I am not sure what to say about this book. It would be easy to be a spoiler... times two, literally. This book is about second chances and what-if's. It's about things we think about from time to time.. What if I did this instead of this? What if I chose the opposite that one time? How would things have worked out? Would my life be better or worse? Would I still end up where I am now?

In life, we always have a choice resulting from more than one option. We always chose what we either want more or what we think is best. Who are we to know that that particualr decision, no matter how insignificant it seems, is the right one? Does every decision we make set off a separate chain of events... sending our lives into a completely different path?

This story is equally heartwarming and heartbreaking. You will find yourself so full of emotions, you won't know what is up and what is down. You may see up as down and down as up. The story is written with such great talent, you won't be able to decide which path was the correct path or incorrect path. Reid has such a talent for messing with your head and emotions, you will be equally mad and pleased with this book.

I was equally pleased and displeased with this book... I didn't know which story was the better of the two. One minute I was begging for the pain to stop, then the next minute I was smiling with a full heart. This is not like any other book you have read. It is so well written, there is no way you can't fall in love with this story. You will need a box of tissues and a stiff drink to make it through this one.

2.0 out of 5 starsHair buns + cinnamon buns = boring.....
Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2022
Ok, so haven't finished reading this yet and I'm not sure if I will. My kindle says I'm 36% done and I'm not sure how much more I can take. I read the '7 Husband of Evelyn Hugo' and found it to be such a fun, captivating read that I couldn't wait to read another book by the same author. I found the premise of this story with two alternate versions of reality based upon a single, split-second decision one night to be interesting. But I can't decide which version of events is more boring. Additionally, a few pages in, I'm wondering if all of the protagonists in books by this author have big boobs? Seriously, this is the defining feature of the main character Hannah. She has big boobs, she always wears a hair bun high on her head and is obsessed with cinnamon buns in a way that makes it very, very weird. Buns, buns, buns. Oh and boobs. Physical voluptuousness aside, Hannah is a flat character and her friend Gabby's defining feature is pontificating politically correct feminism. The male characters are (so far) pretty one-dimensional. The characters and storyline are just not that interesting to me my expectations were set much higher from reading another book by the author first.
Edit: It is important for me to add how disappointed I am in the part of the book where the protagonist tries to take a stray dog on a city bus and lies about the dog being a service dog. This type of behavior, which is sadly quite normalized, is very harmful to people who actually have legitimate service dogs and often have to fight for accommodations.

“It doesn’t matter if we don’t mean to do the things we do. It doesn’t matter if it was an accident or a mistake. It doesn’t even matter if we think this is all up to fate. Because regardless of our destiny, we still have to answer for our actions. We make choices, big and small, every day of our lives, and those choices have consequences. We have to face those consequences head-on, for better or worse. We don’t get to erase them just by saying we didn’t mean to. Fate or not, our lives are still the results of our choices. I’m starting to think that when we don’t own them, we don’t own ourselves.”

I’m trying to put into words how this book made me feel and I just feel I’m not going to do it justice. Taylor Jenkins Reid just became my favorite author outside of the thriller world. Every book I’ve read by her has been so beautifully written. Each time she writes something, it’s so thought provoking and meaningful. 50 pages into this book and I knew that it was going to destroy me. The storyline and the way this book is written is so clever and satisfying. Each chapter alternates between her choice to go home with Gabby or Ethan. It explores fate v choice. If something is meant to be, will it happen no matter what? Another thing I love in her stories are how genuine and strong the friendships are between the characters. Five minutes after finishing it I started to cry as it all sank in. I’ll think about this book for a long time.

Cara
5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed the "Sliding Doors" structure of this novel
Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2015

This book was one of those novels that made you really question your own life choices and missteps. "What if I wouldn't have moved home? What if I wouldn't have gone to that party?" type of questions. And any story that can resonate that deeply gets five stars in my book.

Taylor Jenkins Reid's writing is simplistic with just enough details to keep you turning the page, and with two stories happening simultaneously, it's something she does very well. I really enjoyed the "Sliding Doors" structure of this novel.

SPOILER ALERT: My only criticism was that I wasn't sure if I would've liked the novel better if she would've ended up with Ethan either way. The practical side of me believes and sides with the way it ended - that we have many romantic matches out there.

But the romantic in me wanted her to end up with Ethan in both versions to prove that we do have a predestined soul mate, and either path she would've taken would have led her back to Ethan, her true love.

I'm torn on the ending, but ultimately, loved the book! I'll be reading her next book as soon as it's available!

Sliding Doors is one of my favorite movies even though the dialogue is so bad I am suspect it was written by a 12 year old. I love it because it has two storylines running parallel to each other. What if Gwenth didn't miss her train? This story is the same plot. What if Hannah didn't go home early? What if she stayed out with her old boyfriend instead? I couldn't put it down. It was a fun read with a few deep moments thrown in. If parallel universes do exist, I hope I read this book in every one of them!

I’m on a Taylor Jenkins Reid reading binge right now, and loving every minute of it. It’s always exciting to hear new music or read new books that really resonate with you.

Maybe in another universe I read this book and left a bad review.
In that case, you should understand that I’m a miserable cow in that parallel life and never even bothered to read the first chapter. Ignore me and read the book.

As much as we want to believe in one soul mate, it’s only logical there is more than one person out there to fill that spot. I love the way this story unfolds and each version is satisfying. I cried, as I have with each of her books, several times. It is not a depressing story but a heartfelt one. I recently discovered Taylor Jenkins Reid and I am so glad I did. Her characters are real and their conversations are too. No cheesy dialogue. No alfa males. I love everything I have read of hers so far!

This is the first book I've read in awhile that I really, really enjoyed. It's a refreshing look at the "Sliding Door" concept. If you had made a different choice at some point, would your life have been better or worse? I thought the author did a terrific job changing from one path one chapter to another the next, without confusing the reader. Both lives were equally entertaining and I found myself wanting to hurry up and read it to see what happens and at the same time not wanting it to end. I don't want to give anything away by telling any of the story but I can assure you a good read.
I'm going back and read the author's other two books.

I bought this book because I wanted to believe in something more. More than fantasy fiction, more than just another novel I cant get past the second chapter on. I found it, I found my something more. I read this book in 5 days and as a mother with 4 children and a full time job that's impressive. I was hooked from the minute I started reading it. I have since ordered every books Taylor Jenkins Reid has ever written. Her writing spoke to me. It made me happy and sad all in the same chapter. It also made me think about life and love and all the choices that we make that lead us down different paths. Could stand to be my favorite book of all time but we'll see.

Maybe in Another Life was such an addictive read. I loved the breezy writing, suspense as to the events unfolding in the parallel realities, and the realistic dialogue. This book also definitely made me think about choices and destiny on a philosophical level, and I highlighted several passages of the text.

Although romantic elements are definitely present throughout the story, Maybe in Another Life delved deeply into themes of self-discovery, friendship, and what it means to be a family. A well-rounded book that I highly recommend!
