5.0 out of 5 starsAdventures with Ceony
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018
Ceony is preparing for her test to become a Magician, but it’s decided that Emery can’t work with her or test her because it might be considered favoritism. Instead, she’s sent to the home of Mg. Bailey, whose apprentice is Bennet, a friend of Ceony’s. Bailey is the opposite of Emery Thane, demanding, sour and utterly difficult. He also disparages Emery every chance he gets due to a grudge he has, until Ceony sets him straight. But Bailey is the least of her worries, as Prendi, the Excisioner, has escaped while being transferred to another prison. Ceony is determined as ever to resolve all of these challenges. Ceony is… Ceony, only an even stronger and more skillful version of herself.

3.0 out of 5 starsToo many plots lines for a short book
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2017
Charlie Holmberg’s Paper Magician series has a lot going for it. The magic system is great: magicians have to bond to a specific manmade material, and can then perform spells only by manipulating that material. I also like the early-twentieth-century-England setting. And the characters are strong: Ceony Twill, the protagonist, is distinct and likable, as is Emery Thane, her love interest and mentor in the art of Folding paper.

But I’m mixed about the books' lengths. They all run about 220 pages, and while that makes for quick reads and accelerated pacing, sometimes the stories feel underdeveloped.

The Master Magician, Holmberg’s third entry in the series, is the guiltiest of this, probably because there are multiple plotlines. Ceony, now nearly done with her apprenticeship to Thane, toggles between preparing for her final Folding test and hunting a villain she thought she’d bested in the second book, The Glass Magician. Either one of these could have made a good tale on its own. But combined, they come off a bit rushed, especially the callback to the old foe. Sometimes subplots dilute a story more than they intensify it.

I’m also not sure I like how powerful Ceony is becoming. Part of the charm of the first book was how she went from being skeptical of a Folder’s ability to do anything useful to being proud of working spells with paper. In The Glass Magician, though, Ceony learned how to bond to other materials. And in The Master Magician, she’s slinging fireballs and teleporting through mirrors. How long until paper is just an afterthought?

Don’t get me wrong—I picked up The Master Magician because I wanted something fast and fun, and Holmberg delivered on both counts. If you’re looking for a bite-sized diversion, The Paper Magician series is worth a try.

Just don’t be surprised if it feels a few hundred pages too short.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother.

I loved the first two books in this series and was super excited to read this book. I was soooo disappointed. Ceony has not grown as a character at all. Literally everything that goes wrong is her fault. It is like reading Twilight. The series showed so much promise in the first book and then quickly went down hill in the following books. I've already decided I won't be continuing the series and I don't know if I will bother reading other books by this author. I feel like she does a great job painting a picture of the world in which her stories take place but then doesn't develop her characters. I feel like based on the first two books, there are several ways the author could have set up for Saraj to go after Ceony, but for some reason, she makes Ceony make horrible, shortsighted, selfish decisions that sets the chain of motion in place so that she can force a confrontation between Ceony and Saraj.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite a Good Read!

This series as a whole is fantastic. Carlie N Holmberg has set herself up to develop this series if she chooses to...You'll see what I mean. These books are really an enjoyable read! I think what I enjoyed most about these books (with out giving too much away) is the simplicity of the love story. The story is really about the journey and obstacles that Ceony has to overcome, her love story compliments the journey, and doesn't over power the books (aside from the first book, but I still think the comment rings true.) There is no *major drama between the two and it is quite refreshing for two characters to just accept and adapt to the humanity and flaws of each other so easily. I will say that there were a couple instances where I thought the book should have gone in a different direction, some things are left unexplained or undeveloped...but continuing the series would solve that.

5.0 out of 5 stars problems ahead

I loved the first book and the second so I naturally got this book along the other two and the fourth (The
Plastic Magician). I do like the pacing and feel of the world, but with the two year time skip, Ceony still
goes out on her own, older and yet not necessarily wiser. However, that being said, she does stand up for
herself and tries to think things through even after making a bad decision. I wish more had been done
about Ceony's ability to change into multiple forms of magician easily. Is she the only one? Or has it
been done before and outlawed? There are some surprises ahead and most things are wrapped up.
Must read for fantasy lovers. Now, onto the Plastic Magician!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Word Magician

Another masterful edition of The Paper Magician by an author who is able to weave spells with words. Perhaps she should be called, "The Word Magician." I think Holmberg had a proposal on a flowering hillside by a plum tree in mind when she started this one. Don't we wish all proposals were as magical as this one? (I want to go back and do mine over!) It is a brilliant story not soon forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Left Feeling Unfinished...
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2017

This completes the series from "Paper," Glass, to Master..." While I don't feel it's the best finish to the series~ for our heroine, it is a finish. We re-visit some of the same characters, and we even get the chance to see how time changed for them... Especially, from "students" to "adults."

However, like so many, here, I feel it is the weakest of the three books. It leaves this uneven feeling [that] further demonstrates our heroines attempt to use paper, glass, metal [as three of the many forms of magic] and not becoming strongest from her our first reading [in the earliest book] in her manipulation of paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it, and make sure to read all three together.

Quite a good end to the trilogy. As another reviewer pointed out, this series is best taken as one long book. In fact popping my iPad open on the promised delivery date, I started in on this episode and stopped. Then started over and stopped again. The third time, I went back to book 1 and read the three straight through back to back to back. Much better. It's a wonderful story, and I will never look at a scrapbooker the same way again. The story is quirky, as are the characters, as they should be. There is romance without getting sappy, action without (too much) gore, it's not your fault I have a vivid imagination. I wanted a cat version of Fennel from the very first paragraph.
One question for the author, should she happen upon this, why no cloth magic? I could see much potential in both offensive and defensive uses. Not to mention being able to fix one's yarn when the cat has taken advantage of one being engrossed in a book.

Ok, call me a hopeless romantic. This was a nice end to a good series. It's no spoiler that it worked out since it was forecast in the fortuity box. And Charlie did no evil with an unforeseen twist. Some might call this too plain. And I love a book/series that weaves a complex tapestry that always leaves you guessing. This isn't it. But it was a pleasure to read, solid, entertained, presented novel magic, and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this series

Loved this series. Pre=ordered the last book because I simply couldn't wait to finish it. I am letting my 14 yr old read it. We don't do much magic or myth stuff (vampire series definitely a no-no in this house) But this has a level of magic that is neat not cultish. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and grieved with them when suspicions, death and pain followed their lives. I really appreciate the level of intrigue. You know she will end up with happily ever after, but seriously while reading, I was still rooting for the good side to win. I loved it and became emotionally involved with some hero-worthy characters. Delightful in her descriptions. I SO wish this was real. What a wondrous world to live in. Enjoy!
