5.0 out of 5 starsAbsolutely Wonderful
Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019
Carolyn Brown has become one of my favorite authors over the last year and have yet to be disappointed in Abby of her novels. "Lullaby Sky," just blew me away. I literally stayed up all night long in order to read this novel straight through. Ms. Brown hits on so many topics including domestic abuse, the power of friendship, the healing power of helping other, the true meaning of family, love, and how fulfilling self-esteem and empowerment can be.

She truly brings her characters to life. They are our friends, our support system, our family -- biologically or otherwise. She is true to who they are, in how she writes them and their personalities.

In addition, the author is true and honest in the topics she covers, no matter how disturbing they may initially be. She does this through her characters and their life experiences, how many are so different, yet some are similar. She demonstrates the multifaceted aspects of life from so many individuals points of view and does it while staying true to the storyline and the characters.

As an aside, if you don't know all the verses to Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, you will want to look them up by the end of the novel.

1.0 out of 5 starsPainful read for all the wrong reasons
Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2016
Lullaby Sky is a painful read, but not because of the plot. The writing is inane, the characters one dimensional, and the plot is completely predictable. The young girl in particular just grates on one's nerves as she says lines that no six year old would ever utter. Perhaps to write something more realistic would give credence to the story. But the hyperbolic use of cliches--sometimes multiple ones in a single sentence--is enough to kill even an otherwise well-written novel (which this one is not).

I have had this book for sometime and had not read it, I have to admit I was trying to finish up some of the series that I had started, that finished I was browsing my Book List of unread titles and stumbled onto Lullaby Sky. Decided to read it, what a surprise, truly inspirational. Was not expecting this at all, so happy it was an extremely well written book, it combined despair, loss, forgiveness, insecurity, New beginnings, moving on to a better place, clarity to know the difference between being happy, sad, afraid, and being able to go on to a safer, happier life. Pulling is a must read. I am extremely lucky to have a wonder husband and family, and I pray for those in Hannah, Josie, and Arabella's situation. You never know what you neighbor lives with in her life. Thank you Carolyn .

Cute story, however; it would have been an easier read had the author paid more attention to details. At times the young daughter's age is quite young and then within a matter of weeks during the story, the child is spouting adult-like conversations. Next chapter, the child again is speaking as a 3-5 year old. This sloppiness interrupts the flow of the story. I also noted inaccuracies when it came to language use for the area and various references to location.

Starting over after an abusive relationship with friends, family, and a house called Lullaby Sky. This heartwarming small town charmer meandered its way, but touches the heart on a woman's path to healing.

After seven years of abuse and being controlled by her husband, Hannah is free and she got her daughter free and clear, too. It will take some time for the internal scars to disappear, but with the support of best friends, Liv, Darcie, Cal, and Travis and her neighbors, Aunt Bertie and Miss Rose, she and Sophie stand a wonderful chance at finding their happy.

Hannah's old farmhouse that once belonged to her grandmother and the settlement money that mean she doesn't have to work again if she wants give her ideas. She will turn the place into a home for abused women when the local shelter is full. While everyone supports her decision, they also worry that it is too much too soon. Hannah has a feeling that it will help her heal instead.

Meanwhile, she worries over her friend Liv who is in her own abusive marriage, but wants no help, her friends Darcie and Cal who secretly have loved each other all their lives, and she wonders about the sparks that fly whenever she is near quiet carpenter, Travis.

The Lullaby Sky is signature Carolyn Brown in many ways from the country charm, the multi-generational cast of characters, easy and gentle flow of the story, some fun and some poignant moments. I felt cozy and glad to be back in familiar territory with the author's writing.

But, it also lacked something that other similar books she wrote has. It offers very little angst or tension that a story of this nature should have naturally produced. I'm not one for over the top drama or unnecessary angst, but I counted many times when the opportunity to add some excitement in a confrontation moment with the ex or one of the women's exes was non-existent. I also felt there should have been more anxiety in the house when Hannah had the frightened abused women and kids staying with her when the shelter was full or needed to hide these folks. Again, it was all unicorns and rainbows. Even Hannah's daughter, Sophie is this perfect princess girl that behaves like she never had an abusive father (though he never abused her- he ignored her existence) or that she is a young kid who should act out now and then. All the adults love this kid and fell over themselves making her world a dream. It was over the top and beyond unrealistic.

By no means did I dislike this story, but it finished with something lacking

Brittany Pressley was a familiar narrator and she got the Texas drawl, the variety of voices, and the mood of the scenes really well. She's easy to listen to for the gently paced country charmers like this story.

So, I liked it, but didn't love it. I definitely want more of the author's books. They are comfy escape read/listens that I can recommend.

Everyone should read this book. Love the different direction that Carolyn is taking with her books. The stories have more breath and depth. This last year was a difficult one for everyone. Covid and chemo kept me occupied. When I could I read, I even revisited favorite authors first works THANKS to Amazon and Kindle and Carolyn Brown. Her first books were good reads but she has really developed as an author. I am working my way through all of her books again. She never makes me scream OMG buy a atlas, dictionary, and old set of World Books!! She actually visits the areas she writes about. As you read you "recognize people, places, and things" common to us all! People are the same no matter where you go.

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary read for young "love".

Excellent read to help everyone understand the plight of abused women. It is so easy to find yourself and your children in this type of situation. It is equally as important to understand why and how it is kept secret. Women submit to this horrible mental and emotional abuse out of fear for their children and loved ones. Unfortunately they believe that no one can tell that something is wrong. Learning about tracking devices and hidden cameras causes anger, outrage, and another sense of being violated.
I encourage this read for any young woman contemplating marriage.

I had a hard time putting the book down As it was a great story line. If you have not read this book do not read my review in a first or so as not to ruin it.
I felt the ending was anti climatic. I guess I felt a little more action could have happened with the undesirable characters in the book. It seemed to be going along great with so much potential for a more action packed story line before the ending. It ended great, just no surprises or suspense, other than waiting for the bad guys to cause some trouble so the good guys could conquer them at last.

This book is my number one book. That I've ever listened to and read. If you have ever been abused in any way. You need this book. It will bring you tears, laughter, pain, happiness, hope, and anger. It will pull at your heartstrings. You will not be able to put it down, and you will be sad when it ends. Audible is a must with this book. It brings the characters to life. Sophie and her little accent will warm your heart. All the little sayings that go on throughout the books. Will leave you in stitches. I can't thank you enough for this book Carolyn Brown. You see it touches home with me. Best thing is I have my Travis, his name is Ryan. I thank God every day for him. I would recommend this book to all ages. It's a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving Forward After Domestic Abuse
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2022

I've read this book twice now. Once in 2016, just divorced from my abuser, but still letting him charm me. Then again in January 2022. Awareness of PTSD, and how abusers groom an intimate partner to be a victim were very well described in this novel by the author. I'm in a wonderful relationship with a wonderful man for almost 4 years now, half of our marriage has been during COVID. We are thriving under the precautions recommended by the CDC - which is an additional testament of our projection and path as a couple. However, domestic abuse cases are more prevalent than ever requiring more participants in helping the abuse get say from the abuser.
