Cute premise, annoying editing
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2015
While this story had a cute premise and interesting characters, it needed better editing. Not for spelling or grammar (thank goodness since I've seen a LOT of those), but for logic and flow. The flow problem was due to a lot of repetition. The characters thought and rethought the same issues over and over. The book also reused the same phrases multiple times. Sometimes in sequential paragraphs. Sometimes in sequential sentences. Despite this, the book still would have squeaked by with 4 stars.
What was more annoying (and lost the extra star) were logic problems. Twice in the story they referred to a kiss that was supposed to have happened when they first met. It never happened. I checked. I suspect that it was in an initial draft, was removed, but the later references to it were left in. That's sloppy editing and breaks me out of the flow of the story. If I have to stop with a "Wait, did that actually happen?" and go look it up, I get annoyed. Also, one of the characters mentions that she looked up the medical record for someone whose name (according to the story) she didn't know from a city and state she was not in. The whole premise of the story was that she spent 5 years not knowing who the mystery man she'd operated on was because his name was top secret and now she is mysteriously able to find out information about another person whose name was top secret?
So overall, a somewhat enjoyable read that needs a good once over by an editor who is paying attention.
