Superb ending to this arc

<no spoilers> The Batman\Joker 'Endgame' storyline that has been building over the space of the past few issues culminates in the 7th New 52 Batman trade. After a less-than stellar series of sidestips in Vol.6, Vol.7 showcases Batman at his best. Scott Snyder has put together a nail-biter of a conclusion, bringing in the Court of Owls, along with a coterie of Batman's long-term adversaries, and throwing them into the mix of a Gotham driven to the brink of destruction (again) by The Joker's virus. It would be unfair to discuss how it all plays out, but things come to a head in a grand finale that will dramatically affect the Batman line for quite a few issues to come. Highly recommended.

I devoured most of the 52 Run and had such high hopes for this volume. After the Death of the Family, this story is just ok. Pacing is kinda off putting, build up does not pay off, and seems directionless at times. Its a fun read, but just needed better direction to ground it and have it as worthy follow-up to Death of the Family.

Epic and Unsettling - The Best of New 52 Batman

This is arguably the climax and pinnacle of Snyder's writing on the New 52 Batman. If the Joker in Death of the Family was an obsessive, loving fan of Batman, this Joker is more of a vindictive, jilted lover out to demolish the Bat and everything he stands for. This arc contains some of the most intense action scenes in the run as Batman faces off against a Jokerized city and Justice League, introduces intriguing theories about the Joker (and his possible origins), and adds mythology about the sources of immortality in the DC universe (including for characters in and out of the Batman canon). My only complaint is that this felt like such a fitting end to the run, and was just so perfect, that I wish they didn't continue on after it--and in my head I sometimes just pretend that the Snyder run ends here. If only....Definitely required for any Batman fan's collection!

Read Batman Eternal and Arkham Manor before reading this one. It adds a much needed build before you get to Endgame. This is a great book, as most Joker stories are. I do think "Death of the Family" (Batman Vol 3) was a much more intense and psychologically unsettling Joker tale, but Endgame is great in terms of a bigger picture and how it affects all of Gotham. Snyder sure has destroyed or terrorized that poor city a bunch in this Batman series. Another great book in an incredible Batman line. Snyder and Capullo have done great work.

A Love Letter about Batman and the Joker

Batman: Endgame features the return of Batman's greatest foe, the Joker, in a fight that will shake the core of the Batman universe. Scott Snyder and Capullo are on top of things as they hit the ground running with an attack on Batman. Batman begins to put the pieces together and comes to the realization that the Joker has been right under his nose the whole time and he was blind. Gotham spirals into chaos as Batman must stop the Joker and his new found "immortality", but the Clown Prince of Crime has only one goal in mind, it isn't to love or make Batman better as he claimed in Death of the Family, it is to utterly destroy him for rejecting his help. Batman's closest allies are threatened as he must face the Joker one last time. Snyder's writing is still sublime, it's as if he never has a bad day writing Batman. Capullo and the art team are still knocking it out of the park with colors and artwork. Snyder appears to throw a curveball at the reader when he addresses a "new origin" of sorts for the Joker, but in issue 40 collected in this volume it doesn't turn out to be so. Which is one of the things that sometimes I don't like about Snyder's story telling. He will tease something that we kind of know isn't true and then just reveal that of course it wasn't true. But to be fair it serves his purpose as a story teller to make a larger point. The Joker's design in this arc is the same design that influenced Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad. No offense to people who like that movie, but it wasn't translated well over to film. But I do like how Capullo draws him and how Snyder depicts him, almost like a corpse, gone are the purples and wild colors normally associated with the Joker, it's black as if he is dressed for a funeral. Another thing that I like is that the book is solely written and drawn by Snyder and Capullo, so no other confusing and jarring changes of writers or artists anywhere in the bookOverall it was a great read and I could see if Snyder and Capullo would have intended for this one to be their last story arc. But they still had one more story to tell. It's not as good as Death of the Family or Zero Year, but it's still a good and arguably iconic Batman story and a nice love letter to Batman and the Joker.

The story is great. Usually you feel like you know Batman is going to escape a plotline basically unchanged at the end. I didn't feel like that with this one. The only issue I had, which is why I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5, is that a few pages in the kindle edition have black bars across the middle of the page - an issue with the digital version or how well it downloaded. I'm going to try to redownload to see if it fixed it, but there are a few spots where it makes it a little difficult to follow a plot turn.

This..... This was fantastic. It kicks off with a Batman V league beatdown. It really cements Batman as the master tactician of the group, if anyone still needs convincing! Following that, the story really gets going. I had so many questions regarding this, mostly in regards to the Joker and his apparent new face. The answer to this and more questions is absolutely staggering. This story elevates the Joker to something else entirely, and I loved it. Finally, the ending..... oh, what an ending...

This is the story where the Joker FINALLY comes for the Batman. That may sound strange reading that, but what puts this book apart from the likes of other Joker-centric stories is the fact that Joker actually accepts that him and Batman are enemies out to extinguish one another. The book is full of twists at every turn, and makes another excellent addition to my growing roster of Scott Snyder books.

We go back Joker's roots as he is trying to poison the city but he has stepped up his game and that may be because he has been at this longer than anyone suspected.

Greg Capullo's art is just as stupendous here as he has been throughout the series.
