David H. Eisenberg
4.0 out of 5 starsAnother light plunge into espionage, murder and mayhem
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2020
A few years ago I found a late author by the name of Helen MacInnes, who began writing in the 1940s during the war. Really enjoyed her books (except, as often happens, the one where she tried to break out of her normal) and read them all. It was all about, as Wignall's books are, spies, killers and the like. She had a formula which, like many other successful writers, she used over and over again, but each different enough, so that you enjoyed them one by one and looked forward to the next. I don't know if this is what most authors want to do, but it is apparently what the publishers and the public wants. Me too, I guess, for the most part. That's why series, where it is the same hero each time, are so popular.

I have now read four of Wignall's books. One was a little different, a takeoff on I Know What You Did Last Summer, which he acknowledges in the book. That (Among the Dead) was a really good book too, although with a vague ending that left me unsatisfied. But the other three were all part of a formula that he does very well, and which formula it seems he uses in most if not all his other books. And, the Hunters Prayer, was probably the best of them so far for me. It's important to me that I like the protagonist, although I can appreciate a good anti-hero too, as long as not too dark or too edgy. And, although I admire the prowess of those who write about guns or some other technical thing, say, Stephen Hunter, I am often relieved when an author just calls a gun a gun and leaves it at that. Guns don't fascinate me except as a plot device like any other.

And there are some other things I appreciate about Wignall. It is a different hero each time, even if similar. He doesn't really write Reacher books, which is what I call all of those books I read and so often enjoy, where the hero is a virtual superhero, the best shot, the best fighter, and able to seduce beautiful young women within a unrealistically short time, even if they are otherwise virginal. Don't mistake me, Wignall's heroes are very good at their job, or it wouldn't be exciting and do improbable things too, just not to the same level as a Reacher or James Bond (both characters I love). I guess it's just refreshing for characters to have some humility or uncertainty, even if we know where it's heading.

In any event, I suspect I will gobble up every one of his novels rather quickly, as so far he hasn't failed me. Some people apparently give five stars to any book they liked a lot and maybe that's we are supposed to do. I reserve five stars for books like The Lord of the Rings, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, you know, classics, or something really different or outstanding, for the most part (I have violated my own rule at least once), because I feel there should be a distinction between really good and great (Amazon should use a ten star system). So, this could be a five for someone else.

The book started out with a jolt, moving on to develop the characters. That's when it began it's slide towards mediocrity. Luke was downright boring. I would imagine violins playing in my imagination as his character was developed.

Ella was interesting in the beginning but in the middle of the story her personality did a 180. She became detestable, killing innocent people, Including children.

The only enjoyable character came at the end of the story with the introduction of Dan Borowski.

For me, I wish I hadn't plowed through it. There will never be enough time to read all of the good books we have to choose from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected ending, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading THE HUNTER'S PRAYER.
Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2019

THE HUNTER’S PRAYER is the fifth novel by Kevin Wignall that I’ve read. The other five are A DEATH IN SWEDEN; THE TRAITOR’S STORY; A FRAGILE THING; and TO DIE IN VIENNA. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all five novels. When I first started reading them, I was worried that they’d be a “formula” mass market type mystery suspense novel (i.e., basically the same story told slightly different). This was not the case. Each of the novels was unique and different; but they are the same in that setting is in Europe, lots of people die, and each novel has a strong male character.

I thought THE HUNTER’S PRAYER was slightly better than the other four novels. The ending was completely different than I expected. It was so different that I had to re-read the last few pages to make sure that I read what I had read.

THE HUNTER’S PRAYER is a novel that I would consider re-reading again in 10+ years. That to me is a sign that the book is worthy of five stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Killing to live; Living to kill

Based on this book, the hunter`s prayer is to wipe people out, as in kill them The novel features a professional "hunter," one who kills for money. He is hired to protect a young college girl whose life is in danger and becomes one of devastation with the murder of herr family, resulting in he new ,life becoming a quest for revenge.

The plot becomes an inverse relationship between the professional killer who seeks redemption and the young girl whose normal life becomes one of obsession for bloody revenge,This is a twisted tale in which a stunning number of people incur violent deaths. Behind and between the killings, a few characters are introduced and developed, but in the end it is a tale of sound and fury signifying little. Its possibly redeeming value is that it is an "entertaining" story for those who like their mysteries bloody

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a prayer.

While this is not my first book by this author, suffice to say that the prior book encouraged me to buy The Hunter's Prayer.
I am sad to say that this book was not worth reading and was a disappointment on all levels.
The story has no provocateur. It has no characters with anything resembling a moral compass worth reading about. It had no mystery and nothing that anyone did not figure out. It had no reason to be.
It contains horrible gratuitous violence and the only victims worth that title are the minor children.
It may be a very long time before I try this author again. If I want this sort of unexplainable depravity, I can watch the evening news.
But it isn't all his fault. He has agents, editors, pre-readers, publishers and maybe more people involved in assisting him make a book that fits the marketing parameters. It must be that none of them had the courage or the talent to see he was creating the example of 'how not to' write a mystery/action/thriller

2.0 out of 5 stars Implausible, even for this genre

This a story about revenge, at first focused against people who did something very bad. Yet, when you are about 2/3 of the way through the book, you are expected to believe that one of the main characters is now so far off her rocker that she would do something equally bad, harming innocent people. After that, the story leads readers through a train wreck of violence. The one good thing I can say about the last part of the book is that the very end of the story provides the only possible solution, given the prior events.

I read this fast as I saw how it was going. Nothing much to redeem this book. I have enjoyed a few of this authors works in the past but will be on my guard in future. I read a lot of espionage and expected this to be at least partially espionage. Nope. But that's OK. But really. This plot has such a dark ambiance that I just finished it and moved on. I have one more Kindle book by this author to finish and then I will have to be more thorough in my investigating of the reviews. So many good reviews that are suspicious on AMAZON anyway. Usually I do not give negative reviews but this book needs a warning label.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting plot, some good suspense and action

I found the start of this story to be action filled and a page turner...worthy of making it onto a film label some day. The development of the Lucas hit man character was also very interesting, and flowing through into his relationship with Ella, was great! It is a pity that he wasnt somehow entwined into the end of the story. I am still not sure how the book’s title has anything to do with the story itself? The dark corridor of revenge, which Ella chooses to take does naturally lead to the conclusion at the end...I did feel though that there was some narrative or depth lacking to make it a great story for me to give it five stars...otherwise, I enjoyed the read!

Glad I only read a few reviews before I read this book .I enjoyed it. It wasn't my favorite Wignall book, but I did appreciate how he handled most of the characters .I did want to keep turning the pages. I went back and read all of the reviews to this date. The reviews have made me aware of how easy it is to spoil the book, for those who haven't read it yet. I'm going to be more careful in the future to reread my review before I submit it. If I wouldn't want to have this information before I read the book, I'm writing Spoiler Alert in the title of my review.

How disappointing... a really gripping and riveting first 40 pages or so, then... deadness. Once they arrive in Switzerland the book is basically over. I nearly gave up reading several times, I kept expecting excitement to return, but it never did. The coldness of Ella, the still undeveloped ending explaining why things happened the way they did simply never occurred. I'm not sure it even rates 3 stars. I'm being generous because the beginning was so strong. But how did this get so many 4 and 5 stars?
