5.0 out of 5 starsMarvelous new book in the series...
Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2016
Lucky Bertie Pollock. He's just turned seven years old in "The Revolving Door of Life", Alexander McCall Smith's latest novel in his "44 Scotland Street" series. Bertie's mother, Irene - possibly one of the worst mothers in modern literature - has been taken by mistake into a Bedouin harem while visiting the Gulf states. For the first time in his short life, Bertie doesn't have Irene bossing him around and not letting him have any fun at all. He's had to wear pink pants to show his solidarity for gender issues, and he's not allowed to play with boys. All Bertie wants is to play with boys, wear a kilt, and have a Swiss Army knife. Now, maybe he's too young for the knife, but he knows what he wants. Bertie's father - the hapless Stuart married to the awful Irene - can't stand up to her. But while she's "away" in the Middle East, Bertie, his baby brother, and Stuart are under the care of Stuart's mother, Nicola, who has come to Edinburgh to take care of the three guys. Suddenly Bertie gets a kilt, pizza, and boy friends to play with. But can it last?

Bertie and his family are just two of the many characters in Smith's Edinburgh stories. A bit like American author Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" series, which center around the eccentric occupants of an apartment building in San Francisco, Smith's books also feature a cast of characters. A bit less eccentric than Maupin's crew, Smith's characters are a charming lot of artists and dealers, coffee shop owners, dogs, a Duke-who-possibly-isn't-REALLY-a-duke, and, of course, Bertie Pollock and the dreadful Irene. This latest book - the 10th in the Scotland series - is less plot-centric and more character-centered. Oh, things happen but they are relatively minor things, and the reader concentrates more on the characters.

One of the best things about series books is the chance to return to old friends and catch up on their lives. This is only the second Smith book I've read but I'm surely returning for #11! I want to know what happens to Bertie, and all the others I've become enamoured with in only two books.

I love this author and have read just about all of his books, but this one is not his best. In my opinion there was way too much philosophical discussion that went on too long. Instead I would have liked to learn more about the adorable little Bertie and how he was coming to a brighter life thru his Granny. And maybe a little more about Cyril, the capricious little dog with the gold tooth. And there was hardly a mention of Big Lou with her man troubles. I guess I was hoping that the interesting characters of the series would get more time than they did. That being said, I await the next installment of the 44 Scotland Street series. It will be interesting to see if the terrible Irene will get the last word about how to raise two little boys, or if the spirited Granny will win out the day.

A classic McCall Smith scene: a chase through dark alleyways of Edinburgh, good guys pursued by...perhaps a force that is not so very threatening. A good moment in this book which is otherwise slow and tedious - not another side road. Keep the series going, though - we love it.

Not his best. He seems to be running out of ideas for the Scotland Street series.

Didn't like the reader. Voice volume fluctuated too much-too loud then too soft.

Young Bertie is one of my absolute favorite characters. A new Bertie book is a *happy dance*, dive onto the couch, and joyfully immerse myself in the world of the characters living in the 44 Scotland Street world. Earlier books have all been 4 or 5 stars for me.

What happened with this book? :-( There was way too little Bertie and his father Stuart, especially in light of the big cliffhanger at the end of book 9. What a big letdown, especially since this is a big favorite series.

I was unhappy with the outcome of Irene's visit away at the book's ending. At least in the next book Bertie has a strong ally. Hoping for much more Bertie and his family in book 11, and much less Domenica and Angus. I like Angus, but not his discussions of architecture, light, etc.

I did enjoy Stuart's mother, Nicola, arriving to visit him and her two grandsons. I loved reading about Nicola's visit, and how she relieved Bertie of his various lessons and psychotherapy, and supported Bertie's wish to be a normal little boy. :-) Seven year old Bertie's many innocent comments to Grandma about his baby brother Ulysses, their mother Irene, etc. *no spoilers* were LOL moments.

I very much disliked the drawn out sociological, abstract conversations of other characters in this series, such as: Domenica's conversation with an unnamed "friend" on "the justification for male assumptions of entitlement ... ".

Matthew and Elsbeth are OK characters, but both are kind of boring. I did enjoy reading about the mystery they discovered. I liked the Duke's story line too.

I also enjoyed Pat's dilemma with her beloved father, the unfolding of the matter, and the conclusion. Bruce was his usual narcissistic self, the character you love to dislike.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacks much. Repeats much, not very good.
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2018
I enjoy Bertie and this book did not have enough of him. The end just happened. No resolutions about anyone's story, the book just stopped dead.

MUCH too much of this book is tedious, going on and on about everything, rambling here and there.

Bertie's grandmother Nicola is great, his father needs a swift kick in the rear and his mother Irene needs to be removed. The problem is, ALL the funny lines about Bertie and his vastly awful mother, and his baby brother have been said in previous books. Having Bertie's situation drag on indefinitely is no longer amusing, just tragic. It isn't a new book, when the same laughs are repeated in each one.

If one has read others in this series then most of the characters will have appeared before. Too many however seem to show up in this book, but serve no purpose. They must be incomprehensible to a new reader.

While yet another in this series, it does not live up to the earlier ones.

I was presented with the first few chapters of this to sample before considering purchase. Of course I was hooked but the amazon system didn’t work well and I have ended up buying two kindle copies which is of course stupid. This has stopped me ever buying a kindle book again.
