5.0 out of 5 starsโ€œHe may strike more precisely than a thousand drone bombings.โ€
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on June 17, 2016
Pacific Northwest author Jack Patterson writes with the verve that accompanies good journalism: he has written articles for some of our major newspapers such as The New York Times and is the recipient of many journalistic awards. That acumen is evident in his book THE WARREN OMISSIONS (five have dealt with sports, Patterson's obsession since childhood), a mystery thriller with the JFK assassination and controversy at its core. Now Patterson opens a new series โ€“ a Brady Hawk Novel, Book 1 โ€“ and we are introduced to yet another ongoing highly skilled creation of a character whom we want to follow. Brady Hawk is an operative whose skills and derring-do match any of those committed to books to this date โ€“ he is the United Statesโ€™ top assassin.

One of the many positive aspects of Jack Patterson's books is ability to engage the reader from the first paragraph and then sustain that level of interest until the story is complete. Nowhere is that gift more important than in writing mystery thrillers. For a taste of this new series (a very timely one), the opening of the book follows: โ€˜Present Day Zaranj, Afghanistan - Brady Hawk jammed a magazine clip into his P226 pistol and set it down on the dusty table. He stared at it for a second, pondering the twisted path that led him to this moment, the one where he geared himself up to go on a killing spree. The last time heโ€™d been in this godforsaken part of the world he was helping people in a substantial wayโ€” not masquerading as an English teacher, but getting down in the sand and helping the people who needed it most. This time his help was less tangible but far more important. Hawk concluded the only thing that had really changed was his tactics. Digging wells and teaching people different methods of irrigation were helpful, but it was useless if they were about to be killed by 21st Century marauders who conjured up the spirit of Genghis Kahn. Heโ€™d help them again more tangibly in due time. But in the world now, there were more pressing mattersโ€” specifically, a terrorist group named Al Hasib. Hawk stepped over the dead body in the middle of his kitchen and strode toward the bathroom. Hawk brushed the dust off the mirror and stared at the man in front of him. Despite his reluctance, his eyes went directly to the scar on the right side of his forehead, a constant reminder of why he was here. His scraggly beard fell well past his neck, a symbol of his feeble attempt to blend into life here. Despite his disdain for the regionโ€™s troublemakers, heโ€™d managed to temper his anger, hiding in plain sightโ€” until now.โ€™ And in that short opener Jack has our complete attention held to the last page.

The synopsis: โ€˜With ruthless terrorist cells multiplying by the day, the head of the snake must be cut offโ€”and Brady Hawk swings a sharp ax. Realizing the ineffectiveness of Americaโ€™s own counter terrorism unit, Texas senator J.D. Blunt proposes a black ops program thatโ€™s so off the books that only a handful of people know about it. Given the reins and funding to construct his own organization, Blunt creates Firestorm and recruits one of the most effective operatives the American government has ever known: Brady Hawk. Working with D.C.-based handler Alex Duncan, Hawk learns the location of the chief bomb maker for the terrorist group Al Hasib and enters into a race against the clock to eliminate him as well as the man behind the cell before they destroy a key U.S. target. But thatโ€™s not all Hawk learns. As the son of the worldโ€™s most renowned weapons manufacturer, Hawk must also come to terms that maybe his father isnโ€™t who he thinks he isโ€”and neither is Blunt.โ€™

Another thriller from the talented Jack Patterson. Grady Harp, June 16

1.0 out of 5 starsSimplistic and could have used an editor!

I tried. Gave it my best shot. Then another. And on the third, at page 130 out-of-I-don't-care-enough-to-look I gave up. Done. The simplistic and contrived scenarios, the dialogue and the childish imagination that had to be behind the characters and action were bad enough. Add in the continuity errors? A terrorist character recounts the death of his father.....and then a dozen pages later recounts the death of his father and it is all different. The main character describes the layout of the room with "an oxygen tank and a machine gun" in the corner. And in the next moment he's ripping that machine gun off the body of the guard....who just sentences earlier was sitting at a table with only his sidearm. Aggravating to read. Putting this one down for good. I would rather read the wrapping ng in a package of toilet paper than spend one more minute on this drivel.

R. J. Patterson created a tough and interesting character (Brady Hawk) which I'm sure will get even better with time. Since this was the first R.J. Patterson novel I read, I look forward to reading more of his novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars For me, lacks plausibility

Brady Hawk is an ex SEAL, and is part of a black ops group set up by Senator Blunt. The legality of the group is somewhat questionable, as is the use of the word "group" because it appears that Hawk is the only agent in the field that is doing something vaguely useful. He also has a handler, Alex. Alex (female) is given a warning that Blunt's group is illegal and is going down. What follows is an action thriller about Hawk trying to stop a major terrorist group in Afghanistan.

For me, the story had failings. The writing had some minor editorial issues regarding grammar and word usage, but it had major structural issues. To get tension, Hawk walks into a number of real problems that really should end the story. The way he gets really needs the author getting him out. In short it is lacking credibility. At one point, Hawk is shot, and then proceeds as if nothing had happened. The basic background and setting is top class; unfortunately, for me, too much simply had me shaking my head wondering why something else did not happen. As one last example, Alex has a lot of spare time and does some quite deep research on Hawk's parentage. Why not some effort at finding out what it was that led to the warning from the CIA? That just does not make sense to me. In short, an interesting story, lots of action, and probably quite enjoyable as long as you do not want it to make sense.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Hero Enters the Thriller Genre

Brady Hawk is an assassin/operative working for an off-the-books covert ops group named Firestorm created and run by Texas senator J.D. Blunt. His only other contact in this group is his handler, Alex Duncan, a former CIA analyst forced out of the agency by her boss, Simon Coker.

The action takes Brady between Iraq and Afghanistan on the trail of the two leaders of a new and brutally efficient terrorist group called Al Hasib. Nasim Ghazi is the master bomb maker and the group's leader is Karif Fasil. Meanwhile, back in Washington, Alex is beset by mysterious agents trying to get information about Firestorm and Senator Blunt is facing political attack from rival Senator Guy Hirschbeck.

As in any good conspiracy thriller, there are plots within plots and shifting allegiances. Jack Patterson does a good job capturing these twists and ends the book with a final twist that beautifully sets up the next books in the series. A very good read.

I read this book because I am very fond of James Patterson and, I think, Jack Patterson is his son. The author is obviously inexperienced, but will improve with practice, I hope. "First Strike" is the story of an assassin, Brady Hawk, who is employed by the US government to fight ISIS in Afghanistan. Brady operates on his own under the direction of a US Senator, whom appears to be corrupt and his handler is a woman who tends to use her own judgment when directing Hawk's deeds. The story line is a somewhat hero vs bad guy and our hero always wins, with the aid of his handler and the senator. I found most of the story to be impossible, and our hero, Brady Hawk to be blessed with super powers unknown to actual people. I will read the next book, just to be fair in my assessment, and hope for some improvements in the story line.

Nice entry novel. Good story telling with interesting evolving background stories as part of character development. Some strange appearances at just the right time is far fetched. Nefarious elected officials willing to kill for power can either lead to a good next novel or miss it's mark.
