5.0 out of 5 starsAn emotional end to the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters series
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2021
Red Skies is the fourth and final book in the Tales of the Scavenger’s Daughters series by Kay Bratt. It is the story of the three people who are brought together in amazing ways and their journey together will forever change them all. Marigold “Mari” grew up knowing struggles and hardships. She struggles to support herself and her husband, Bolin, after he has injured himself and can no longer work. One day, as she returns home on a rainy day, she sees a young girl begging on the street corner. Moved to kindness, she stops to talk to the young girl, An Ni, and offers her her jacket, only to be shooed away from a young man, a gang member. Mari walks away but she never forgets the young girl. Mari soon meets Max, an American photojournalist, who claims to be in China on assignment but seems to have a deeper mission, a personal mission. An Ni finds a way to escape the gang she has been forced to beg for. Along with a young girl, Mei, they run from the gang and hide. Soon Mari and Max will cross paths with An Ni and Mei and they will discover a peace and fulfillment that can only be described as miraculous.
Red Skies is a beautiful ending to an amazing series. I loved the character of Mari as she struggles to support her husband, who is in pain and depressed. Her determination and drive to keep going, to love and honor her husband and survive on her own.I enjoyed Max as he was a bit of a mystery, wanting to see places that weren’t on the usual tourist list. It was easy to see that Max was a man tortured by something but what?, we don’t find out until the end. It was a beautiful moment which had me in tears. The convergence of An Ni and Mei’s story with Mari and Max’s is an example of how our paths are connected by no effort of ours but by divine providence or supernatural guidance. Ms. Bratt’s descriptions of China and the Chinese culture are beautiful and detailed. I could easily imagine the sights and sounds of the city, its marketplace and its residents. Red Skies is a beautifully, emotional story to end a great series. I was sad to say goodbye to Benfu, Calli and their amazing daughters but they will forever live and thrive in my imagination.I highly recommend Red Skies.

Not thrilled about the ending. For all the prelude the ending was 2 pages if that. No epilogue as how the characters moved forward ,etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding!

I’m an old retired soldier, and while a few romances might have snuck into my reading list, I tend to read the more testosterone-laden genres such as military fiction, action-adventure, detective, scifi, and shapeshifting. As it is not what I would normally read, I am not sure what made me purchase Red Skies. It was probably a combination of the great reviews and the setting being Beijing (I speak some Chinese and am familiar with the culture). Whatever the reason, I am so happy I bought the book. Rarely have I read anything so moving, so engrossing. I read the second half of the book in one sitting, swearing that I would read “only one more chapter,” but going on until after 3:00 AM. I read it in bed, and as I lay next to my sleeping wife, this old soldier cried as I finished the book. Like a baby. Tears rolling down my face.

What made this book special is that I cared for each and every character in it. I kept thinking about ways I could reach into the book to help them, not just little An Li and Xiao Mei, but Mari, Max, and Bolin. I wanted to “rescue” the boys who were in An Li’s gang. I wanted to do something!

Characterization was superb. Each character was different and had his or her own voice. We weren’t told that An Li was suspicious or that Max was lonely; we were shown it. And the characters were not static. Over the course of the book, they developed. Xiao Mei’s development was gratifying and fun to observe.

The setting for the story was wonderfully described. It was accurate, but not the dry travelogue-type descriptions to which some authors revert. The author’s descriptive abilities were just as good as her characterizations.

The storyline could have become sappy, and I dare say that with most other authors, it would have become a soap opera. This didn’t happen here. While I cried more than once, while my throat tightened as I got choked up, the book did not go over the top. It remained real and believable.

I lay awake for an additional hour after finishing the book, thinking about it and why it affected me so much. It wasn’t as if the book surprised me. It basically proceeded as I had foreseen. But what the author was able to do was to draw me in, to make me part of the story. This is superb wordsmithing and storytelling, and if this book is any indication, these are skills that the author has that surpass the vast majority of other authors’ out there.

I have given out a fair number of five stars for reviews I have written for Amazon. Giving five stars for Red Skies doesn’t seem enough. I would love to be able to add another to show that this truly is at the top of the heap. Of all the books I have reviewed here, this is one of the top two. It is an astounding and outstanding book, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to disappear into its pages. This book is going to stick with me for a long, long time.

Definitely not my favorite book in the series.

I liked getting to know Mari better. Even though she in a few of the previous books, the reader really gets to know her in this book; her story had me in tears. Max is a great addition to the story, just enough mystery to keep me guessing. Benfu and Callie make an appearance but the rest of the daughters are mentioned only in passing if at all. An Ni and Mei are the heart of the story, and their journey was terrifying.

I had a hard time with this book. I don’t feel like there is enough closure to the story and it didn’t seem as realistic as the previous books in the series.

Life in Beijing can be hard, and more so when your husband has turned into an addict on pain-killers following a back injury, forcing Mari to make ends meet by taking photographs of tourists on a mangy camel at the Great Wall. Things start looking up a little when an American photojournalist hires her to be his translator and bring him to a few local sites on what seems like his China bucket list. But a tragedy occurs which threatens her happily-ever-after.

We're also introduced to 2 young girls who were kidnapped by an adult syndicate who force them to beg on the streets to avoid being beaten and starved. They are often bullied by the older boys or worse. Their lives take a toll for the worse when the older girl, An Ni, breaks her leg during an escape during a risky train heist. It's left to little Xiao Mei to find help, which comes from an unexpected meeting. The Chinese government's disinterest in the known situation of child kidnappings takes an abrupt 360 when certain photographs and a story published by a foreign journal goes viral.

The children's resilience are admirable as is the determination of one man facing his own demons to make a difference.

I read to relax and get away. I first found Kay Bratt when I read her by the sea series and fell in love with her writing and her ability to take me away and make me want to go to the places she described and find my own adventure there. I have now read the whole scavenger’s daughter series and not only was I entertained but I fell in love with the characters and the place (China) and feel like I’m doing so I even learned something. Her writing and her own story are inspiring and I can’t wait to see where the next book takes me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Felt I was there

I loved reading this book, as I have with all of Kay Bratt's books set in China. I recently discovered this author when I bought her books as a bundle from Amazon. I've read each one, back to back (although I'm not positive in the right order), and eagerly pushed through to the end. It's not the most sophisticated writing, but it's a heckuva good read and that's better in my book. The characters jump off the page and I did feel I was there. After reading a number of these in the series, I feel like I can see the setting in China. I know movies are never as good as the books, and perhaps I am better just to imagine it, but I would love to see these as movies. Maybe Kay will get into scriptwriting? Anyway, strong recommendation from me.

Again Kay Bratt has hit it out of the park with this continuing story of Benfu and Calli and their daughters. This has been an amazing journey as the lives of these girls are changed by living caring people who become their real family. I strongly recommend reading these books in order. I have now begun the final book in the series The Palest Ink which is the prequel. Very interesting Learning the background. I think this book is well placed as the final one.

I love meeting more of the Scavenger’s Daughters. This book brought in more of the plights of Chinese girls, beyond the “one-child” law. The street kids were very real; it reminded me of the beggars we saw in Munich — their plight as victims of street gangs.

Now off to see what Kay Bratt book I’ll read next ;-)

Compelling story about the lives of street children in Beijing, China. When a young woman sees a young girl on the street begging and fearfully responding to an older street gang member, she is reminded of a earlier period in her life when she was caught in similar circumstances. Now married and caring for an ailing husband, she is filled with compassion but does not know what she can do to help. The story follow ts this woman's life and struggle to care for her young, disabled husband. She is befriended by am American photo journalist who is grieving the loss of his adopted Chinese daughter. This is a touching story of friendship, loss, grief and resilience with enlightening insights into Chinese culture. The book is one of several Scavenger's Daughter books but the story stands alone. Good, descriptive and interesting writing and storytelling.

This was a surprisingly beautiful story about love, tragedy, and desperation. Very well written and powerful. Being disappointed in book three of The Scavengers Daughter, this one turned it around for me. Definitely a chick book with a tearful happy ending.
