5.0 out of 5 starsHeroes Tale! Great story of wartime courage
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on November 5, 2022
Though I am a WWII history buff, I knew nothing of the war's history & impact in the Scandinavian countries. This well-written personal story served as a great tribute to those who had the bravery to push back against the dreaded Fascist Occupation. Full of detail and personal insight. Well worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 starsShocking Story, Lack-Luster Book
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on December 5, 2019
How I found this book:
My English teacher assigned a book club project on a nonfiction book. Funnily enough, I looked up nonfiction books on Amazon and this was the first result. Wanting to get a headstart on reading, begged my friends to choose this book because it looked interesting and was recommended. When they agreed, I swiftly pressed order.
Overall outlook on the book:
The book was about an interesting group of boys who challenged Hitler during his occupation of Denmark, their home. The actions they did were interesting and humorous, like switching Nazi signs so they would get lost traveling. The content of the book was fascinating, but the presentation of it was not. I enjoyed the pictures that gave context and the quotes from Knud about his experience, but the other parts of the book read like a textbook. They lacked the surprise of a fiction book.
Recommendation on the book:
This book is in the Young Adult genre which is appropriate because of the age of the Churchill Club members, but the book can seem dull for this age group. I would recommend this book to someone who is very interested in World War II or likes nonfiction books. I prefer fiction, perhaps that is why this book just did not hit the mark for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book the whole family will enjoy!

This book offered great insight into WWII for my 10 and 12 yr old kids. For the history buff this book will be, as another reviewer put it, โ€œsimplistic,โ€ however, we read it out loud every evening and never wanted to put it down. It is a great introduction to Nazi Germany for the young reader not quite of age to grasp the horrors of the Holocaust since one of the boys is Jewish and this author touches on his struggles. Actual photos and portions written by the actual Churchhill club members brought this book to life. I would highly recommend this book as it is exciting, inspiring and educational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Educational

I bought this book to add to the Little Free Library we have nearby. Intent was to offer something to read for middle school students that would be educational and inspirational. Not personally being in the target reading group, I can only try to remember what I found interesting and inspiring at that age. Yes, I think it meets both those objectives. With lots of photos and diagrams and a brisk pace, it provides sufficient detail to be understandable and engaging without becoming bogged down with details that a younger reader might find superfluous. There are many boys mentioned in the book and it is a bit difficult to remember who is who as the story progresses. In part this is because of the unfamiliar Danish names. The shift from narration to first-person accounts of the events throughout the book adds to the authenticity, but may also make it a bit more confusing for younger readers not familiar with this style of historical accounts. Bottom line: a worthwhile read, but might take a bit of extra concentration to fully understand the entire story.

The Boys Who Challenged Hitler is an amazing story about a group of boys who took a stand for their country against a world power. The book takes you back to the 1940's when the Nazis under Adolf Hitler conquer Denmark, although not in a bad way. Unlike its neighbor, Norway, Denmark partnered with the German army. While Norway lost hundreds of casualties every day, people in Denmark were trading and having conversations with the Germans in town of Aalborg. However, Knud Peterson of the Churchill Club did not feel the same. He decided to start a club that would later spark a flame in Denmark by sabatoging the German occupation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rude awakening

I'm a second generation American and Half Dane from my mother's side. My grandfather was from Nibe as well as my grandmother. On my father's side I am German. I was born in 1933 and too young to be aware of the surrender of the Danes to the occupation of Denmark. My family was silent in the years that followed, so when I chose to read this book, I was shocked to learn of the Danish attitude regarding the Nazis.
I have great admiration for the young men and women with the courage it took to stand up to their countrymen and try to make a difference. It is this kind of heroism that makes me proud of my heritage.
I found this book to be very enlightening and an easy read.

Like many others I too have purchased innumerable books online. And must say that skymom retailers outshone in their service. The book arrived so well packaged and quality is the same as was described. One can easily see that they take care in what they commit. I am impressed!! Good luck skymom ๐Ÿ‘
