Superman Unchained is a New 52 storyline surrounding Lex Luthor’s escape from a high Security Prison and a nonstop battle with a new villain or ally of Superman’s named Wraith. Wraith is a cross between Doomsday and Zod.
The writing for this storyline was smart and fun to read that felt fresh and new, perfect for what DC has done with the New 52 series. Scott Snyder does an excellent job of humanizing Superman but at the same time bringing about the iconic character he has grown to be.
What can one say about Jim Lee’s art other than it’s amazing. Lee’s talent knows no bounds. His renderings of Batman and Superman tell a story in and of themselves and were the main reason I picked up this title. Not only does he draw the characters superbly, but he details even the most minute item on a page that allows you to escape into the DC universe.
This trade brings together all 9 issues from the Superman: Unchained series and even has 3 separate sections that have each additional cover for issues 1-9, a directors cut storyline section for pages 1 to 19 that take you through the writing process Snyder wrote behind the scenes and several pages of Jim Lee’s pencil drawings that really show the detail without the color and inking that Sinclair and Kalisz worked on.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of Superman or who is getting back into Superman. The story itself is entertaining and lively that keeps you interested and the art I can’t say enough things about. Pick up your own copy today and you will not be disappointed.
