I was liking the series pretty well through the third book; for light space opera cash cow sci-fi it really wasn't bad. This one isn't very good.
Webb changes tone drastically in Independence, choosing to insert uncharacteristic sexual references and profanity-- not for realism, but for bulk, I feel. Sexuality and cursing certainly have their place in fiction, but Webb brings no passion of his own to their depiction here, and both come across as squalid and tiresome. It's not authorly.
I was trusting Webb to do better than this, and I will not be going on with the series. However, many readers will find the book and the storyline engaging enough, and having seen worse, will not mind the drab graffiti so much.
