Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 27, 2015
Although I got started on romances pretty late in my reading life (I was already looking forward to Medicare when I got hooked!), I have read some good ones, with many of them being from our local authors. I think the 1st one I read was actually back in late 2011, when I read Past Midnight, by Jasmine Haynes. And that was not just a plain old romance; it was an erotic romance, which I had definitely not read before (I came across Jasmine and Shelley Bates signing their books at Barnes & Noble in the Pruneyard). Well, you may remember that I really enjoyed the love story (I swear I'm telling the truth!). In fact, here is what I wrote at the end of my review:

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I have been with my wife now for over 45 years. She is the most beautiful, smartest, talented person that I know. And, yet, I feel that I have not spent enough time showing her how great I think she is. Jasmine Haynes' book has made me more aware of letting my wife know what I feel. For that, I say a personal "Thank you."

So there. Now, along comes book 1 of a romance series featuring the Maverick Billionaires. Bella Andre and Jennifer Skully (aka Jasmine Haynes) have collaborated for the 1st time to bring us a series about 5 mid-30s men who have been friends since grade school. They mostly came from poor, rough childhoods and have made themselves into...well...billionaires. This 1st book is about Will Franconi, who has become rich by selling luxury goods for luxury prices. Almost by chance, Will meets Jeremy Newman, an 18-year old boy who had a very serious car accident when he was 7 and has never matured mentally past that age. And then there's Jeremy's older sister, Harper, who, in her late 20's, has already been taking care of Jeremy on her own for 6 years, since their parents were tragically killed in an accident.

You know, I've said many times that it's okay with me that we know up front the girl will get the guy, and vice versa. But even knowing that, I still appreciate a book that keeps me guessing, at least a little bit. And this book absolutely does that.

I really have a lot to say about Breathless in Love, but I don't want to lose you 1/2 or 2/3 of the way through. So I will try to be concise (yeah, right) with my analysis. Let me start by saying I just loved this book. I loved all of the relationships: Will with Jeremy, Will with Harper, Harper with Jeremy, Will with his 4 Maverick buddies, Will with his mom, Susan. Every connection felt real to me, and I truly connected with the 3 main characters. Maybe a little too much, if you catch my tear-soaked drift.

Speaking of crying, wow, did I cry a lot. There were the obvious tearfests - when Will treated Jeremy like a brother; when will did NOT treat Harper like a sister; when Harper and Jeremy were together. But here's the thing: There were a bunch of very poignant moments that were not just about the main characters. There were tons of scenes when Will showed kindness to people far below him on the food chain. There's one time in particular in a porcelain factory in London between Will and 5 factory workers that was one of the highlights of the entire book for me. Oh, yeah, I cried.

But this leads me to the most important message that I got out of this book. There's a reason I posted a quote from an earlier review. Just like I learned a valuable lesson from Past Midnight, so did I learn a valuable lesson from Breathless in Love: Just be nice to people. I try to do that, whether I'm with friends or as a customer in a retail situation. But you know what? I (and all of us) can do better. Treat everybody with the same respect that you expect from them. Money and status don't make one person better than the other. In fact, I just saw this on Facebook the other day (and had to share it) - Be the person your dog thinks you are. Does that sum it up or what? So, Bella and Jennifer, thank you for teaching me that lesson.

I'm going to stop here - for now (evidently I just couldn't be concise enough!). But I will be doing part 2 of this post in the next few days. Don't worry, it will be shorter. But I still have more to say. And you don't want to stifle my creative literary juices, do you? (Do you? It's not a rhetorical question.) Stay tuned.

2.0 out of 5 starsRepetitive romance where former gang member meets a sweet girl
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 19, 2019
I'd rate this 2.5 stars. This was an easy, predictable read that had a bit too much unnecessary angst and was very repetitive. I'll also start off by saying that I noticed one of the reviews said it ended in a cliffhanger. I'm not sure what they're talking about, but the version I received was a complete story (I purchased it at the end of last year) and Will and Harper's story ended happily. It did lead up to the next book's plot in the epilogue and included a couple of excerpts from other books (very brief), but it was definitely a completed story.

Will is a billionaire (aren't they all these days...) whose business focusses on obtaining high-end items for the rich and selling them for a profit. He and his group of friends from back in the neighbourhood of his teenage years are all...you guessed it...billionaires and I'm assuming each book has one of the Mavericks as the star. They all have their backstories and each of them lived with the parents of one of the group so they're brothers. Yep. One of Will's passions is fast cars and when he receives a letter from Jeremy, who he thinks is a boy, gushing about how much he loves his cars, Will agrees to show him his track and the whole shebang. Jeremy is actually an intellectually impaired teenager who is accompanied by his older sister and guardian, Harper, and Will is instantly smitten.

The storyline isn't particularly unique but it's a plot that works and the premise of this book was solid enough. What didn't work for me, however, was the excessive amount of repetition and constant back and forth of feelings. They wanted each other, but couldn't get past their ridiculous hang ups from the past. And I say ridiculous because they travelled well into Silly Town, population Will and Harper. Will was constantly referring to his dark and unspeakable past so by the time the authors got around to telling the reader what had happened, it was not only a let down but I didn't really care. He was forced into a car gang by his father and the authors try to convince us he was the big bad. Unfortunately, due to the repetitive inner monologue of Will and how he's tried to make up for it, his past wasn't enough to convince me that his former sins were unforgivable and therefore his stance throughout the book that he wasn't good enough for Harper and that she'd see how terrible he was just didn't stand up.

As for Harper, she had an equally ridiculous reason to mess things up with Will, namely that her brother was struck by a reckless driver and his rich father paid off her parents who needed the money to care for Jeremy. It left her bitter and when her parents died, she became the sole caregiver of her brother, dating infrequently and distrusting those with money. Sigh. Jeremy was a sweet character, but even he wasn't enough to distract from the authors' attempt to sell Harper's martyrdom. She was a kind character but her constant harping on about Jeremy and worrying about everything combined with her efforts to self-sabotage her relationship with Will got old pretty quickly. Overall, I found Will and Harper's trust issues to be non-issues that just made me feel like I'd read the same thing over and over even though they were mostly likeable. A few chapters in and I was already rolling my eyes and thinking 'Give it a rest'. Towards the end they have a blow up over something out of both of their control, Harper gets up on a pedestal and both self-flagellates and blames Will and you can guess pretty much everything else.

There were quite a few steamy scenes, but I found the dirty talk cliche. Will and Harper's relationship was pretty sweet for the most part, although some sections were over the top. The details about Will's cars were good and the writing was grammatically correct. The other Mavericks didn't feature heavily but just enough to introduce us to them and hint at what their deal was for future books.

While I didn't hate the book, I didn't love it either. If there was less repetition, it would probably be a three star read for me, but I had to start skimming parts to get through it. I gave the book an extra half star because it was free.

After Jeremy was brain damaged in a crash with a rich spoilt drunk teenager at the age of 7, and their parents killed 5 years later, his older sister took over the role of protecting him. There was no time to be a young woman with that responsibility. Yet strangely, her brother brought about a very interesting development. A lovely story, despite some wrong choices and big worries.

This was a good way to start the series of the Mavericks. Five brothers, who are not blood, but closer to each other because at a young age they were raised together. Now they are grown men and what men they are. This book featured Will and Harper and her brother Jeramy. Jeramy was disabled when he was 7 yo and never grew past that. Harper does not want to let anyone in for fear of Jeramy getting hurt. But Will can’t get her out of his head and will do anything to have her and Jeramy in his life. Each of these characters are well thought out and each strong. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a little romance with a HEA. I can’t wait to start the next book, to learn more of each of the 5 brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to this new series!

What a great new series by Bella Andre and Jennifer Skully! I loved the idea of Billionaires in Love as soon as they announced this series and the first book is a winner for sure.

Will Franconi had a rough start to life and because of it, his past has always remained a tightly guarded secret. He and his group of friends, called The Mavericks, along with his foster parents, are all the family that Will has ever needed. That and making something of himself by becoming a wealthy man where everything is going his way. Or so he thought until he receives a letter from a teenaged boy who puts him on the path to meeting the boy and his sister.

After losing her parents to a car accident several years ago, Harper Newman is the guardian of her teenaged brother who was also in an accident when he was seven and depends on her for everything. She has vowed never to let him be hurt again. Harper has made the decision to close herself off to love after the men she has dated previously have only wanted to get close to her due to what she could do for them monetarily...it was never about her.

When Will and Harper meet due to the letter that her brother sent to Will, sparks fly immediately, however neither one of them wants to admit it. They both have their own hang-ups regarding why they shouldn't get involved, but they both realize early on that it's inevitable they are going to eventually come together. As Will builds a relationship with Harper's brother, Jeremy, she sees her brother blossoming like he never has before. Will genuinely cares, which is a new thing for Harper to experience. Can these two people that have demons in their pasts be able to get past them and give the magnetic pull they are feeling a chance? Will they trust one another enough to open up?

Kudos to Bella Andre and Jennifer Skully for crafting a story where both the hero and the heroine learn some tough lessons about themselves throughout the course of the book. You could see both of them growing as the story went on because the other person was bringing things to the forefront that they had not realized. I really enjoyed the characters and I'm looking forward to the books of the other Mavericks still to come!

A good story that pulled me. I liked how it dealt with misconceptions, bullies, and how some people change. My main go to is romantic suspense so this was a change in pace but enjoyable ...and now I need to know what happens with the rest of the Mavericks so I'll definitely be continuing the series eventually. Narrator did a decent job as well.

I have never enjoyed the billionaire genre until now. I am Breathlessly in love with Will Franconi. He wasn't born with a silver spoon. He earned it his gold after he and the Mavericks fought their way out Chicago . Will was not a happy person. Will knew something was missing in his life. He just didn't know what it was until a little boy wrote him a letter. He thought Jeremy was around seven when he asked to see his cars. Jeremy was a way to make amends for his past, to fill avoid. He just didn't know it Jeremy was hit by a car, leaving him forever seven. Jeremy's perpetual happiness is infectious. Will's treatment and respect for Jeremy is infectious. We can all learn something from the way Will handles and respects Jeremy. It left my heart a flutter. Kudos to the authors for presenting the issue with such class. Harper is Jeremy's sister and guardian. She is protective and devoted to her brother. Men have not treated her well. Men have not been kind to Jeremy. And now, for the first time in Will's live he wants someone. Will has his work cut out. How does he convince Harper he isn't going to disappear on Jeremy? How does he convince Harper that he will protect Jeremy? How does he convince Harper that her heart is safe with him? How does he accept his past so he can really love?
