CAUTION TO KINDLE BUYERS:

I clicked to purchase the Kindle version of this book. The ISBN on Amazon's page was listed as 9780131863897 (which is what I needed per my school's bookstore listing). It wasn't until the start of this term that I realized that the Kindle version is an international version of some kind (ISBN is listed in the book as 9788131713662).

But since I'm here, this book is terrible. It's not straightforward at all, and not friendly to anyone new to the world of logic/design. If you're stuck using this book, I recommend writing down key words, ideas, phrases, etc. and just searching for sites online.

What they don’t tell you if you buy the kindle version is that it’s an Indian copy which is different from the actual version. This is pretty ridiculous.

International Edition, bait and switch scam. Caveat emptor!

Don't get tricked into buying this textbook, you won't end up getting what is shown here. The cover shown here is a normal US edition but I ended up getting a international edition. The seller even tried to hide the fact by putting a sticker on the cover covering up the international edition label on the front. When I found this out I tried to ask amazon to get a refund, which they allowed me to receive if I sent the book back. However, by the terms of the refund I had the ship the textbook back to the seller by a date which was about a week away. After looking up shipping rates to New Delhi, I realized that the cost for getting the book back on time would be about the same as the cost of a new book. Don't pay full price for this book if you want an international edition and if you want a US edition and if you want a US edition don't get scammed like I did.

The paperback version is printed only for the Indian market and is extremely poor quality. I'm not sure why this is being sold in the US. I ended up buying the hard-bound version because it is such a great book. Now I can actually read it!

Hopeless - I agree with the 1 star reviewers

This book is hopeless. The explanations he uses for simple concepts are ridiculously over complicated, convoluted and extremely long winded for the subjects at hand. Concepts which can be clearly explained in 1/3 of a page in other books take 2 and 3 pages at best and often leave the reader more confused at the end. Sometimes you feel that he goes on and on, overly complicating the subject just to try to impress on you that he has a mastery of the subject matter, which obviously he does. This happens time after time in his code examples. A 'text book' understands that its readers are students who are in the process of learning the subject matter. The standard methodology of a 'text book' is to cover bit by bit and fully explain each and every concept related to that bit of subject matter. If the author uses examples to explain the subject matter, then the information within the example needs to use concepts and information which the student is already familiar with. Otherwise, what's the point?

This author's coding examples are packed full of advanced coding practices which the student isn't familiar with yet and which the author doesn't explain in the text, leaving the student stumped and frustrated. The student then has to continually Google the terms and methods the author is using. This isn't the way to write a text book. A text book should be black and white and state to the student 'this is how you do this' in clear concise terminology. Otherwise the text book is useless, just like this one.

Buying this book for your own personal reference isn't a good idea. There are a lot of other books which cover this material in a much simpler and straightforward manner.

Pretentious Over-complicated Crap

Exactly like the title says, this is the worst textbook I have ever had the displeasure of trying to wade my way through. The author constantly assumes that you know high level concepts which, if he introduces at all, does so in only a cursory manner. He over-complicates ideas and concepts to the point that you actually start believing that this is challenging material. The way he presents the material is dry and long-winded, and zomgwalloftextsnore....

Don't waste your money! Go buy Floyd's Digital Fundamentals instead. The material in that book is identical but presented in a much clearer manner (with COLORED diagrams for Pete's sake). Or at least check it out from the library. Just don't expect to learn anything from Wakerly.

My Professor used to teach with the Floyd book and said he never had any students who had trouble with the class until some course equivalency with our local University forced him to change books to this pile of crap. I'm so glad he said that. I thought I was just having trouble understanding the material. NO!!! The second I started reading Floyd everything made sense. This book was confusing everything I was learning in class to the point that I thought I would flunk.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME! You're better off reading Wikipedia articles than this bloated dead fish.

Worst class textbook for an introductory course I've ever held

HORRIBLE book for beginners... Look up words in the index and you are brought to text which is assuming you already know what they are. It doesn't define a damn thing in the entire book.

Here's a direct quote on the first mention of "Multiplexers" ...:

"Seldom does the size of an MSI Multiplexer match the characteristics of the problem at hand. Even in ASIC design, multiplexers are not always available in arbitrary sizes, and it is necessary for the designer to make a large multiplexer from a collection of smaller ones."

There is no mention of what a multiplexer is anywhere in the book and there's no references in the index to it that define it either. There is no mention in that entire chapter or the previous ones about what it actually is.

It hints at things, it doesn't teach... I guess the author thought that you would be jumping up and down at a mention of every shiny new device and would read between the lines with your engines roaring ready to decrypt meaning. This is not a book for students.

It also doesn't read like a textbook at all. There are minimal walkthrough examples. The textbook problems have no answers handy and are in forms completely not addressed by the book.

I can't say enough bad things about this book. I might have to burn it after this course for closure.

This book really sucks at teaching you anything. When I do the homework, I spend most of my time google just to find out how to do something. When I find it on google i completely understand what to do. I look it up in the book and there like 5 pages on the subject which I have no idea what he is talking about and does not help in doing the homework.
