I like this series. The books are fun and light hearted but I found this addition weak. It felt short and I got bored with the same two things being repeated over and over again: 1. Fortune waking up quickly and being worried she'll blow her cover because of her amazing reaction times; and 2. Fortune worrying her cover will be blown by a plot device because the cover is not that "deep".
Also, nothing happened here to move the story along at all. I like some character/story development in my series but here all we got was Gertie being reduced to slap-stick side-kick status which I think is a shame.
Also, the character of Celia makes no sense. I get that she is a plot device but she shows no consistency. Why on earth does she want to run Fortune out of town? She was grateful to her and happy to help her out previously and now for no reason at all she's been returned to bigoted, small town, red-neck mode. Maybe there will be some big reveal but I can't think of anything short of Dissociative Identity Disorder that would cover such wild swings for no reason except to provide a plot threat to the main character.
I am not saying I didn't enjoy the book, it was okay and had it's moments, but I don't think it was up to par. It felt like a bit of a phone-in to me. (I did check and it looks like it is substantially shorter than the others in the series).
