4.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyed this book!

I am a huge fan of CJ Box, William Kent Krueger, Jeff Carson, and Randy Wayne Wright. Having said that, I am very inclined to put Jeff Doiron in that category. I like the stories of game wardens, cops, and [whatever Doc Ford is] in wilderness locales. Mike Bowditch, the hero in this book, starts out as a green, irresponsible, whiny kid/ probie game warden. He kind of begs you to dislike him. The cool thing is, we actually see him grow up as the story proceeds. Some decent development of the co-characters and their interactions with Mike. Lots of tying in the Maine wilderness, game warden “stuff,” and flying a seaplane. I am probably a bit dense, but I really did not see the ending. Makes perfect sense in retrospect. Also makes the book that much more interesting. Makes me want to learn more about Mike’s development and character interactions. That is why I immediately bought the second book in the series! If you like wilderness stories, check out this book.

The sense of being in the main woods is the best thing about this tale. However, the only likeable characters are minor characters Charlie an ex-warden and his wife. But how can main character Mike even be sane in the insane world of this book? Mike's father calls him before Mike finds out his father is accused of murder. The immediate assumption here by everyone but Mike that his dad is the killer is far fetched to the point that the rest of law enforcement seem incompetent. Angst over mike's treatment, or his dad's lack of interest when he was a lad suffocates the begining of the novel. Characters seem to unrealistically dislike Mike because they think his father is guilty. And there is an amazing double standard in how Mike is treated as a law enforcement officer. Mike gives this jerk a ticket for not having permits and life vests. The guy files a complaint. Mike's boss seems to back him. Mike sees the same guy later with no vest on his young son and gives him another. This is something that could result in tragedy if the boat top sided. . But in this world now Mike is in trouble. How could he go after a guy who filed a complaint. Meanwhile a deputy who had problems with Mike's dad in the past arrests him without evidence. The cop car crashed and dad escapes. Dad goes on the run. It could be because he knows the deputy is out to get him. This guy now hates Mike's dad and will do anything to pin the murder on him. It seems to be the main reason Mike's dad is considered the killer. No one knows a motive why the dad would kill the people in question, there were better suspects. No one in the novel has any problem with the deputy with previous problems with the dad, being in on the case. Mike is referred to as a coward. Yet when law enforcement think they have his dad trapped, and are going to shoot up a cabin to get him (and yes the TRIGGER-HAPPY deputy with the grudge is there) Mike, who is not supposed to really be there, almost gets shot saving the lives of who is inside.
What is really annoying is that Mike seems mostly helpless in this novel. He does take action until the end and almost seems to sleepwalk into it in a world where most of the people seem indifferent or nasty. I suggest skip this one.

I recently finished a series by Christine Carbo and really enjoyed it. While reading the reviews someone mentioned the Mike Bowditch series so I looked it up. I bought this book and intended to read it while my boyfriend was out of town for work. I received the book on a Friday and set it on my kitchen counter. Well my boyfriend picked it up and before I knew it he was half way through it. I told him to be sure he finished it before he left town because I wanted to read it while he was gone. He finished it in less than 2 days and loved it. I took nearly a week to read it but also found it hard to put down. I'm already reading the 2nd one and am enjoying it. I love the subject matter.

The Poacher’s Son by Paul Doiron was intriguing for a city girl like me. I enjoyed reading about the backwoods lifestyle, though I had to research several terms I was unfamiliar with. But the experience was worth the effort.

Mike’s relationship with his father was the glue holding the story together. Despite evidence to the contrary, I understood Mike’s blind faith in his father’s innocence and I sympathized with his need to support his father. Unfortunately, his father didn’t feel the same and let his son down many times on many levels. This relationship took the reader beyond the book into life’s lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars what a first book in the series

I now can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Mike Bowditch is a fantastic character. Full of strength and flaws and a heart that lets him be the best at his ejob as Game Warden. The whole conflict with his father was so well done and so heart wrenching, Doiron really gives you an incredible character set — the father, Jack, and Mike, his mother, his boss Kathy, and Charley. Can’t wait to read the next (okay the rest) of the series.

I love Paul Doiron’s writing! He pulls me in and hooks me from the first words. I’ve read almost all of his other books but somehow missed this one. I’m so glad I found it. It’s a perfect beginning to this series. I seriously recommend starting with this one if you haven’t done what I did. It’s so good to learn how Mike Bowditch got started. All of his characters are perfect, but in this series, Mike is the most important one and this is the start of him.

The Poacher's Son was the first book written by Mike Bowditch, who is a new author to me. What an excellent book...a first rate story, and characters. Everything about it held my interest and kept me reading. The descriptions of Maine scenery made me feel as if I were in the midst of it. I enjoyed every bit of it and can hardly wait to read another by Bowditch. What a find.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure if Doiron'sfirst book was truly good, or merely another book by a Maine writer

After having followed Paul Doiron in Downeast magazine, I was curious about his novels. In Maine, anyone with Maine roots who writes something that gets printed gets some publicity. I wasn't sure if Doiron'sfirst book was truly good, or merely another book by a Maine writer. So - I waited. Finally, upon getting a new kindle that was ripe for good summer reading, I purchased the first of Doiron's Mike Bowditch books. I was immediately drawn into the character ands the plot. I also found myself learning a lot about the Maine Warden service of which I was totally ignorant. After finishing his first book, I quickly downloaded the second, and am now happily chugging my way through the third in the series. I highly recommend it! Mike Bowditch is a flawed guy - totally believable - who finds himself time and again in trouble because his choices blend his conscience as well as his upbringing. The two are often in conflict. Doiron was right to give up his editor's job at Downeast. He's has a real talent for writing engaging backwoods stories.

This mystery novel has so many pluses, including the detailed description of the job of a game warden as well as depicting the wilds of northern Maine. Most importantly it weaves an incredible storyline about a man and his father. I consider this a must read for anyone looking for entertainment and enlightenment.

Absolutely loved this first in series by Paul Doiron. I read Knife Creek first, and knew I wanted more of the gritty but tenderhearted Mike Bowditch, the Maine game warden that does like my heroines do...persists with a case when lesser souls would follow procedure. In this first book, his mettle is tested when his "bar brawler" of a father is implicated in a cop killer case with implications, and a manhunt through their home woods keeps tension high.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good Game Warden.

This is the first Mike Bowditch story I have read. It's the first in the series. I enjoy game warden mysteries, like CJ Box' Joe Picket. Mike lives in Maine and has his personal problems that build his character. Not that I would want his problems. But, I do envy his determination to be the man he wants to be, regardless. And he pays a price. He is frustrating in the way he approaches these. Some of his actions seam confusing, at least to me. I wonder why he does what he does, why didn't he approach it another way and leave himself an out. He closes doors and the only thing going for him is the other people in his life that are forgiving and supportive. But, overall I highly recommend Mike, besides he live lives next door to me.

There are books that are entertaining to read, but that are no more than that. And than there are those that are so well written that you are living the story and in the end you can’t believe,it’s over. This book is one of the latter. The vivid description of the characters and the setting doesn’t give you a choice but to become part of the story.
