This new book masters a small but incredibly important niche---a children's book that is illustrated only with photographs. The sweetness. the color, the whimsy. the "I can't believe this is real" feeling--it's all here. My youngest nephew even wants me to buy a second copy so he can take the photos out and decorate the walls of his bedroom with them !!
This is an excellent read for preschool aged students. My children discussed the first clue given by the grumpy bird for several minutes using turning and talk and then share out in our whole group to try and figure out what other animal it could be. They really enjoyed the real-life photographs in the book as the illustrations. One child commented, "It doesn't have an illustrator because no one made the pictures! They took them with a camera." After discussing how the bird might've interacted better with the mouse in the beginning to make the mouse feel more welcome, or what the mouse could have done to make the bird more open with him, children asked to read the story again. After, some took the book into the nature center and compared the photographs with pictures on the animal fact cards we have. It's the perfect length to sustain attention for a group of four-year-olds and is a nice conversation starter.
