4.0 out of 5 starsGreat read!

Great read. I have been a avid fan of Harffy's ever since reading the first book in this series The serpent sword. This is a great book about the Saxon people who have settled in England and gives a good glimpse into the violent and hard times that were the early dark ages of England, before King Alfred the great. The story is told through the eyes of Beobrand a young warrior who comes to Northumbria to from Kent. This particular book is the 4th in the series. You definitely want to start with the first, Serpent sword. Anyways this book finds Beo riding south from Northubria on a errand for his king through hostile territory, this book like the first three is full of action, blood feuds and the roaring clash of the shield wall and it grabs your attention from beginning to end. I really enjoy his development of the main character Beobrand and how Beo is constantly at odds with his inner demon his anger, temper and quickness to resort to violence with out thinking of the consequences, and how he fears that he is just like his father was, a mean bully who loved to hurt people, and that he will become just like him or maybe he already is just like him. Anyways this is a action packed story of the sword song and about a blood feud and how far some will go to claim it. If you enjoy Bernard Cornwell then you will love this series!

3.0 out of 5 starsInteresting story, distracting use of language

this is a tale about a little known period of English history. It seems to be part of a series, but I have not read anything else by this author. I have to confess my irritation at the way the author makes his characters speak. They just don't seem genuine and it is distracting . I assume the author has spent some time researching the words and spelling, and I am sure some of it is authentically used. But some of it isn't quite right at all.

This is one of the most addictive, page turning historical fiction series I've ever read. The characters' emotions are felt by the reader, and the suspenseful and realistically written battle scenes are top notch.

I liked all the books and enjoyed them, this is my favorite time in historical novels. I just wished that the author didn't contently repeat what Beobrand was thinking all the time, yes, we know he felt guilty about leaving his gethisa or everything else, it felt like the author was trying to fill up chapters even at a critical point seconds before a battle "did I make a mistake being here well its too late now. All and all enjoyed books! They are a fast read.

Beobrand rides far in this fourth book in the series, and of course fights in the shield wall again.
Blood is spilled, loss ensues, friendships grow stronger, blood feuds take another turn.
The time period was one I knew little about when I began the series, but by now it is much more familiar. Beobrand and his following are a window to a fiercer time, yet people are people and the longing for revenge, God, and love still remain.
Please do yourself a favor and read this series!

Another great page turner and a favorite new character Baobrand I especially enjoyed how some of the past issues were resolved in this story. In my estimation Baobrand is up there with Uhtred of Bebbanburg, Blood Eye, Sigurd, and Hereward from other series I have enjoyed. I appreciate the work the author has done and thank him for an enjoyable read.

I'm a relatively new reader of Matthew Harffy's books, but I am so glad I found his work. The Bernicia Chronicles feature historical accuracy, excellent depictions of day-to-day life as well as period fighting techniques, and wonderful characters (even if he did kill off one of my favorites). Highly recommended!

Just finished reading all four books in the series. Thoroughly enjoyed them all. Enthralling novels describing the horrors of battle and survival in medieval times interwoven with the brutality towards the treatment of women and slaves. Well written books and look forward to the fifth book.

Quarantine day 3- I have lost track of what day it is. Running low on frozen pizza. Guess I’ll just get the next book in the series and wait out the apocalypse!
