Perhaps some authors have "X" number of good books in them - this is Lethem's "X + 3"

What passed off as fun and quirky in his earlier works like "Fortress of Solitude" and "Motherless Brooklyn" now just seems tired and cheeky. The major characters grate on you from the beginning, and the dialogue seems almost designed to make the reader sympathize with no one involved. Disappointing - I used to look forward to Lethem's books, but I don't know that I can say that after his last few efforts.
