If you're into house books, you'll be familiar with this type of book: it showcases a wide number of mountain/outdoorsy homes, featuring each in a few pages with photos and text. If you're like me and adore such books, you'll find yourself dreamily paging through the pages, gleaning various ideas about interior design and even house building. The houses are all modern, yes, but many play with organic "mountain" shapes and textures and forms.
So why four stars instead of five? It could be because of the format or it could be because of the quality of the photos, but I'm convinced that I've seen much prettier coffee table books about houses. The images are nice and the subject matter is photogenic, but the book simply doesn't mesmerize me with its beauty. I'm not condemning this book, just saying I'm unwilling to go to 5 stars for a book that isn't 100% dazzling.
The title is misleading: "Mountain Modern: Contemporary Homes in High Places"; "Modern" and "Contemporary Homes" are not misleading but in my opinion "Mountain" and "High Places" are misleading: this is a summary of the elevation of the places where the homes are:
In feet: Min. 1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max. 200 961 2389 2812 4600 7000
In meters: Min. 1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max. 60 293 728 864 1400 2133
Great book. A very insightful look into the thought and design processes behind some truly unique, contemporary homes. Superb photography and layout design has inspired me greatly. I look forward to future titles.
