Reasonable story, good message, but not a classic

The book is about a young girl with a good deal of anger and some presuppositions who has to live with her aunt and uncle against her will as a result of a her parents being unable to take care of her (prison and alcohol). It follows her growth as she meets people who challenge her expectations of them, is actively cared for by adults, and endeavors to catch and befriend a young, stray dog with whom she empathizes for his family-less-ness. The writing is not high-level or particularly beautiful, sophisticated, or otherwise noteworthy. And I personally found the anger and biases expressed by the girl initially to be off-putting, but it improves as the story goes on and is a reasonable book with some good messages woven in.
