One of the things that I especially enjoy about Jennifer Nielsen's books is how quickly she gets into the action. Not only do I enjoy that, but so do young readers, especially middle grade readers. If a book isn't interesting right off the bat, a lot of students won't stick with it. While this book is historical fiction, a genre that many middle grade readers aren't very interested in, it doesn't read like a boring history book at all. In fact it reads more like a thriller.

One morning Gerta wakes up to discover a wall shutting her off from her father and brother. She's left in East Berlin with her mother and her older brother, Fritz. Four years later, Gerta still can't help staring at the wall and thinking about what's on the other side. And seeing her brother and then her father for the first time in four years is exciting but also dangerous when a East German soldier spots her doing it. It's also baffling. Gerta's father is dancing? Eventually Gerta figures out what her father is trying to tell her and finds the perfect place to build a tunnel. But is it worth the risk? After Gerta's friend's brother is killed trying to escape, Gerta isn't so sure. Until it becomes clear that her family has been marked by the Stasi, the East German Secret Police, and have very little to look forward to in the future. With her brother's help, Gerta works to build the tunnel. But with so many eyes on them, is it even possible to get the tunnel built? And even if they build the tunnel, they have little time remaining before Fritz must report to the military to serve. Can they keep their secret long enough to escape? And will their mother come with them if they do?

Nielsen's written a real page-turner. I couldn't wait to find out how things turned out for Gerta and her family. Not only is this an exciting book to read but it's also eye-opening in the historical details it provides about living behind the Berlin Wall. Another great book from one of my favorite authors.

I had never read anything about the wall so was interested with the story. Very predictable as you could anticipate all the drama you might expect in such a story. Written in just no pizzazz. Enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Riveting historical YA

Wow! I love when a book leaves me breathless and overwhelmed by its powerful message. This YA book is perfect for adults. I loved the historical content about the Berlin wall built in the 1960’s and how it affected families. In this book, the wall goes up overnight while the father and brother are over in West Berlin trying to find an apartment for their family to live in when they leave. Overnight a family is divided, and years go by without a word between them. The government is in control of their lives now. The easterners have no freedom, and are taught that freedom and individuality is evil, and those who want it are evil as well. Gerta is the 12-year-old heroine in this story. I absolutely loved that girl. What she goes through day by day is horrific, and her plan to get out courageous. This perfect is perfect, in my opinion. It has a great theme, deep characters who struggle and struggle, a intriguing and terrifying setting in Communist East Berlin. I can’t say enough good about it. It’s definitely one of my new favorites. My son and I couldn’t put it down once we started and finished in two days.

GCTop Contributor: Children's Books

It passed. It more than passed. This thrilling children's novel is worthy of my grandchildren's time...and mine. It has great characters, a vivid setting, a gripping plot, conflict upon conflict, a tense climax, and an ending that makes you glad you read the book. It might be the next Anne of Green Gables. Well, it's nothing like Anne except that the character is feisty and produced loyalty in this reader. The history side of this piece of historical fiction fascinated me. As I was two years from birth when the Berlin Wall went up, the Cold War was a very real part of my childhood. However, I'm grateful to have grown up with Western liberty instead of Eastern oppression. My grandchildren's generation is as oblivious of this history as I was of conflicts before my time. The Cold War is especially important to explore with the division of ideals in the USA nearly identical to those of that time period.

This was such an engaging, fast paced historical fiction set in a time that a lot of historical fictions aren't. I loved that it was middle grade; it was clean, not too violent, but still taught the history and showed us as the reader what it might be like to live in East Berlin at that time.

This book was so full of suspense-we are constantly reminded how dangerous what they're doing is, there's a lot of tension in whether or not they'll be caught. There were a lot of sad moments, in good ways, but the feeling of the book is hopeful and it has a very strong theme of freedom (exploring it in the context of loyalty and doing what's right). The family relationships and friendships in this are complex and beautifully portrayed. The character growth comes mostly for side characters, though the main character does learn and grow.

The one thing that nagged at me as I read is that it felt a little unbelievable that they didn't actually get caught and stopped at some point. This wasn't a huge deal and it was almost believable. I still enjoyed the book for what it was.

Overall, an excellent historical fiction for children or adults.

I am a librarian and conducted a lunchtime book club with this book after it was previewed in the Scholastic Book Fair video. Historical fiction is my favorite genre, so it was my personal top choice. this book sold more copies than any other title the fair. I split the book into three parts for us to read and discuss, but at our first lunch meeting, they all confessed that they had finished the whole book! It was enthralling. I promised the students that I'd double up in reading and finish 2/3 of the book by our next meeting- a week away. I did! Once the action began to reach the climax, I could not read fast enough! My fingers wanted to turn the page before my eyes finished reading. Heart pounding. Holding my breath. I felt exhausted after the end! Fantastic book. Will recommend to my students!

4.0 out of 5 stars the binding a little bent, but a great book!

Jennifer Nielsen has joined the ranks of “authors Kim will read no matter what”. She hasn’t written a thing I don’t like. She writes with such emotion and I very rarely look at page numbers while reading her books. With all that established, I have to admit that this is her weakest work so far. That does not mean it is bad, it simply means that A Night Divided is not my favorite of her books. I enjoyed this book very much, the only issue is that sometimes, while the characters were dealing with their boring existence in Communist East Berlin, that monotony came out for me, the reader, as well. That is the only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5. I love how Donnelly showed the practical side of life under Communism; the little things that we as Americans take for granted like the freedom to listen to music, or say the things we are thinking, no matter what we’re thinking. The scenes where Gerta goes to the market and the shelves being empty of most things except cabbage was especially potent. I would suggest this book to most millennials, no matter their age. The suspense that Donnelly created, especially near the end, made me forget any boredom I was feeling near the beginning. This is another book that I would tell high school and middle school teachers to keep on their shelves. And the cover is amazing. And everyone should read it. And now I want to visit Germany. And I’m going to start writing all my reviews in this short sentence, list format. Ok, just kidding! 😊 I really liked this book and I think everyone else should read it as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Reading!

Realistic, gripping story of what it must have been like for East Berliners following the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961. As an American citizen, I had a pen pal in East Berlin in 1963 whose brother escaped to the west, and my pen pal was arrested and held for one year as they thought he might be following his brother's escape. In 1967, after corresponding for 4 years (yes, our letters were censored!), I traveled from Denmark where I was studying for my Junior Year Abroad and we met in person in East Berlin. He told many stories about life behind the Berlin Wall that he couldn't write about in letters. It was an unbelievably oppressive existence. Jennifer Nielsen did her research in relating Greta's story. Details are very accurate. Freedom should not be taken for granted!

When I hear the 1960s, I associate the decade with Neil Armstrong and his stepping on the moon, JFK’s assassination, lots of classic TV shows, and even my parents’ childhood. For other people, they can probably only associate one thing with the 1960s – that fateful day Berlin was divided and the Wall that continued to haunt their lives for 28 years. I remember learning about the Berlin Wall and Reagan's famous quote in social studies; yet, I never pursued reading any further information. A Night Divided was the first historical fiction I read on the subject and I must say Ms. Nielsen does a fantastic job with drawing the readers into this ghastly point in history.

Gerta, her brother Fritz, and their mother wake up one morning to find a fence separating them from West Berlin but more tragically, from their father and other brother who went to West Berlin only 2 days before. The book is told by Gerta, who struggles under the oppressiveness of the GDR while attempting to dig a tunnel to the other side with hopes to unite her divided family. Gerta’s voice is strong and mature for a 12 year old girl as her circumstances force her to grow up before her time. Her courage and will to be free are admirable while her struggle to forgive and understand the world’s cruelties is plausible.

I must warn potential readers that you will not want to put this book down. From the first page, it is nonstop and Nielsen keeps you on edge with each new plot development (we fans know she is an expert at this!). Working and even sleeping got in my way of finishing this book sooner than I actually did. The provided historical pictures and map prior to the story prepare the readers for the somber yet hopeful mood of the book and many of the quotes at each chapter’s beginning will stay with you. A Night Divided is a book that should be read by every historical fiction fan and every social studies classroom. I think it is safe to say that Nielsen is wonderful at writing fantasy and historical fiction!

I had my middle schooler read this and it was fantastic realistic fiction. We used this to supplement learning about the communist regime in East Germany because it really helped the reader understand what people may have gone through. My youngest who is 8 enjoyed listening to the middle schooler read it aloud. My kids got to see my East German money, watch videos on Trabants, watch historical footage on when the wall fell as well as when the wall was built. My oldest who struggles with learning really loved this book and I felt it was well written with broad appeal.

4.0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into history that should not be forgotten

I downloaded this book to my Kindle when my 12-yo grandson was reading it as part of his required summer reading list. It proved an wonderful discussion topic for us reading the same book at the same time. EXCELLENT for readers in middle school and beyond. For those of us who lived through the Cold War, it is a reminder of why the war existed. For those who weren't alive yet, it is a wonderful glimpse into a history they may not totally understand. My only regret was that it was a piece of fiction that for some reason I didn't realize until the end. I thought it was a true story. However, having visited Berlin after the fall of the wall, I visited the Checkpoint Charlie museum and there are many true stories that mirror this fictional one.
