I really enjoyed the story and in particular learning about the history of Pisa. have been to Italy and am now sorry I missed seeing Pisa. I didn't realize the wonderful history behind the building of the town square and the work that went into the baptistery, the domo and the tower. I love historical novels in general and this one was informational as well as enjoyable to learn of life in the 1100s and some of the people who were responsible for the buildings. I would not describe the book as "heart wrenching". I thought it was thoughtful with some sad parts but also happy parts. All in all a good read.
