5.0 out of 5 starsWebb is Exceptional in the First of the new Legacy Series โ€“ this is a Must Read!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on November 4, 2016
This is the first in the series following on from the Legacy FLEET Trilogy, which saw Tim Granger and his crew battle the Swarm as they tried to destroy humanity. Eventually Granger was able to defeat them, but at the cost of billions of lives, not just human, but Alien as well. This story picks up over 50yrs later, when a new threat has been discovered.
With Granger gone, the IDF turn to Shelby, now in her 70s, but a living legend after having fought next to Granger for so long, and with her expertise on all things Xeno.
Webb has taken the image from the front cover of the magnificent starship, and given it life with his words. He has then taken it to war with a new enemy and given us a brand new and entertaining story that you will not be able to put down.
As well as Admiral Shelby Proctor being back, there are a few other old faces (the best being Ballsy, but there are a few oldies), and so I donโ€™t give up spoilers, I won't give names, there are a lot of new characters to carry the flag.
And they do it well. Webb has done a wonderful job of transferring from his original trilogy to this series without having to drag out a retirement village like the latest Star Wars movie, or giving us a completely new cast to get used to. Instead there is a great mix, and Proctor in the middle firing curses at anybody and everybody to keep them on their toes.
Webb uses his real life Science background to provide a backing for giving us some awesome tech in these books that is realistic, well described, and not so drawn out that you start flipping ahead. He also introduces some really interesting concepts that he can actually back with real science, and again, in an understandable way. This makes his books both interesting and readable, giving them an edge over some of the others.
Overall Legacy Fleet was an exceptional Series, and was one of my favourite, and this is a brilliant addition. I canโ€™t wait for Defiance.
If you enjoyed the Legacy Fleet series, you will love this. This is Webb at his best, and should not be missed.

Why is the Swarm coming back. Why can't it be another alien race bent on our destruction? Also Generals don't command fleets, Admirals do. Why is it you can't decide if Mullins is a General or an Admiral. Get it together man.

Congratulations to Nick Webb for this amazing series. Itโ€™s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. Iโ€™m really looking forward to the next book!

Some of these stories start out rough and I'm tempted to stop even if I always finish the book, but go on to the next? Then by the time I'm done, I've bought the next... Until I've finished the series. I just wished it could be more pg-13. Really don't need some of that crap in the story. It would lose nothing without it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, complex story-line set in an interesting future universe

Independence, the first book in a new series set in the Legacy universe, had a good balance in building the story, character development, action and introducing new characters into the Legacy universe time-line. Independence is set some 30 years after the events in the third book of the first series and of course the heroes of that series are a whole lot older. Former Admiral and hero of the Swarm War, Shelby Proctor is called out of retirement to deal with a new alien threat to United Earth and her colonies. A seemingly industructable ship is destroying colonies, fleet ships and generally creating near panic throughout the UE. More concerning for Shelby is her nephew Danny has disappeared and it is looking increasingly likely he is connected to submersive elements that are seeking to destabilize United Earth's government. I found Independence entertaining and I really felt drawn into the complex plot-lined and what was happening with the characters - looking forward to the next in the series :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good one.

This story takes place around 30 years after the previous book in this series. Captain Tim Granger is still, for all intents and purposes, falling into a black hole having just passed the event horizon. His action was a key part of the victory over the Swarm. Humanity has begun a new religion - The Grangerites - where Tim is God's messenger. Admiral Shelby Proctor has been called back to active duty because a new threat. There is also a bit of political unrest as the United Earth government begins to crumble. And so it goes - lots of action, space battles, friends gained and lost. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book with a few issues

The start of the book is a bit off putting. One expected a very close continuation to the last series however a lot of time has gone. The author's introduction to this concept definitely leaves a lot to be desired. However once the book picks up steam it becomes enjoyable, which is almost midway in the book. It definitely makes you work for the good parts. I lacks a little of the polish of the other books but I assume it had to be completed in a shorter time frame. There is a person called Qwerty I found that that cheapened the delivery as it broke immersion for me. I was flabbergasted that an author would call a character that maybe it is just me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mystery

A mystery inside of a mystery, what could be better. I normally have books and movie endings figured out quickly. But these stories have enough twist that you are still surprised in the end.
