5.0 out of 5 starsGreat Book!
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2017
I was surprised by the negative reviews on this book. I thought it was a very good read, suspenseful, legally interesting and I liked the characters very much. I had trouble putting it down when I needed to. I did think the main female character was much more impressive in her handling of the case than she seemed to give herself and her department credit for. I think she could move on to bigger things. I have read several of Grisham's novels but wouldn't call myself a huge fan. I usually don't like the characters enough to really care. Previously my favorite was The Firm, but I remember feeling the ending was rushed. I actually liked The Whistler better than most of his books...liking the characters better really helped a lot, but I also liked the way the story transpired over time. It did not feel rushed and played out in a more realistic manner to me. With some books, I like conversation, but if the narration goes on too long, I get bored and start to skim, that was not the case in this book...even though there was a lot of narration at the end, by that time I was so interested in the story that I read every word as I couldn't wait to see how it would all work out.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot Grisham's Best Effort - Boring and Uneven
Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2016
I am a Grisham fan but this is not his best work. If there is such a thing, I would call this a boring page-turner. You keep turning the pages expecting it to get better but then you get to the end and realize---that was it. I mean it has all the nuts and bolts of a solidly written piece of fiction but there is just no spark to it, nothing clever or surprising. After I'd turned all the pages, I blinked several times and turned off my kindle - surprised that it was over because it never quite got off the ground. The characters are one-dimensional and there is no real connection to them. Like the heroine in Gray Mountain, the female lead in this book is totally vanilla. You're not rooting for her or against her as there is little depth or character development.

* some spoilers
The plot is laid out early in the book - there is a corrupt judge colluding with some thugs to skim money at an Indian casino. To expose the corruption, there are a few individuals trying to blow the whistle on the judge to collect cash under the whistle-blower statutes. The whistle-blowers submit a complaint to the agency that investigates rogue judges and an investigation begins. These facts are known early on. The problem is - that's the entire plot. There are no twists or turns it goes in a fairly straight line from corruption complaint to indictments with few surprises along the way. There is also a huge loose end as we never find out what happens to one of the characters who was falsely imprisoned for murders he did not commit. Since this character is a main focus in the prequel, the failure to tie up that loose end is irritating.

All in all - it is just an uneven effort. A disappointing novel from an author from whom we all expect better.

Hard to believe this was a Grisham novel. I haven't heard about him renting out his name to other writers a la Clancy, Patterson, etc so apparently he just sleep walked through writing this for another payday. I'll definitely pay more attention to the reviews before buying next time, and hopefully Mr Grisham puts a little more effort into his work. Have some pride, John, about what gets published under your name! I know at this point in your career and with all your fame you get paid a lot either way, but you are really tarnishing your legacy with this schlock!

2.0 out of 5 stars a less than satisfying effort

This was my first Grisham book. It got off to a slow start and never really picked up. As someone who has been in the system, I found it difficult to believe that the main character would investigate the case without much earlier law enforcement involvement. Most of what happens in the earlier part of the book just wouldn’t happen. The fact that the main character has to be rescued and have the actual case taken over by the FBI (who should have had the case from the beginning), leaving the main character with nothing really to do was just weird. The book’s main failing is that it was relatively boring and the only way to accomplish the task at hand was to have a bunch of things tied up without any real help from the lead character, leaving me to wonder if the author simply ran out of ideas and quickly wrapped it up to be done with it. Perhaps another Grisham book will be in my future, but this one wasn’t what I had hoped for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, poorly plotted

I love the characters and set-up, but as I read the story felt more and more predictable and linear, with no interesting developments character wise and very little interesting happening in terms of plot reversal or reveals. Worst of all is the final twenty percent or so, where the characters are already successful and home free and we have to suffer through page after page of outcomes being summarized, AFTER the tension has ended. This is a best selling writer; didn’t anyone share with him the classic writing advice ‘show, don’t tell’? This was the first Grisham I’ve read. I’ll read more, as I’m pretty sure his general reputation for excellence is merited and that this disappointing novel is not representative of his overall work.

Grisham writes excellent, interesting, suspenseful stories. This is no exception. Well written. But sadly, ruined by bad reading. I listen to a lot of audiobooks. Most readers are very skilled at what they do. This reader is extremely bad. She reads in a monotone and the characters are flat and lifeless. She reads the man's voices in a nasal twang, like she's holding her nose while reading the men's parts. Truly horrible reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak Female "Protagonist" Rescued By Men While She Runs Away
Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2017

If you are interested in following the minute by minute action of reviewing paperwork and government office politics, this is the book for you. We get to read as much about time spent discussing whether to pursue an investigation as we do in the investigation. As with a lot of thrillers by authors into their third dozen books, it seems as if this is the first draft and not a carefully thought out or edited piece of art. Just putting John Grisham on the cover will sell the book, so why edit down?

The most annoying part of this is that we're supposed to be treated to a strong female lead, judicial corruption investigator Lacy Stoltz, but her part in the novel involves mostly paperwork, getting smashed into by a truck, asking permission to go to meetings, and running away from danger.

The actual investigation is started by a couple men who hand the whole judicial investigation to Lacy in a filed complaint, and all she has to do is try to verify it. Then after the bad guys try to kill her in a car accident -- for no particular reason since she couldn't make the case -- the review gets moved from Lacy's judicial review office to the FBI. Suddenly the FBI agent Lacy starts dating takes over and Lacy's failed case against a judge becomes a massive RICO case worth billions of dollars. In 40 pages he and his team turn witnesses, get indictments, arrest mobsters and the corrupt judge, and generally save the day. Meanwhile Lacy turns to her brother -- a man! -- to fly her and the "mole" to a safe house out of state instead of making the case herself.

In short, the strong female protagonist is actually a weak investigator who can't get the job done and runs away while the real investigation is taken up by men. Very disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice premise but boring novel
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2017

The novel starts out excellently well. A judge is corrupt, and frightened, secretive people want to bring him her down. Who are these frightened people? The case involves gambling on an Indian reservation, perhaps a large mafia ring, and potentially colorful locations in the southern US. A murder occurs early on. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately not. The characters are cardboard cutouts, one learns nothing about the potentially interesting Indian reservation and society, and one location just blends into the next. For the last 10-20 percent of the book I was sure that something exciting and unexpected would happen, but it did not. The ending just dragged on and on. I would not recommend buying this book. It was good enough to finish (fast tracking through the last sections) but not good enough to recommend to anyone else.

The most usual and important element in a Mystery/Thriller novel is the unpredictable suspect of the story, which make the reader excited to finish reading the novel in order to know the suspect and how it would end for all the major characters in the story. While we can keep guessing during the reading about the suspect, the end always is so surprisingly unexpected. In this novel (The Whistler) by Mr. John Grisham; from the beginning of the story, we knew already who is the suspect along with his gang, which make the reader bored and lose the exciting mystery element while predicting the rest of the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars It takes 130 pages to get good.

I am a huge John Grisham fan...but this one was hard to get through. I have read every single one of his books, and this is the first time that I actually did not want to finish one. However, I decided that since he is one of my favorite authors, I would finish it no matter what. And I did. But it was, at times, painful.

For over a hundred pages I kept thinking, "There is NOTHING happening in this book. It is SO unbelievably BORING."

The main characters investigate shady judges, and for the first chunk of the book, they are basically talking to someone who is giving them information on a female judge. Page after page of long explanations about the background of the shady villains and the casinos and the money and the blah blah blah...zzzzzzzzzzz. It seemed like they would have a boring conversation with him, and then leave. And then they'd meet up with him again, and have another conversation. And this goes on for 129 pages.

The reason I gave this book a 2-star review is because it does get better. Finally, on page 129, something happens. It changes the course of the story and all of a sudden we have some interesting stuff going on. If you can make it to that page, then you'll find something resembling a normal Grisham novel. And the story stays pretty interesting after that, even though there are still scenes of more long, boring explanations. The epilogue is particularly painful.

Before I read this, my least favorite Grisham book was Gray Mountain. I still go back and forth as to which one I like less. And even though there is some good stuff in here (after page 129, of course)...I think I'd still have to say this one is my least favorite.

Initially I enjoyed the book very much, but about halfway through almost all character development and storyline stopped and it became a simple procedural. I hope the next book in the series picks up where this one left off and continues to develop the characters and had a fully flushed out story.

I wait anxiously each time Mr. Grisham releases a new book and I thoroughly enjoy them like no other. But, The Whistler had me shaking my head after the first 7 chapters. It was BORING! I actually felt guilty thinking that I would actually abandon one of his books. So, I kept trying it and there was no improvement. I then came to the Amazon website to see other reviews and now know that I am not alone. I have always pre-ordered his books without hesitation, but for now on I will wait for the initial reviews to see if it is worth the money. Maybe he has just begun to settle into retirement. But, he shouldn't have his devoted readers shell out cash for such poor product. Just stop writing if that is what you really want to do.
