5.0 out of 5 starsFast paced, totally absorbing
Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2017
It is difficult today to find a book that does not have a lot of "padding" to bulk up the text. Superfluous scenes and conversations tend to mislead the reader. Pamela Callow uses only the most relevant, concise sentences and nothing is left but total enjoyment.
I love a book where I use the dictionary to verify or look up definitions. Ms. Callow's familiarity with the English language is impressive, but her vast vocabulary is not used to impress the reader.
Kate Lange is a young lawyer determined to climb the corporate ladder swiftly and land her dream job... as a judge. Her struggles will be interesting and varied. The characters presented in this book have such developed personalities... both admirable and disgusting, that it makes the reader want to he more about their lives... and how they impact Kate's. If you enjoy a good story that is well-written, I recommend this book.

Was mildly interested in the storyline but when I got to page 34 I decided I had read enough of the bad language therefore I quit reading the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.7 Stars--Amateurish But Readable if Ignoring Profanity and Blasphemy

3.7 stars. NOTE: Excessive language for the sake of language. I’m not complaining about a minimal amount. But even the narrator curses and uses blasphemy. Unprofessional.

The story is good enough, but the writing is amateurish. I’m not sure why writers think their lead character needs to be severely damaged. Why does the female protagonist always have to work with her ex-boyfriend in spite of how degraded it makes her feel? I would think women who work with an ex-boyfriend are a rarity instead of the norm. I’m beginning to get really tired of the formula of a weak, broken woman being forced to work with her ex in order to do her job because, of course, she couldn’t get the job done without him! What? Stop it already. It’s not uplifting. It’s not inspiring. It’s not the norm. Build a new formula, already.

The managing law partner at Kate’s new employer is certain she is sleeping with the partner who hired her. He also doesn’t like that Kate’s cop ex-boyfriend sent a good friend of his to jail. So, he keeps a close watch on Kate who is trying to get herself out of hot water when a client’s granddaughter becomes the victim of a demented serial killer, perhaps because Kate didn’t inform Child Services that the teenage girl might be raising herself and involved with drugs. The girl’s self-important mother turns out to be a judge and the ex-lover of Kate’s managing partner. She can’t be bothered with something as mundane as making sure her teenage daughter has proper care. Convinced that the truth about her lack of parenting skills will ruin her reputation, she convinces the managing partner to destroy Kate’s notes regarding the grandmother’s concern.

One lawyer destroys notes in order to protect a former lover. Another lawyer gets involved in a morally decrepit money-making scheme. While Kate manages barbs from her ex-boyfriend and tracks the members of an illegal body farming business, the serial killer continues to leave the torso of his victims displayed in public places.

Amateurish writing skills. But readable if you can get past the excessive profanity and blasphemy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who can you trust?

Kate Lange has been given a new case by one of the director's of the law firm but why has he gotten involved? It seems to be a simple case of a grandmother wanting what is best for her granddaughter but there is nothing that Kate can do as there is no reason to go further with the client. She worries about the old lady as she fears that she is just lonely but everything is that clear cut. Before she can even think further about the client she is given a new bigger case but this time Kate knows that something is wrong and she doesn't know who she can trust. Now that Ethan is trying to get back into her life she doesn't know how much she should tell him. Now that the granddaughter has been found murdered Kate is accused of not doing her job properly and she will need to find answers quickly. But what does this have to do with her other case?
A good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced legal thriller

This was a good read. Descriptive passages draw you quickly into the scenes and full of enjoyable characters you can relate to. My two complaints: after the first three chapters the book was full of foul language. This was really not necessary, the book was engaging, heart pounding, and realistic enough without the language. Second complaint (but it’s a small one): the book is set in Halifax but it really could have been set anywhere - there was no sense of place.
If you don’t mind foul language and gory descriptions, then I recommend this book. Other than my minor complaints it really was a good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, but...

I really liked the story. It was well written and believable. Unfortunately, I didn't like the characters. I understand that to be truly realistic and well developed, characters must have faults, but these characters' faults seem to outweigh their good qualities. The main character was too self absorbed, her ex was a real jerk, her boss a steriotypic winning is all that matters lawyer, etc. I liked the story well enough to probably read one more in the series and see if I like the cranky better.

Everyone has different taste in reading material. After the many good reviews of this book, I bought it. A total bust for me. Had to force myself to finish it. The plot was ancient. Young, attractive hard working girl is hired and used/misused by big shot bosses. The writing style and sentence structure was about high school level. If you're a newly graduated female law student, you might enjoy it. Most everyone else should pass...

3.0 out of 5 stars Descriptions too macabre
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2020

It was difficult to try to relate to a protagonist who repeatedly made foolish and risky choices. Moreover, I found the book to be overly macabre and grisley in its detail. Spoiler: I would have been satisfied had the author stated that an autopsy was performed, rather than describing in detail how body parts were opened and flesh pulled back, etc

This was kind of a mixture of a thriller and a legal plot, with some painful romance thrown in. I’m glad I read it and lost some sleep to get to the ending. At times feeling irritation at Kate for some of the illogical (stupid) things she did. A surprise twist at the end. I would read other books by this author.

Except for the odd use of the word "expunge", and the mandatory "romance" underpinnings, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a career secretary in civil law firms, Callow captured the atmosphere, in familiar, small ways. 3.5 stars. Just please don't used the word expunge as a synonym for emit or waft anymore!

Although the book got better at the end, it took patience to stick it out. The beginning of the book was told as a stream of consciousness that went in too many directions without developing the character. Also, the romance in the book see,ed to be thrown in to make the book more commercial.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story but...

Five stars for the story itself. This book really grabbed me right from the beginning. The story was well done. However, I would really like to see more writers not have to use such foul language. The bad language (especially the f bomb) is so uncalled for. There are several excellent authors who never feel the need to use bad language. I probably won't read any more of Pamela Callow's books. I would really like to see some way to rate books-- similar to the one movies. When I was a member of the book club, they had a rating system.
