5.0 out of 5 starsThriller set in WYOMING
Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2016
Off The Grid is the 16th book in the hugely successful Joe Pickett series by C J (Chuck) Box. The book was launched in March this year in the States and went straight to No 1 in the New York Times best sellers list… Joe is a Wyoming Game Warden and, in Off The Grid, is asked by the State Governor to search for an acquaintance called Nate Romanowski whom the Governor believes has been despatched in somewhat strange circumstances to the desolate Red Desert area of Wyoming to check out a possible Jihadi plot. Nate is on the run from justice and was tracked down by two very secretive US intelligence agents who promised him immunity, and the wiping of his criminal record – if he cooperated… He was chosen largely because of his falconry expertise and the skills necessary to survive in the wilderness… one of the key suspects believed to be operating in the desert, Muhammad Ibraaheem (Ibby), is also a keen falconer. Joe was in turn promised that the large medical expenses for his daughter following her hospitalisation would be met by the State if he assisted in the way the governor asked. Both men have the same more than scary dream of what is about to happen – a sort of Butch Cassidy stance against overwhelming force.

Joe and Nate (who actually know each other) embark, separately – but ultimately together – on a fast moving and thrilling adventure in the desert. Joe’s daughter, Sheridan, is also in the wasteland – innocently involved in the plot, but also in grave danger. The action is dramatic, a real page turner, and builds to a terrifying and violent conclusion.

In one sense the plot is far fetched, but in another it is quite believable. The weapon the terrorists are planning to use (an EMP – no more for fear of a spoiler…) is truly frightening in its implications. The scheduled impact, as Nate says, was more major than 9/11.

Off The Grid is a real treat for TripFiction readers. The glorious wildlife and natural beauty of Wyoming (the smallest US State in population terms) come through loud and clear – from tracking a grizzly bear in the Bighorn National Forest to the initially desolate, but ultimately teeming with life, Red Desert. Chuck is a proud inhabitant of Wyoming and his love of the State is quite apparent – he is also a member of the Tourist Board. All the locations in the book ring true.

I guess that after 16 books in the series, you might expect another Joe Pickett thriller to be a little tired and formulaic – but Off The Grid is absolutely not. It is a great read for anyone who loves a really good thriller written by a master of the art.

3.0 out of 5 starsLatest Pickett enjoyable, but not excellent read.
Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2016
I am a huge Joe Pickett fan – I binge read the series over the last couple of years, and most of the books are excellent, fun filled romps through Wyoming. I now pre-order the books on kindle and usually read them in a single sitting or two the week they are released. As this is book 16 in a very long series, I know a lot of people new to this universe pick up a later book to read as a standalone, but I really recommend if you like the idea of this series (and it is amazing) to give it the time it deserves and read from book 1, Open Season.

This felt like the weakest offering in this series in awhile. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it and the characters are still entertaining and the settings are wonderful, but there’s a few things that doesn’t sit well with me. First off, this plot, while enjoyable and action packed, doesn’t really fit in with Joe Pickett being a game warden. I understand that he’s now the governor’s attack dog, but it just feels wrong. I want to read about Joe being a game warden and the weird and wonderful people that he comes across and the landscape. This plot would have been better if it was in a standalone – or even if it was predominantly a Nate spin-off. My preference would have been a standalone with a sheriff, police officer or local vet taking on these issues.

This book also felt like a Nate Romanowski book that had cameos from Joe Pickett and his family. Sure, more words were given to Joe, but most of the character development came from Nate. I’m a fan of the battle hardened Nate, but I admit that I prefer the stories in which the focus is on the Pickett family and Saddlestring.

The setting itself needs mention, because it made me feel at home. It was set in a desert area, and the description of red dirt and no features for as far as the eye can see made me think of Australia and what the outback is like, and although that’s familiar, I love the Joe Pickett novels for their description of a landscape that is utterly alien to me.

I am really interested to see where the next book goes because the last page of Off the Grid had a teaser that really made me start salivating for the next book. Despite everything I wrote about some of the flaws in Off the Grid, I am still enjoying this series and will certainly still be pre-ordering the next one.

If you are a Pickett fan, I’d advise still reading Off the Grid, because it does further the lives of the characters in this universe. If you’re new to Saddlestring, Wyoming – I’d start at the beginning of the series with Open Season.

I saw George Martin - the Svengali behind the Beatles Music - quoted somewhere once, he said something like "I missed out on royalties for most of the Beatles recordings but I'm happy with what I've got. I look at a man and wonder are you a 'good' person? It's love and family that matter most in this life". I see something of this philosophy in the work of C J Box and which is one reason as to why I both like and enjoy his writings.

"Off the Grid" seems to me to have a pretty much more complicated, albeit fascinating plot than previously for a Joe Picket novel though I read it with my usual great pleasure. [As an animal loving vegetarian I do wish he'd ease up a bit on his description of hawks turning their prey into a mush of blood and feathers however!:-) ] I had expected publication a few moths earlier than the actual day of its release so perhaps there had been a problem with the plot? At any rate I was a bit confused only for a little while with "Ibby" - a gentleman of Middle East origins - being the surrogate leader of a band of Middle Eastern, obviously terrorist thugs.

C J brings all the loose ends together just as successfully as usual though and I'm looking forward to the next book in the Joe Picket series coming out in early 2017.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Box Winner

Another successful outing for C J Box in his long-running Joe Pickett Series.

Although there is an improbable encounter between Pickett, his daughter Sheridan and Family Protector Nate Romanowski in the dry desert of souther Wyoming, this book is well paced and keeps you in the story.

As usual, Box successfully makes the outdoors a part of the story. His description of the Red Desert of Wyoming, a place I had never heard of before, is fascinating and makes me want to visit to explore at some point. This story brings Wyoming's outdoor culture and modern day terrorists together in a believable tale of the development of a terrorist plot against critical American infrastructure. Fans of "false-flag" spy stories will appreciate the turn the story takes near the end with the chief (dupe) provocateur.

As usual, Romanowski is a critical and fascinating figure around who this tale turns. Pickett remains the guidon of probity and right; his every-man qualities and shortcomings making him again a tremendously sympathetic figure easy to relate to. The story moves and has Box's usual mix of great characters, twists and turns, a well described landscape critical to the tale and touches of larger contemporary questions facing civil society.

The man writes good fast paced suspense with 3D characters (sometimes recycled from other books but always fun). Between the lines are striking insights into Western contemporary politics. Mr. Box has that rare ability to get inside the minds of his characters and enable his readers to see through their eyes. One may be surprised or even enlightened by that view. Like the vistas of Wyoming, it may alter you prospective on issues you had long ago resolved. He is so fair and open minded that you will seldom know his own views. He can even share the Bear's point of view. We should have journalists who write like him.

Well written. Interesting characters and plot. However, I don't care for the subtle nod to conspiracy theories that the men and women who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe are eavesdropping on us for sinister reasons. They are looking for the bad guys. Like the ones who stormed the capitol building.

I've read all the Pickett series in sequence. I think they are all great books; Off the Grid is no exception. I really like all the characters Mr. Box created for the series and those introduced in the various books. Off the Grid is a very good storyline, it progresses at a good rate and pulls the reader through the book right to the end. I highly recommend it.

I am a big C J Box fan and I almost always give his books a 5 star rating. As usual, his descriptions of characters, the settings, and scenery are outstanding. I always can picture myself "right there." However, the story line in this book was a little too out there for my tastes. The situation of Joe, Nate, and Sheridan all coming together in the same place at the same time was just a little too much. The wrap up left me with kind of a "huh?" I guess I need to read that part again. Still, C J continues to be my favorite author and I look forward to the next Joe Pickett installment.

The quality of writing and the storyline have increased with each of the last 4 or 5 books, or at least held to the lofty Pickett standard. This one didn't hold together as well for me. It was good, just the plot and storytelling didn't take me along. Walking through the dessert; doubling back with that gal; the charismatic leader and his cause; how Nate AND Sheridan both coincidently ended up in the Red dessert...it was like mismatched puzzle pieces that almost fit...i needed a logic hammer to make it work. STILL, I enjoyed the book and really love the characters.

This is another good story starring Joe Pickett and Nate. The soon to be ex-governor asks Joe to go off on a bunny trail to investigate some strange things happening in the Red Desert.

This is easy reading, when you get tired of the heavy literature (Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel for instance) this is what you want to read. It is sort of like predictable with some twists and the characters are all known, well you have to read all the preceding books, there is 14-15 of them). I suspect the next book will have Joe Picket perhaps in a Zimmer Frame (he ages as the series go along) and his beloved wife's mother trading up her latest husband for the last time...
The Joe Picket books are mixture of Enid Blyton innocence and Tarantino violence. How many of your friends tear of the ears of the people that cross their path? And of course there is the sub story of how Joe Picket survives the bureaucracy of the State Department he works for. Joe Picket never tells a lie (and cannot ignore any infringement regarding the game or natural resources of Wyoming); he will book and arrest anybody. The last of the straight arrows, nor alternate facts for Joe Picket.
I enjoyed the book (and the preceding ones in the Series) but it is light weight and I suspect C. J Box knows he will not win a Pulitzer for his writing, but still worth the trouble to read.

Another exciting book from C.J. Box. This is one of his best, to me, primarily because Nate played a major role and April was blessedly absent. The author has found another creative way for Joe to lose a state truck--gotta love it. Reading this one may keep you awake nights wondering how close this fiction is to truth.
