I Triple Dog Dare You to Read This Book (and Change Your Life)
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018
Warning: Reading this book could be life-changing—and in a way you may initially think will be detrimental to your career and social life. I dare you to read this book. I double dog dare you! Heck, let's go all the way! I triple dog dare you.
Written by Arianna Huffington of "Huffington Post" fame, this book will show you in no uncertain terms that you simply must sleep at least seven hours a night (more is preferable). If you don't, you will pay the price eventually, and that price could be an early death, since too-little sleep makes you more susceptible to a host of illnesses. We all know sleep is essential for survival, but the new macho is to get by on four or five hours and then brag about it. Using solid scientific and academic studies, Huffington explains the "whys" of sleep in easily-readable and accessible language. (But all the studies are carefully cited in the "Notes" section at the end for science geeks who want the full, academic-language-laden reports.) Lightly sprinkled with humor, the superb book details everything from how to help babies sleep more to how to get the sleep you need when the Mr. is snoring nonstop. And if you really want an incentive get more zzzzzs, sleep can improve your sex life.
I found myself highlighting many passages filled with wit and wisdom, something that I infrequently do when I read. This is one of my favorite quotes from the book, which I think best explains why you should read it: "…cheating sleep isn't an act of courage or a test of will. According to the latest science, it's hubris and folly."
Will you accept my dare? It could mean you'll no longer watch late-night TV, you'll turn off your phone at 10 p.m. and you won't answer emails after midnight. Life-changing indeed.
