Disc burrs and misrepresented disc capacity
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019
I gave this set of discs 3 stars mostly because I was eventually able to view every episode and get each of them onto my NAS for future convenient access and viewing. However, getting there wasn't all that easy. The quality of the single layer double sided discs left a lot to be desired. Mostly I had trouble with burrs on the center mounting holes. Some of the burrs were outwards and prevented them from easily snapping onto the spindle/hub of my read drive. Some burrs were pushed into the center hole too, causing them to mount off center and vibrate the drive, resulting in no disc found or causing read errors. Careful deburring with a sharp pocket knife resolved this issue with those discs. The bigger concern is that ALL of the single sided discs should have been dual layered discs, as indicated on the case cover insert sheet, and as originally released. But they were not. Those discs were only single layer, single sided. This resulted in episodes that were about half the byte size than they should have been. Prior to ordering this set, I only owned season 13, which I bought at Walmart a year earlier. By comparison, the episodes on my original season 13 discs were around 950 MB each. With these ordered discs, they were around 550 MB (on average) per episode. While this reduction in streaming bitrate didn't really reduce the overall visual quality of each episode of these lower resolution animation shows, I feel a little cheated. These discs were not original release copies, nor exact copies of them. They appear to be a 2nd release. Many of the discs case insert sheets had OliveFilms 2015 printing on them. I can only assume OliveFilms is some fly by night business that rereleases out off production video discs, and does a poor job of it. Never the less, I was kind enough to give this set 3 stars, having subtracted 1 each for the disc burr issues, and the lowered byte size (and thus quality) of most of the episodes.
