger teenager read this.

Because WHOA….

Okay I bought this because it’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, I mean who wouldn’t! Sarah J. Maas is an EXCELLENT writer. And the retelling was amazing. I will honestly say I thought it resembled Juliet Marillier’s version of Beauty and the Beast, at certain parts but IT’S NOT.

Feyre fights for the survival of her family; after being left destitute due to her father’s bad business dealings and debts-Feyre hunts for food and sells what she can for whatever else they need to survive. The dynamics of the family was great and goes along with the oldest stories I’ve read of Beauty and the Beast. Feyre made a promise to her dying mother to take care of the family, which has kept Feyre going all these years. She is a surviver, she taught her self how to shoot, how to skin hides, and she does this solely for the purpose of her promise to her dying mother.

When Feyre kills a wolf, a HUGE beast/wolf/bear/creature comes for retribution for that kill. Feyre agrees to go with this creature and live in the dreaded faerie lands with no chance of every going home and seeing her family again.

I enjoyed the faerie aspect of this story as I feel it stays true to the original idea that faeries aren’t to be trusted. I loved every aspect of the faerie world and all that came with it.

I enjoyed the mystery behind what’s killing or taking over the faerie world and the concept behind and involving the faerie world and how it affects the human world. It was amazing and extremely well written.

The romance was awesome in the aspect of a GOOD MAN! I am tired of seeing these girls fall for the “bad guys” and somehow “change” these guys. It’s unrealistic but you can have a brooding character who underneath is gentle, good, and kind and I loved that about Tamlin.

I loved Tamlin’s character for all the reasons written above. Plus the fact that he was willing to do whatever it takes for the good of his estate and the people on there. He was good man. I liked him.

Overall the story was phenomenal and amazing. However the reason why I could not recommend this to younger audiences is the fact that there is a graphic sex scene. Now, it does NOT go on for pages on end or chapters but it’s graphic enough that I would not recommend this to younger audiences. I am disappointed that if this book is considered YA that it would be so graphic.

Sexual Content: heavy (as mentioned above)
Violence: heavy
Language: mild
Drugs/Alcohol: mild/moderate (faerie parties and drinking)

*for those sensitive to that kind of content I would recommend you “OBTAIN” the book before buying it*

I kept seeing this book on TikTok (BookTok) but I was very hesitant to read it because a) I was worried that it was over-hyped and b) some of the reviews I read on here (Amazon). Overall, I really liked THIS book (ACOTAR...I'm currently reading book 2). I felt that Maas was good at describing both the human world and the Fae world and I liked being in Feyra's head as she processes everything. This is a YA novel, so, while sex is mentioned and there's a brief scene, it's nothing too bad, so this one is truly ok for YA, though I've heard that the series "grows with the readers" in the spice department. I found the 2nd half of the book the most interesting because that's when the action happens and I liked the ending a lot. The MC, Feyra, IS ignorant but that's kind of the point...she was poor, mostly uneducated, and human (humans her age only knew myths/stories about the fae, so she learns along the way). I definitely recommend this book to teens and adults who enjoy fantasy and so far, book 2 is even better!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars- so I’m like 7 years late… better late than never

I always enjoy reading a good fantasy book, especially when I’m on vacation and can actually concentrate on the plot; let’s be honest- these require us to think as things are happening because of the world building (good thing I’m on vacation).

Feyre (19) lives with her two older sisters and her disabled father. They’re poor, which means she has to hunt in order to feed her family- a family she’s responsible for ever since her mother died 8 years before. Although she only started hunting when she was 14, her family relies on her a lot. One day, she’s out hunting a doe when she sees a wolf- a huge one- one that’s trying to get the doe as well. She ends up killing it using an ash arrow as well as killing the doe. When she kills the wolf, it was almost like it had awareness of what was happening.

This wolf she killed was actually a Fae, a High Fae, who had shifted into wolf form, and his lord comes in his beast form to seek out who killed his friend and she needs to “pay”. Now, Feyre must go with him as part of the treaty and live her life in Prythian. This beast’s actually Tamlin (500+ years), the High Lord of the Spring Court, who’s also cursed to wear a mask.

There’s a lot that goes on in this book

What I liked- (gonna try not to spoil too much)
-There’s some secondary characters I really grew to appreciate (Lucien, Rhys [although I’m kind of 👀 because I read a few spoilers], Alis, shoot even Nesta [yeah yeah, I hated her at first too])

-There was a lot of world building going on, but I generally appreciate it when I’m reading a fantasy book

-The tension that we see as Tamlin and Feyre get closer and closer 🔥

-The way she’s tested and is able to overcome obstacles (the trials were FAMAZING)

-The sacrifices people made for her (Tamlin, Lucien [who I side eyed a few times- especially when she was left alone and he doesn’t come right away😑], and Rhys 👀)

-The attention to details (sometimes too much)

Things I didn’t like/wanted more of
-The maiden scene 😑. Yeah yeah. I get it. I KNOW 🙄 it was “necessary” blah blah blah... I DONT CARE! It still bothered me 😑 (if you’ve ever read my reviews, you know ow stuff bothers me lol)

-The attention to details (sometimes too much). Lol yeah I put it up above but sometimes it slowed the story down

-There were instances where the book was moving slow

-Although this isn’t necessarily a “clean” book, the 🔥 weren’t detailed and were FTB ish 😑

All the yuppies complaining about the writing and the sexual content ... what did you expect?! It's YA and a glimpse at the back cover should clue in the most clueless reader that they're in for a Twilight-type experience. Your fault. Own it. Now if this isn't your cup of tea, don't drink it. Frankly, it's not my cup of tea but, you know what, I enjoyed it! It's an easy read with nicely developed characters and a well-paced plot. Sometimes that's enough. Sure the book crescendos a bit formulaically: the ole complete three challenges and be free. Sure its sexual content is a touch cringe. But it's infrequent and, honestly, we have all read much much worse. Sure it's not James Joyce. But it is fun. Enjoy.

𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: A Court of Thorns and Roses #1

𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: ☆☆☆☆ 4/5

It is 2020 and I know, I am late to the party. Anyways, better late than never right? Since there are soo many ACOTAR fans, it was really hard not to get spoiled in the story. There were things I already knew, I just didn’t know how everything would turn out (for which I was super glad). The beginning/first half of the book felt way too slow for me, I didn’t like the pace at all. However, by the ending of the book I was super hooked and it did make up for the slow start, hence I am still giving this book a four star rating. The book had enough action (especially towards the end) to make me want to keep reading and find out what was going to happen next! The main character and also protagonist Feyre is just living a “normal” life trying to provide for her family when she gets sucked into the Fae world/realm and her world turns upside down. I do have a love/hate relationship with the relationship between Tamlin and Feyre. Some moments they had together were just really beautiful, but there were also moments when everything between them felt a bit forced and it went all just too fast. My favorite side characters were Lucien and Rhysand, they really got the party started! Both these characters made the story so much more entertaining to me: they had the humor, the had the sass, they were both just badass (you see what I did there), I am really curious as where the story will go from here!

4.0 out of 5 stars A captivating “Beauty and the Beast” retelling!

I really enjoyed this “Beauty and the Beast” retelling! Beauty and the Beast is already fantastical, but Sarah J. Maas somehow found a way to make the story more complex and whimsical. The addition of the fae made the book really interesting and kept me engaged the whole time!

One aspect I appreciated was how vulnerable the main character, Feyre Archeron, was. I have noticed that a lot of authors tend to gravitate towards making their female heroines cold and unfeeling. That was not the case here. Feyre mourned for the animals and fae she killed, which just goes to show that it is okay to be vulnerable. We are all human beneath the rough exteriors we present.

The first 200 pages contained an excessive amount of world-building which gave me pause. However, once I made it past the 200 page mark, I was able to sit back and revel in the fast-paced, action-packed environment Under the Mountain.

I read a lot of reviews before I purchased this book because I was not immediately captivated by the synopsis. The writing is good and you get immersed into the story pretty quickly. Feyre is a brave character and I really like that she has her own talents (even for a "simple human") and tries to stand on her own. However, at times she's just foolish and I can't understand her thought process on making certain decisions or accepting bargains - it's sometimes very unrealistic even for a fiction novel. My second issue is her and Tamlin falling in love, I didn't feel like it developed that part very well - I understand her liking him after a while because he's such a good character and so kind to her, but when did it go from liking to loving? There wasn't a part in which I felt them falling in love, I wish there had been more for me to understand her going after him and having to go through such challenges.
Overall it's a very entertaining book and I will continue on with the series. I'm curious to see how her character will develop, if her relationship with Tamlin will be solidified after what they went through Under the Mountain, and if Rhys will show up more.. he's quite intriguing (I want more of him!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy story with romance &elements of beauty& the beast storyline

Definitely one of the many books I saw everywhere on BookTok, and after having this book in my TBR pile, I finally read it!

When I first heard about this book, some people mentioned that it was similar “Beauty & the Beast” but mix in fairies. While reading, I could see elements similar to “Beauty & the Beast”, and I enjoyed the overall storyline.
Feyre was a wonderful character in my opinion, I loved how we saw her strength from beginning to end, and especially towards the end, she was pushed to the extreme, but no matter what, she prevailed. Tamlin was the character that keep me intrigued because, I never knew what he was truly planning (especially in the beginning of the story), but as the story progressed I started to love him just like our girl Feyre.

I loved the evolution of Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship from being total opposites ( and lowkey enemies in a way) to forming a connection that despite being different species, they actually had a lot of similarities. Feyre understood the struggles that Tamlin was faced with, and Tamlin saw how much Feyre endured in order to protect and provide for her family. The beauty between these two main characters was, that they both saw each other’s struggles, and formed a bond of mutual understanding.

I would say I loved the twists in the storyline, specifically when you find out more about the meaning between Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship towards the middle (no spoilers, you’ll know if you read the book).

I was hooked, intrigued, loved Feyre, and Tamlin. I’m curious to see how the sequel and other books will go, but so far i love this first of this series!

4 stars — You know what sucks about coming into a wildly popular series years later? You hear things…you see people talking about things. And so you end up with expectations, or hints to plots or characters or whatever.

So what’s the result? The result is that I couldn’t just let myself go while reading like I should have. I found it hard to invest in some characters and relationships. I started having theories that could make things work out for where I was in the book, even though I knew they probably weren’t true…and they weren’t.

But the thing is, despite all that, I was sucked into this story. I kept wanting to see what was going to happen. I was curious about the secrets being kept, and how pieces of the original story/stories would play out. I’d entirely forgotten that Beauty & the Beast is also based loosely on Cupid and Psyche…until we got Under the Mountain, and then I remembered pieces of that mythology. I appreciated the ways in which Ms. Maas wove elements of those tales into her own tale. I think knowing it was a retelling might have also given me certain expectations, and so don’t expect it to follow faithfully. That’s probably where the story lost me the most. I wanted to fall in love with the Beast…I wanted a romance to ship…and, well, that’s not quite what I got.

I don’t read a lot of Fae/Faerie stories, so I enjoyed all the new kinds of creatures, and the way their part of the world was laid out. It was all pretty new to me, so it all worked. I will admit that I’m not sure I’m ever going to be a huge fan of Fae/Faerie, since, you know, they’re kind of cruel a**holes in many circumstances. Even the good ones are jerks a lot of the time.

As for Feyre? I don’t know. She starts out so cold and remote. And I thawed towards her a little for sure, but I’m not super girl crushing on her or anything. I definitely feel for her though, especially given that ending. Maybe that’s also why I’m feeling so out of sorts — because she’s left feeling SUPER out of sorts at the end there. AND I still don’t know how all these things that I know about the series are actually going to play out.

SO yeah. I definitely enjoyed it, but I’m also feeling cautious and wary. I’m hoping the next book is what I need to really pull me all the way into the fandom.

This review is specifically for book one of this series: the writing is good, not amazing. The story is interesting from the start and quickly ramps up so that you won't be able to put it down. There is a fun Beauty and the Beast element to it that quickly turns into it's own fantasy plot. Nothing too spicy, though there is sexual tension. I thought it was a quick easy read, but by the end I was so frustrated with Feyre and Tamlin's relationship it took me almost 2 months to move on to the next book and I only did so because I was interested in Feyre's story.
This series brought me out of a 5 year book slump where I barely ready a book a year after having been an avid reader my whole life. I devoured the next 4 books, and now I feel like I am in middle school again obsessed with this series like I was with Twilight wearing a Team Edward shirt to school. I look back at book one as essential story building, and will likely reread it to appreciate where the story goes. If you enjoyed the book even in the slightest, read A Court of Mist & Fury and you won't regret it.
