5.0 out of 5 starsA good primer on getting up and running with Scrivener
Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2016
I've had Scrivener for several months now, and while I felt comfortable using it, I also had a nagging feeling I wasn't using it to its full potential, so I bought Scrivener Superpowers to help fill in the gaps.

It's a quick read. I finished it in a couple hours (I confess that I skipped the author testimonials and went straight to what I was looking for: the instructions and insights into the application).

Just to be clear, this book is no replacement for the Scrivener manual. It gives information in broad strokes, and specifics in certain areas, particularly with regard to the features and flexibility that make Scrivener so powerful but somewhat confusing to new users (like me). It doesn't cover the length and breadth of the software. The author's focus appears to be getting the reader/writer up and running in the application with a minimum of fuss, and in this regard, the book is very successful.

The author also includes lots of links to supplemental information for authors. Of particular use to me is Herron's very own No Nonsense Novel Template. It's much better and far more comprehensive than the default template that comes with the program, and I plan on using it (with some minor modifications) for my own writing projects.

If you are an author looking for software made for writers, or an author wannabe (like me), you should get Scrivener, and immediately after that I recommend buying Scrivener Superpowers, by M.G. Herron.

1.0 out of 5 starsA comic book without a laugh
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2019
There are no super-heros in this book or super-anythings. In fact I have now concluded that there is a strong correlation between "Super" in the title and a nearly content-free book.

If you want to learn about Scrivener there are two good books and a thorough online manual. The books are Scrivener for Dummies and Scrivener: Absolute Beginner's Guide.

In case my introduction was too subtle, this book was a waste of my money and my time.

3.0 out of 5 stars ...mostly for advanced writers..

I feel this book is most helpful to advanced writers of other systems who have published before as the examples are given with a few published authors who all published with Word before they found Scrivener. Some screen shots must be viewed with reading glasses or a magnifier and some few may be impossible. I do feel you should understand and know how to use Storyboarding before buying this book and as I do not, that whole part was lost to me. There a number of hints worth checking out in this book if you decide to go with Scrivener. I will keep this book for reference should I go with Scrivener and get proficient enough with it to understand and benefit from this book. The MAC section is about 100 pages and the PC version to follow also about 100 pages or so. Scrivener Tips for Pros section was helpful reading though I may never get there to use the program as dispirited as I am about the program currently. As someone wrote previously, joyless in its presentation. It is that and in my book though new, pages are falling out in the first half of the book. It will never make it to a used book sale.

Allan Story
5.0 out of 5 stars START with this book! Unexpectedly great for writing Windows non-fiction Kindle books
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2020

From reading other reviews, I thought I might benefit from this book since so few deal with the Windows version of Scrivener and since I felt the need of further help. I was a bit put off at first becaused his focus seemed to be on fiction writing and my interest was in writing non-fiction Kindle books. But the book suited my needs exceedingly well. It was well worth the premium over what I usually pay.

The tutorial included with Scrivener did not give me a helpful overview. Nor did I find the manual in the help section helpful at my stage of the game. I've now found some other more helpful things, but Herron's book gave me the best overview I've found, more logically laid out. But this is far more than simply an overview. It is a substantial and detailed manual for Scrivener. Certainly it's not comprehensive, but he got me far enough that I think I can handle things on my own.d

It really helped to have his explanation that however you customize the editor, that customization does not lock in the output. The output is controlled by the compiler, which itself is highly customizable. And he walks you through several output formats controlled by the compiler. He even tells you that for a Kindle e-book, you need a download from Kindle (he gives you a link) which then appears as an option for the compiler output. He also has a good section (that doesn't show up in the table of contents) on how to structure a non-fiction book in the chapter on How to Structure Your Story. He helpfully explains usage of the cork board and the inspector (the why as well as the how). And he explains importing files you may already have on your computer.

I wish I had started with Scrivener Superpowers instead of Scrivener's tutorial. I suggest you do so.

Full disclosure - I didn't read any of the part on Scrivener for Mac. But I assume it's equally helpful.

Opinion One
5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and Easy to Understand/Learn to Use Scrivener
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2017

Wow! I just purchased Scrivener and am a new writer. Not only does the book describe how to use the software, it also describes how to apply Scrivener's features - planning, scene and character sketches, revising, editing and compiling. The author, Matt, discusses Scrivener's templates and offers some ideas on how to prepare custom templates to meet your individual needs.

Learning to use the sotware is easy with the help of this book. Scrivener is great at making it easy to organize the book writing process - both for fiction and non-fiction. All the reader needs to add is their imagination and creativity. I am a longtime Word user but Scrivener is much less cumbersome to use for long documents. Revising and reordering sections of the document is a easy to do.

The book has separate sections for Mac and Windows users. I found it to be a great purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, short and to the point

The book contains a lot of excellent advice on writing in general, aside from all of the great scrivener tips. He lost me a bit when he went into printing out the index cards and pinning them to a wall or cork board. I love scrivener because I don't have to do that! But, as it says, to each his or her own. I expected more of an overview of his template though, a walk through of the pieces, screen shots, advise on it. The book is a really good value and highly recommended for anyone using or considering scrivener. One of the few that shows the differences between the windows and mac versions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource and Fantastic Book

The book is perfectly structured. The structure enables a drive by get to know Scrivener features. I will be revisiting this book as a reference as I continue my journey into the multitude of Scrivener features.

This review is for a Kindle version.

Note for Mr. Herron: I own Scrivener Version 3.2.3 (14868) - I noticed a bit of drift within user interface - for a total Luddite (I am not) this might be a bit disorienting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A finished novel on the horizon... finally!
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2016

I’m seven years into writing the proverbial ten-year first novel. My writing is organic, driven by moments of inspiration. Which means it just grows and grows, never gets organized, and nothing ever gets finished. I could envision that tenth year slipping into an eleventh, and so on.

But now Scrivener Superpowers has come along! Combine one fantastic book with one fantastic program, and I can see putting final touches on my own book within the next year-and-a-half (eight-and-a-half years instead of ten and counting). I’ve never been published, and I’m not so young anymore, so a year-and-a-half makes a difference.

This book’s virtue is that on the one hand it offers a thorough grounding in the business of writing and producing a book—the author literally shares everything he knows about this—and on the other hand provides a step-by-step walkthrough of how to use Scrivener at the most detailed, customized level. Scrivener isn’t totally intuitive, and dabbling wasn’t going to do it. Plus I’m not one to browse the help menu or ferret out other directions. I needed my hand held. Loaded as it is with “>” paths from the program, this is the book to do just that.

A couple of things especially noteworthy about this book are the many invaluable links the author provides throughout this book (for example, his own No Nonsense Novel Template or another writer’s Six Core Competencies) and his sharing of how he’s customized a certain feature when it doesn’t quite work to his best advantage.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational jump-start to writing with Scrivener

I found watching instructional videos about Scrivener on YouTube only gave me piece meal information. This book puts the program features into a context with suggestions for using them to structure an entire book. I particularly liked the Storyboarding section as this was something I was most curious to learn. It was also useful to see how successful writers use the program to assist their writing. There was just enough instruction to get started, without frills that might confuse a beginner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Useful

This book provided a useful introduction to Scrivener and some advanced features. The author provided step-by-step instructions and the information on compiling an ebook for Amazon was particularly helpful. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that some of the screenshots are tiny and I had to tap to open them in another page to read them. I found the book helpful. The personal comment on hw te author used the Scrivener features also helps.
