5.0 out of 5 starsMythic stories at their best
Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2016
I have purchased 3 of the stories but after reading the table of contents, but plan on reading the rest. The 3 I read were awesome and I loved every one of them.

I Bring The Fire Part 1 by C. Gockel

I was very surprised and delighted by the story line. Not knowing a lot about Norse Mythology, always got lost in the names, did not prevent me from enjoying this book. Of course I have some knowledge about other mythologies and very familiar with the Trickster, especially in Native American mythology. But reading this story, I was totally able to relate to the mythology part which was very interesting to me. I often felt like Amy when Loki said some things.

From the moment, I started reading I was captured by the story line. Often you start a book because it sounds good in the write up or review and you just cannot get into it. Not this book, from page 1, I was totally enthralled and wanting to know what is going to happen next. I really enjoyed how the author developed the relationship between Loki and Amy. Beatrice was a very nice touch to the story, she kept the plot alive and filled in a lot of the gaps for both Amy and the reader, very nice touch. I am a big fan of THIS LOKI.

The Wild Hunt by Ron Neito

I was very surprised by this book and totally enjoyed it. I am not sure what I was expecting at the beginning but as it progressed, it only got better and better.

I knew nothing about Kelpies and it was fun to read about this, new to me, mythical creature. The story was one that kept the reader interested in what was going to happen. To see Lily struggle with modern ideas and folklore was exciting, there were times I wanted to shout at her, “open your eyes and use your head”. There were other times where I was just as taken off guard as she was. That, to me, makes a good story one where I think I know what will happen and sometimes I am right while other times, I am not right. I know that I plan to read the rest of books because I am very curious to see what happens to Lily and Troy.

Elsker by S. T. Bende

I am really beginning to enjoy Norse mythology and while some names are well known, Ull was a new god to me. It was fun seeing how this author intertwined myth with fiction. I was immediately hooked. The characters are real and the situations that happen are so normal. It is not easy to mix our current urban lifestyle with ancient myth and make it work, but this book certainly does.

A strong female character is always a plus for me when reading. She is actually a real person that you could actually meet on the street which contributes so much to the storyline. I really enjoyed Ull and Kristia budding relationship and how she is strong enough and he is not able take her over. I love that here is a girl who was always overlooked but when a good-looking boy starts to take an interest in her, she doesn’t fall apart and remains true to herself.

Additions to my review:
THINGS UNSEEN by C.J. Brightley

This story was very interesting, almost apocalyptic but with a paranormal touch. By the end of it, I was so enthralled that I know that I will be reading the next book in this series. It was very well written and at times, very scary. What if this could really happen? The world becoming one Empire under one government and not one for the people. I really enjoyed Aria and Owen together, they seem to be drawn to each other but neither of them really knows why. They are both enigmas and I am curious to see if they are less so as the story goes on.

BLOOD DEBT by Nancy Straight

Wow, this story was extremely interesting and kept my interest up. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books that follow this one.
I would never have thought of Centaurs being totally human and the entire concept of how they live and who they are was unique. Their rituals and customs, although very old fashion, did not really appear to be out of place except to Camille. But that is because she was not raised in their society but as a human. She struggles a lot throughout the story as she loses her mother and goes from a family of 2 to a family of 8.

The story is full of adventure and mystery. It is fast paced. I was kept on the edge of my chair with some of the things that happened. The characters were very real and you could not help but fall in love with the characters. I especially loved how Bianca became Camille’s friend and helped her. You also find that Will and Gretchen are both such protective parents even with Camille who they just accepted into their family. By the end of the book, you finally understand why Camille’s mother hid them both away. Well worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 starsAll but one is a cliffie-book designed to tease the reader into buying the next in the series.
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2016
I actually don't mind serials where each book leads into the next one and where no book is actually an entire story unto itself, but I like to be WARNED when this is the case. Only *one* story in this collection is a complete read. The rest are cliffies... Several of these reads are really good, a few are engrossing, some I couldn't bother finishing, but it is worth the price (for me, free) and most of the time spent sifting through the words. I say go for it, just be aware that only ONE book is an actual complete work.

The first "book", I Bring the Fire, isn't actually so much a "book" as a, extremely long partial story where you have to buy the next "book" to hopefully have any closure. It ends on a cliffie (the Part 1 is kind of a giveaway), so if you like that sort of thing...

The next one, Chosen, is also not a complete story.

The Hunted One, the next one, was too depressing to bother reading, but I caught the tale end of it and it, too, has no actual resolution.

Things Unseen...also ends on a cliffy. I'm sensing a "none of these works are actual complete books but were released so that hopefully readers will get hooked and buy the next in the series" pattern here...

Way of the Wolf was gross. I didn't bother reading much of it.

Eros - I kind of agree with Coop. Forcing people to "love" each other is just wrong but the sanctimonious gods who enjoy jerking people around disagree and so torture him into falling in with the company line. Could have been a very good book - interesting angle, a few fun tangents - if half the fat had been chopped out as it seemed to drag on forever in too many places. Skipping and skimming helped somewhat as it seemed the author was determined to use <all> the words. Ugh, I gave up on it before Part 11 and skipped to the end. Sorry. It was too much like repeatedly picking at a sore scab. Fastforward past umpteen million words and there is an actual ending to this book and it's a nice ending. If I had to rate this book on its own, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars - its rating shouldn't suffer because of my impatience.

The Wild Hunt - yet another "here's a cliffie so you'll buy the next book"

A Demon Bound - Technically it was finished but felt unfinished because of the Epilogue.

Vampire Addiction - *sigh* Cliffie/buy-next-book teaser again

Valkyrie's Vengeance - *double sigh* Yet another cliffie designed to sell the next book. Could have been a great story if it'd had a conclusion.

The Noru - This book with the silly name drove me crazy with the constant repetition of the character's names to each other as though no one would have any idea of each other's names unless they were constantly repeated over and over and over and over and over again. I'm sure you will be shocked to learn that it's also an unfinished cliffie.

Elsker - Yup, a cliffie-book. Has great angles to it, though.

Blood Debt - Yup. You know that pattern I was sensing? Yup.

When I bought the box set. I thought it was COMPLETE stories, was very disturbed when I got to the end of "I Bring The Fire" & it leaves you hanging. You have to buy the rest of the book(s) to find out what happens. They need to tell people these are just TEASER BOOKS, to get you hooked. NOT HAPPY!!!!
Up to that point I was enjoying a good story :(

Just a taste of a few books. No excitement. It's like several cliffhangers so you'll buy the next book with no promise of satisfaction.

2.0 out of 5 stars all books are parts of series they are loss leaders to get you to buy more.

The books themselves are interesting and fun to read but the intent is obviously to hook you into a story and then pay a higher price for the rest of series. I feel that this is a very poor marketing ploy. Lets be honest and let readers know in advance that they are expected to buy more to finish the stories. I frequently buy series and follow ongoing series from authors I like but anthologies like this strike me as a scam and think the methodology is disgusting.
