I’ve been playing for years—self-taught, not serious, and not very good. When I decided to get serious about learning guitar theory and technique, like most of you I found infinite free and paid resources. A lot of good stuff, a lot of hack stuff. Lots of songs, lots of drills, lots of theory theory, but not a lot of great and insightful theory theory. This falls into the latter category.
Having slugged through countless hours of scale practice to no real end without understanding how the scales related to music, I would like to save you the same time and trouble. Buy this book. Read it, then go back and start practicing it the way Mr. Mylotte recommends. It is not a magic bullet, but it is the best foundational study I have found for making sense out of the fretboard using the relationship between chords and scales.
