Not Quite a Redemption Story
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 6, 2018
I tried to read Colin’s story without prejudice, but as another reviewer said:
“It is inconceivable…that a man responsible for a young woman's seduction, pregnancy, and abandonment, - leading to her suicide would be recast as a romantic hero. That his churlishness leads to her brother being killed in a duel by his own brother further indicates a character not worthy of life.”
I was prepared when I started reading to forgive Colin, to give him a chance at redemption, but he never seemed to earn it. I wanted him to be plagued with an overwhelming guilt, to torture himself (figuratively) rather than just be tortured by the villain. I want a hero who is haunted by his past mistakes, but saved by the tender care of his heroine, think Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester. Colin maybe mentions his guilt once, but is otherwise a carefree and happy scoundrel. If I were the author I would have waited for Colin’s story and let him ruminate in the culminations of his past misdeeds for much longer.
Colin’s sins aside the overall story and the romance was much slower paced than the previous two books. The romance felt nearly non-existence to me. Sarah is a truly boring heroine. The most I can say in her favor is she persevered (or tried to) when times were tough. I think her lack of character is what made the romance feel so lackluster. Nothing made her different than any other “passably attractive” girl, and nothing Colin did or said made me see anything more in her.
The reason this book got 3 stars instead of 2 is the ending. I love a damsel in distress and I thought the climax was very well written. SPOILER Though, I would have Sarah kidnapped from their house, as I don’t believe she would have been stupid enough to wander off alone. The tension after saving her and the revelation of love was also extremely well written.
I HATE skipping books in a series, but warn others if you disliked Colin in the first two books you may not be able to forgive him in this one. Other than this one, I recommend this series.
WARNING: there is sex in this book, it is not erotica, but enough to be a steamy & hot adult romance. Please do not read if you are looking for something PG. Romance-3/5 Steaminess-3/5 Explicitness-4/5
