5.0 out of 5 starsTheories (Lady Archer's Creed Book 1)

I enjoyed the historical quality as well as the chemistry among the main characters. I like that it was told from the perspective of both Theo and Alistaire, and that It did not require any graphic sexual content to enjoy the storyline.

1.0 out of 5 starsDon’t waste your time or money on this book!
Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2021
This book was horrible on so many levels. First of all, it wasn’t entertaining. No humor, no light-hearted scenes. Most of the scenes and dialogue comprise the characters arguing, fighting and shouting at each other. How unappealing. The author went on ad nauseum about archery explanations and mathematical equations to be an exceptionally accurate archer, as well as an excessive amount of time spent on maps and the heroine’s supposed desire to spend her life in mapmaking. I doubt very seriously global warming and ice melting from glaciers was written about to the extent this author makes it appear in the early 1800s. Again, the focus on archery tips & maps was excessive and too much like reading a history book. I love history but this was downright boring. One of the side characters, Adeline, seemed to have more written about her than the main character, Theodora. Her excessively bratty character spoiled the book in my opinion. On top of that, the characters were so awfully portrayed as out of control, extremely arrogant or dictatorial that it was hard to embrace or like any of them. The story plodded along from one odious scene to another. There is no way I will recommend this book, nor will I ever read anything else by this author. Don’t waste your time.

Excellent clean historical romance. I enjoyed the banter between Theo and Alistair. The storyline is good and moves at a rate that keeps the reader interested. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much introspection
Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2021

I liked the book cover synopsis of Theodora by Christina McKnight, so I ignored the iffy reviews and went ahead and downloaded it.

I very much liked intrepid and free-thinking Theodora, and I even kind of liked the three finishing school roommates. Sadly, as soon as Alastair made his appearance, the remainder of the book began to go slowly downhill. I use the word slow for a reason. The amount of introspection and detailed descriptions were a major factor in slowing the progress of each scene. Molasses runs down a cold wall faster. By the time I reached what was a decent ending, I was more than ready to remove this read from my Kindle app.

Content 411: This is a clean read that is free of swearing and sex.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story, but.....

It became VERY difficult to read the farther I got into the book. You REALLY need a better proof-reader or type setter or something. The misspelled words or incorrect wording was so rampant in this book, as I said, it made it very difficult to read. That is the reason it only received 3 stars instead of the 5 I would have given it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

Disappointing at best. Poorly describes Regency England, the clothing, and the formality between the sexes. Regency males knew not to close a door with a young lady. They would not have removed their jacket in a lady’s presence. That would have comprised an inappropriate degree of undress. Even the dress the heroine wears on the cover is not Regency attire. It looks like something a Gypsy might have worn. The The story is so outlandish that I finally quit struggling to read it about halfway through it. I expected more from this author. I gave it a 3 because I have a policy to never leave lower than a 3.

I did not finish the book. I am sick of this plot! Another smarmy supposed gentleman threatened to harm family or friends to force a woman to marry him.

This book was a rather hot mess.
We started out back in the past, experiencing Theo's first day at the school where she met the other three heroines of this series. The author describes the 'selection process' for rooms overly thoroughly, never explains the significance. Then we are several years in future, the ladies are preparing for their first season & cooked up some scheme to be in an archery contest.
Long story short, I never felt a true closeness between the girls, and didn't really grow to like any of them. The heroes rude and overbearing. Out of nowhere, he was gushing his love for the main character. The plot was very jumpy and the book never really allowed good character development. I never became attached to any of the characters.
I won't read additional books in this series or by this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fiction, yes, historical romance, not so much
Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2022

This story was not quite to my liking. It reads like a feminist on a soap box; like women have something to prove, and that's the problem entirely. It is spilling over with insecurity because of trying so hard for recognition. . .from men. The portrayal of their "strong" women comes over like an arrogant immature brat in Adeline and the headstrong not-thinking-things-through type in Theodora.

Theodora may be intelligent and have enlightening ideas but lacks insight for consequences and resolve for tackling the predicament with Gladstone that she walked right into!

The whole idea of wearing hooded cloaks in the archers competition and the imminent "danger" of being recognized and then caving to "blackmail" at being discovered borders on ridiculous.

The attitude of the story does not seem to fit the period, but comes across as an attempt to rewrite the period. The only historical elements are horse and carriage and gowns basically. It appears no research was done to actually weave historical events into the story to make the reader experience the time period. Character development could be greatly improved. This story just did not flow smoothly and the plot falls flat for me.

Yes the book was clean - free of sex and swearing. That is in its favour. However, it's been a long time since I read a book that I couldn't wait to end. Not to see what was going to happen, but just for it to end. The main characters, Theodora and Alistair, weren't bad, but Adeline was a spoilt, selfish brat! The other two were there, but blended in like flowers on wallpaper. And as for the horde of siblings - they all sounded like they needed a good dose of discipline. Not my favourite book.
