4.0 out of 5 starsThe sequel is even better!
Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2019
I'm usually pretty bad about reading sequels because I'm both easily distracted and a cheapskate, so sometimes years will go by before I'll say to myself, "You know, I really liked X book, maybe it's time I should read the sequel to X book..." but of course, I never do. Or at least, I usually don't. I read the prequel to this book, THE OPPORTUNIST, just a few days ago, and I've already finished DIRTY RED with my eye on THE THIEF. It's that addictive.

While reading, I kept wondering what this series reminded me of, and then it hit me: BIG LITTLE LIES. This Love Me with Lies (see? it even has "lies" in the title) is like a smuttier, trashier version of BIG LITTLE LIES. Maybe if BIG LITTLE lies were written by Jackie Collins instead of Lianne Moriarty.

The first book is written from Olivia's POV, in both "past" and "present," and we see all the scheming and conniving Olivia had to do to not just meet Caleb the first time but to steal him back later. This book is written from the "other woman", Leah's, POV, and as with Olivia, we get to see all the scheming and conniving Leah had to do to steal him again and then try to hold onto him. Not an easy task, because as we saw in THE OPPORTUNIST, Caleb's not all sweetness and light, either.

It's been a while since I read about a character who was so flawed and repulsive and yet still managed to be interesting. I think the last one was probably one of the women in that 70s potboiler classic, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Leah obviously has some sort of personality disorder - she's clingy, needy, manipulative, and cruel. The things she does to Caleb and then, (spoiler) to her own daughter are just awful. And yet you can't help but feel bad for her, because technically (well, not technically - actually) Olivia is the other woman and Leah is just trying to hold onto what's hers. The problem is that she won Caleb's affection through false pretenses, just as Olivia did, and sees him more as a prize to be won and displayed than as an actual person with thoughts and feelings. In many ways, she and Olivia are cut from the same cloth, and you find that out when more of Leah's backstory is revealed in this book and you discover just how messed up of a person she is, as well as her family.

Like THE OPPORTUNIST, this story is told in "past" and "present." The writing in this book, however, is a real step up from its prequel. The characterization is excellent, and Leah bursts from the pages in a way that Olivia really didn't - maybe because the author tried too hard to make Oliviafeel like a sympathetic character, whereas Leah just gets to completely be her wretched, awful self. I loved it. How often do you get a truly disgusting antiheroine as a protagonist? It's so rare. I devoured this book in a single day, feeling as giddy as a person working their way through a tub of illicit 2AM ice cream. I know that this is trash, but oh what decadent, glorious trash it is. I want more.

Dirty Red is the sequel to The Opportunist and number two in the Love Me With Lies series. Whereas the first part was from Olivia Kaspen's point of view, Dirty Red is told from Leah Drake's point of view. Leah is Dirty Red(head) and happens to be the person Caleb Drake married when Olivia left him.

First off let me tell you that these are no standalone books - you absolutely have to read the first book in order to get into the story, or else your lost on the many important details. Because when you read Part 1 you understand what a manipulative and opportunistic bitch Olivia is. Are you are hinted at the fact that Leah is the same. Well turns out that hint was a winner and you find out what Leah is like as a wife and mother, because it turns out she tricked Caleb into having a child in order to keep him for herself.

The whole book basically shows the battle between Olivia and Lead to earn Caleb's love. It was a nice read, but except for the end, when something nice happens to one of the characters (which is a nice change because most of the times the book is pretty depressing and desperate) - I didn't really feel too excited.

Actually, I started to feel really bad for Caleb, because what he has to deal with is a nightmare and reading on is frustrating; for Caleb and not for the reader but ultimately the reader starts to feel this frustration for him. And the much expected turn of event where you would think Leah would change... well spoiler but it never comes.

Having read all three books from the series, this one is more of a means to get to book 3, but nevertheless totally worth the read for a great Part 3.

‘Dirty Red’ is the second installment in the ‘Love Me With Lies’ book series. I read the first installment in this series a few years ago and I was absolutely enthralled by this story. After reading the blurb of the second installment that hinted that this book will be told from Leah’s perspective, I was hesitant to give it a read because I was rooting for a HEA for Caleb and Olivia in the first installment in this series, but things took a different course due to Leah’s meddling ways. So I was not a fan of Leah and had no intentions of reading her book, but after finally giving it a shot I’m seriously kicking myself that it took me years to finally read this installment because it was AMAZING!

Let me start off by saying that I was not a fan of Leah after reading the first installment in this series. She was the antagonist of the first installment and she in my opinion basically ruined a possible future for Caleb and Olivia due to her meddling. After reading the second installment I’m in limbo about how I feel about Leah. I don’t want to give too much away, but in this installment we also get to see snippets of the past and present and it seems like Leah has had quite a troubling past. After reading this book, I also have a a better understanding of her and why she’s so cunning.

This installment not only changed my opinion about Leah, but also about Caleb. Again I’m not going to give too much away, but it seems like there’s much more to it than I initially thought.

Overall, this was a very enthralling and beautifully written book. The book also ended on a cliffhanger that left me stunned. My curiosity has definitely been piqued and I’m very interested to see how things will unfold in the following installment of this book series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Love Hate kind of book!

I'm going to keep this review simple and to the point.

When I finished The Opportunist my heart hurt so deeply, and then I realized the next book in the series was Leah's book. To say that I didn't want to read this book would be an understatement, however I am one who has to know where the story is going to go especially one that pulls your heart out of your chest like this one did to me.

I won't use the word Hate, because that is just such a strong word and one I try to avoid. Now I couldn't stand Leah. Reading Dirty Red especially the beginning of the book did nothing but confirm how I felt about her. She was downright vile, and the extent of her lies just baffled me. Now I will admit that the more I read I eventually couldn't help but to feel sorry for Leah. Yes she is a terrible person, but as you read you grow to understand her thought process, her childhood and the way she was treated. Not giving her excuses by any means but I definitely was able to have a clearer mind on understanding who she was as a person and the drive behind her obsession with Caleb.

I am definitely glad I read this story, because it is needed to understand every aspect of the storyline. The being able to see every angle of this crazy love story gives new light and I love Tarryn's words. She truly does write such beautiful raw stories!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Protagonist You will Love to Hate

I really didn’t like Leah in book 1, but in book 2 I HATED her! There was a point, toward the end of the book, when I thought: maybe she will turn it around, maybe this will be the point where her character becomes dynamic, rather than the shady and manipulative flat character that she is.
But, nope! She’s the protagonist that everyone will love to hate.
I thought Olivia’s story (book 1) was better. I don’t know if it was because I liked Olivia’s character better, or if it was because the ending was a bit better. Maybe a combination of the two.
I understand that there is a book 3 (which I have already downloaded), so perhaps that’s why book 2 ended so abruptly. Regardless, I’d have still liked a bit more closure, personally.
Additionally, I feel like Sam’s addition to the story was weird. He seemed pretty willing to provide Leah with intel concerning his cousin (and Olivia) - where were the family ties? And Courtney? Whatever happened with Leah’s decision regarding Courtney? And, Cash, for that matter??? Does Leah’s story just end like that?
If Leah’s proclamation at the end of the story was, indeed, true, then I can maybe see Seth’s role in this story (if he is the one), but it was also pretty weird to me that it took Leah’s story for readers to know that Seth even existed (unless he made a quick entrance/exit in book 1 that I missed).
All in all, I did enjoy the book. There were just a few raggedy ends that I wished had been sewn together neater. I will be reading book 3, as I MUST see what happens to Olivia, Caleb, Leah, and Estelle!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book sucked me in

What in the world did I just read?! This book sucked me in, put me through a whirlwind of emotions that left me spinning, and then blew my mind.

I read this book in less than 24 hours. I can’t even remember the last time I did that. Leah is so wonderfully, wickedly twisted that I just had to know what was going to happen next. It’s been a long time since I read The Opportunist, and I had trouble remembering what all happened in that book, so I really appreciated the flashbacks that were in this book to events that happened in TO. I really enjoyed the buildup of what happened in the past that led up to what was happening in the present.

Leah. I just had to shake my head at her during most of the book. There were times where I really felt sorry for her. She didn’t deserve the way her parents treated her at all. She was in love with a man that just couldn’t love her the way she loved him. That’s pretty sad. But on the other hand, she drove me absolutely crazy with some of the things she did and decisions she made. As a mother myself, I just couldn’t believe how indifferent she was about her daughter. It just blew my mind the way she would pass her off. Was she really suffering from postpartum depression? Was she just that indifferent about her child? I guess we’ll never know for sure. Leah was a whackadoodle, but she sure was interesting.

I enjoyed Sam’s character. He was funny and offered a little bit of a balance to Leah. For all the snark she threw his way, he gave it right back to her. I also love that he wasn’t afraid to call her out on her crap.

I’m really looking forward to reading Thief so I can see Caleb’s point of view through everything that happened. I’m sure to be in for another wild ride!

4.0 out of 5 stars Whoa and super wow!

I must say I am UTTERLY impressed that Ms. Fisher gave us a book, book 2 in her series of 3 that is devoted to the hateful character of Leah. No way, I thought to myself as I began to read, how will I possibly stay riveted to that awful woman's nasty little POV?? And yet here I am to tell you it was a hell of a ride! I thought this could get to be the cliche story of the spoiled rotten souled little rich girl, but it never quagmires there, which is an amazing feat. We actually follow her totally shocking, unhappy, nutty, insecure bratty train of thought laughing at her, rolling our eyes with her, half the time despising her then feeling sorry for her. Leah's story is very stifling (and yeah I needed serious oxygen while reading about this train wreck!) story is integral to the epic hurricane that is the relationship of Caleb and Olivia. We get to see Leah hatch her nasty little plots to hold onto her man, it's actually a relief to see her and Caleb's hollow and dreary relationship thru her eyes because it looked all sparkly and fab in book 1 thru Olivia's eyes and I found that upsetting to be honest!

Leah is coming to grips with her life and screwed up choices and needs to grow up. Getting to that point is a long long haul for her, that still doesn't really happen here, but it's a helluva ride! The revelations and twists and turns abound of course that keep you screaming at your kindle for more like a crazy person. By the way I LOVED the humor in this book, so many bits dropped in book 1 come up here- Nancy Grace is Olivia's hero, here Leah despises her but watches her when Olivia's name comes up on her show then becomes a big fan...woohoo! And bravo Ms. Fisher, in the space of a page+ she makes a heartstopping reveal about Leah and Seth, Caleb's brother, where Seth comes off as very intriguing and I find myself rooting for these two!!! HOly cow! What's come over me?? This is not a typical romance read. This is the hell of Real Life in all its tough, random bitterness, it makes or breaks you, so will you finally fight for your truth or no!??!! OH! Pass me more Taryncrack and right the F now!!!!! Onto book 3!

Conniving…..devious…..deranged…..all of the phrases that can be used to describe Leah. The one woman that lives her life without boundaries where her adoration for Caleb is concerned, but is also the catalyst that throws the wrench in any type of reconciliation between Olivia and her beau. Nothing is out of bounds where Leah is concerned, because all of the craziness is part of keeping Caleb within her grasp at all costs.

With the determination of an animal hunting its prey, Leah’s reality is a little warped where Olivia and Caleb are concerned. Who wouldn’t expect a gal to hold onto her man? No standard is too low and no mountain too high where obsession is concerned. It’s all part of the ‘game’ and Leah is here to win it. The only question remaining is just how far is Dirty Red willing to go to win the ultimate ‘prize’??

Have you discovered the twisted and tantalizing world around Dirty Red? A twisted view into the warped musings of Leah and her mission to win the guy will leave you desperately turning the pages of this novel like your life depends on it. Leah possesses an unpredictability that adds to the intensity of this tale. Creating a world that few would ‘see’, but as you read you can’t help but feel a part of.

Let me confess just how twisted and satisfying Dirty Red actually was for me as a reader. It was like a fine wine, leaving that little taste in your mouth that leaves you wanting more. With the label of ‘villain’ attached to Leah’s name, some may wonder why even share the POV of a manipulative and calculating woman. What I say is you haven’t even dipped your toes in the water if you skip out on the ‘magic’ that Dirty Red will bring to this connection between Caleb and Olivia. It’s the crazy woman syndrome that everyone has experienced at some point in their live, but one that you can enjoy from a viewpoint that will really get your mind churning about how you see each of the characters involved.

One thing is certain, Dirty Red is undoubtedly one of the most creative additions to such a calculated and twisted story plot. From beginning to end – I soaked up every single nuance that I could possibly enjoy from a character as profound as Red!! If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Dirty Red, I suggest adding it to your collection today!!

To be honest, I didn’t want to read this book… AT ALL. I didn’t want to read about Olivia and Caleb’s story from Leah’s point of view, BUT after reading it, it was SOOO necessary to get things from her perspective. And while I can’t stand her (even more so now), I understand her position… in a slightly neurotic, psychotic, and selfish way. If anything, Leah’s story just made me root even harder for Olivia and Caleb to have their happily ever after… I can not WAIT to read Thief next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love to hate Leah. One crazy ride with this manipulative one
Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2015

After reading The Opportunist, I knew I had to read Dirty Red to get in Leah's head. Would she redeem herself? Was there going to be a part of her that I could relate to? Was there good in her?
"I was about a ten on the poison scale, If he needed venom, I could inject it directly into his neck."
And many of those questions were answered. I didn't think I would like hearing her POV because she just seemed too evil, but I did. She is definitely a messed up character with so much darkness in her. She's twisted and she will do about anything to get what she wants (but haven't we all done that). But does she even really want those things, or is it all just a facade she is trying to keep up? Still don't think I like her or the reasons for her lies. The one time I liked "seeing" her was with Sam the manny. He called her out, but he also seemed to push her out of her comfort zone and understand the darkness in her. Those 2 actually made some sort of sense. Caleb and her? I just don't get. And why would she force something when he repeatedly told her that he was still in love with Olivia. I wanted to scream at her and hit her myself. What could Caleb be thinking?
In the long run, this book and Leah's story needed to be told and to be included in Olivia and Caleb's story. Those 3 (and along with Noah) were a lifetime of love, hate and lies. She made it interesting, but yes, I still kind of hate her. Love to hate Leah.
"Love is illogical. You fall into it like a manhole. Then you're just stuck. You die in love more than you live in love."
I can't wait to see where these lies and love and manipulation will end with these people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant

Tarryn Fisher has ninja writing skills. She is just a perfect wordsmith. Every word measured. Every word astounding.

I hate Leah. My passion for hating her is growing.

I love Caleb and the notion of what Caleb and Olivia could be if Dirty Red hadn't wrecked what could have been.

Dirty Red is told from Leah's POV from the birth of her and Caleb's child. A band aid baby, there to snare him in her catches so he wouldn't try escape again and fix a fractured relationship. But the baby has the opposite effect because Caleb loves the baby more than Leah and jealous Leah is angry Leah.

The story alternates between the past and present, bringing the reader up to date with the powers of manipulation Leah has used to win the man. She is the product of an unloved home. Trying to gain the attention of an unloving father and a cold hearted mother.

Poor, lovely Caleb. Poor, lovely Olivia.

This is a book of pure brilliance. The fact that Tarryn Fisher can make me hate Leah so much is tantamount to her ability to create the most believable characters. I loved The Opportunist because I was smitten with Caleb too, but I loved Dirty Red for the sheer perfection of the flow of the book and the emotions it made me feel.

My favourite Tarryn nuggets of wisdom:

"She was the love in my otherwise loveless life...the warm blanket in a household that valued frigid emotional temperatures."

"No one's ever hooked a man with processed cake crumbs on her face."

"That was the absolute worst thing about love; no matter how hard you tried, you could never forget the person who had your heart."

"Weddings were the frosting for the rest of your life. If the frosting wasn't good, who wanted to stick around for the cupcake."

"I intercepted a look. A look. How long can a look be...truly? A look can be a second long, a freaking, harmless second, and it can tell long, complicated stories. You can see three years in a second-long look. You can see longing, too. I hadn't known that until I saw it for myself. I wish I hadn't seen it. I wish I could never see another look transferred between two people with history."

"Love is illogical. You fall into it like a manhole. Then you're just stuck. You die in love more than you live in love."

5 airport blue stars - and 5 dirty red ones. But oh oh, now she is really, really, really angry.
