Lance has had a pretty crappy childhood to say the least, but he's taken all that horror and pain and filtered it into writing books.
When Lance has writer's block that won't go away, he begins to have nightmares again and visions of a strange house overlooking a lake.
What a even more concerning is actually finding the actual house by the lake.
As he gets accustomed to his new home he also has been freed from his writer's block.
But what is the actual cost for this freedom and is this new story that seems to flow from his fingers really his story or is something else writing it?

Enjoyed this very much from beginning to end.
Lots of twists and turns as Lance uncovers some hidden truths about himself.
Very well done and a solid story!!

Well done, but definitely has supernatural elements! Kept my interest nonetheless. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

4.0 out of 5 stars DON'T FORGET TO BREATH

"No matter how promising or bright the future sometimes seemed to be, the past had its own way of holding onto people, at times letting out some slack for them to run, but always making sure they knew they were tethered."

More than once while ending this book, there were times when I let out a breath that I did not know I was holding. The suspense builds like building blocks, starting with the prologue which was, I think, the longest prologue I ever read. It goes on to part 1 which was a bit hard for me to read; a grown man beating up a child is not something I care to witness. And part 2 and then the epilogue. Building blocks, one and all.

I really love how Joe Hart uses his words:

"A deep aura of sadness surrounding him, as if he had seen heaven and had been sent away."

"Time is a funny thing. It slips away when you're not looking."

"Lance could read the caretaker's face and pasture like a road map. Memory and sadness were John's real clothes, and Lance knew from wearing his own outfit of misery that that they were unyielding burdens that refused to be sloughed off, no matter how hard one tried."

This is more then a ghost story. It's about the sins of a father and how those sins, and the ghost that linger, effect the children of the future. Lances father had plenty and his grandfather had more.

I know I'm being vague, but I don't want to give too away (no one wants to know the end of the movie before watching it, right?). It's a complex story with complex characters which makes me think of King. If you like horror thrillers, you will enjoy this book. Believe me, you want be disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars A complete stranger

I want to be very honest, I am a hard core horror fan and consider myself very jaded, when I read some of the reviews before purchasing this book and another reader suggested that they too were jaded when it comes to horror so based on this and other rave reviews I decided to purchase, therefore I was a little disappointed when the horror turned out to be mainly blood and Gore, although the first few pages indicated this I gave it a chance, looking forward to the supernatural parts. Because my thrill of horror is things that go bump in the night I was delighted to find Mr. Hart had covered this too. But much of it is pretty bloody. His descriptions are so real, you can literally see, smell, taste, hear and feel what he describes, so it was very much like watching a movie, however it was so well done, that the visuals gave me a sense of having seen it all before, which says a lot about Hart 's ability to write, but certain scenes lacked originality. A little too ambitious with trying to cover all genres of horror I'd say (plus romance??) which was very weak in contrast. The ending (hope this is not an spoiler) refutes the title of the book Lineage. However consider this a good review because my final analysis considers this a good read and I read every line. So bravo!! Once again you've entertained a complete stranger. ( which I think is a good title for a book) Maybe I'll write that one. I recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody good modern ghost/haunted house tale

LINEAGE was exactly as advertised:a ghost story cum haunted house tale. It was my first by author Joe Hart but I'll most likely be buying some more. The writing was detailed and graphic, particularly the first part that tells that story of 10 year old Lance, his mother, and their ultra-sadistic and violent father/husband. The child and wife beatings are described in bloody detail and are truly horrifying. Lance barely escapes with his life and psyche intact. Then the story fast-forwards some 20 odd years to the present where Lance is a successful writer of horror with a girlfriend and life is looking pretty good. Until he suffers from that most awful bane of writers, a block. Lance goes of in search of his muse and finds an old, vacant house by a lake in upper Minnesota. And then the tale begins in earnest.

I enjoyed the writing and the pacing. Some things were predictable (I mean, it is a ghost story after all) but others not, and thing really heat up towards a Grand Guignol ending worthy of Steven Spielberg. There is no sex but plenty of blood and gore, and enough scary, creepy scenes to make me willing to spend a few more bucks to see what else Mr. Hart has up his sleeve.

Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little too "ghostly"

I would have liked to give this 3 1/2 stars but since I couldn't I bumped it up to be kind. Let me start by saying that I love ghost stories. I like the paranormal scary books. This did have those parts that really did creep me out. The beginning talks about Lance's childhood and there is a lot of writing about his abuse. (Just wanted to throw that in so people know before reading.) I really got to like Lance and found myself rooting for him to do things. The reason I wanted to go 3 stars is because it took me forever to read. Normally I have a nook read in 2 days but this one was a little to descriptive and dragged on in places. Also, the reading was a bit far fetched even for me. Like I said, I love ghost stories but the end was just too unimaginable. Overall it was ok, I would like to read more from Mr. Hart but this one was just a little over the top for me.

I could give this a 4.5 stars. Amazing story. So well written I couldn’t put it down. Heartbreaking aspects and creepy scenes. Loved it! Some details I would’ve imagined differently but that’s ok. Had all my favorite things. Haunted house. Some violence. Superb overall!

Wow. I figured out the story line, but had to wait until the very end to be sure. Even so, it wasn't as obvious as most, and there are plenty of twists and surprises to keep you enthralled to the very end. I punched up 4 stars immediately...then, upon considering it with just horror books, I kicked in another star...because, well, most horror books don't really make me cringe in disgust like this one did...and I'm not sure I want anyone who hasn't passed a psychologist exam reading it! I won't hesitate to pick up another Joe Hart book. I'm about to put a few dinners on your table, Joe. Book bub gave me this one, and it was good enough to make me feel guilty for reading it for free.

The main character, Lance Metzger, is an author who has purchased a big, older house on Lake Superior. He plans to stay there and try to overcome his writer's block. The premise leading up to the purchase of the house is a bit supernatural, as is his sudden ability to write again.

The story begins by providing information about Lance's childhood. His father was a harsh disciplinarian, who beat both Lance and his mother often and brutally.

The author keeps a brisk pace throughout the book, providing enough supernatural activity to keep the reader appropriately on edge until the grand finale. The ending was a bit of a surprise. I was expecting him to follow the pace set by most everyone else in the genre, so his slight deviation was refreshing.

Hart is an excellent author. He can turn a phrase so elegantly that words become items of beauty. I look forward to his next work of art.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Real Scare!

This is an old-fashioned ghost story that gives a real scare on almost every page in the last half of the book. That doesn't mean that the first half was not scary and disturbing, it is just that the horror of what humans can do to each other is increased dramatically as one reaches the second half of the book. As I read the book deep into the night, it was all to easy to imagine the scenes that Hart so confidently and precisely wrote. If you are looking for a truly scary ghost story, then this is the book for your next read.
