Not your average Scarpetta novel…

I was worried after reading mixed reviews of just what I was in for with “Chaos”. Now, I’m not Patricia Cornwell, but she is one of my favorite authors.
Is this a “typical Scarpetta novel?”. No. I think that’s what people didn’t like about it.
Does it seem like the character is repeating herself? Saying and thinking the same things over and over again? Yes, because she does. Just as you or I might feel if we were called into work, unexpectedly, hot, tired, anxious and not looking forward to her sister visiting.
It’s an insight into Scarpetta that we rarely see. She knows how she is judged. For who she is, what she does, who she’s married to, etc. Who hasn’t been literally uncomfortable in the clothes they were wearing at one time or another? Her shoes, and her constantly having an internal dialogue about them helped me relate to her as a person, a woman, who hates pumps, especially when she has no stockings on, is in a heat wave and her shoes are literally falling apart. Just as she feels as if things she usually has control over, like a crime scene, evidence, etc. are falling apart.
Try and read this books with no expectations except to glimpse the life and Dr. Kay Scarpetta and I don’t thing you will be disappointed.
