How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we donโ€™t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

David McCall
5.0 out of 5 starsWhite by another color is Black
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on March 5, 2023
I thought it would annoy me that the "White" tower is actually black, in that it conceals and encapsulates so much of this world that's evil. I thought I would find it a clichรฉ'. I was wrong. In the same way that some experiences or people seem to come to us as Angels of light, but in the end, they are darkness personified - so is the experience of all of those that come into contact with the power at the heart of this tower.

The plot twists that bring hope out of the evil and rebirth out of death are excellent - and surprising. This series and its prequel - Street Rats of Aramoor are compelling, surprising, and familiar - all at the same time. Thank you Michael for this series.

I have come to love the characters in this series and the world they live in is compelling.

It was a decent story, but not very exciting to me. It wasn't bad, but I just didn't feel too interested in it.

Also, the author brings in feminism and paints the females as always smarter and better, and always has plenty of glowing description for them, while almost never for the guys, only negative description for them. So typical these days

1.0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy the pain of others then look no further

This would be an enjoyable story without the ridiculous amount of time dedicated to torture and pain. Battles have very little of any tactics or strategy but plenty of gore. About 20% of the page count seems to be very detailed scenes of torture/interrogations. It is very rare that I do not finish a book that I start, but I put this one down after about 3/4 of the book and will definitely never read anything by this author again. Hard to believe how well-rated this story is but I also don't get why people slow down to look at accidents...
Without the egregious torture it's a fairly average fantasy story with enough of a twist on magic system to make it at least fairly original and some likeable if rather flat characters. As other reviews have mentioned I found the editing to be rather poor, with lots of obvious errors. Besides all of the pain and suffering I would say 3-3.5 stars

You can hear the author speaking over the narrator screaming โ€œ because plot armor thatโ€™s whyโ€
Character with lifetimes of experience donโ€™t know how do there jobs. Half trained children are better than adults with a literal life time of training. If it was a movie you would be able to see the script overlay across the screen. Utter trash

I honestly couldn't get past the first 200 pages. So very predictable. And the extended torture scene, ugh. It feels like it was written in the 1980s. People who are into this kind of torture porn are in the minority!
Spare the rest of us that are interested in character development and solid plot lines.

1.0 out of 5 stars Editing needed desperately!

This book would have been very much better with some editing. Paragraphs were repeated and there were many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, for example, โ€œboyโ€ used instead of โ€œbowโ€.
In addition, there is a jarring combination of โ€œoldโ€ epic fantasy themes and settings, with modern day thoughts and ideas, and in some cases the language used just didnโ€™t feel right.
I really wanted to love this book...I bought it with great anticipation especially as there were so many good reviews. Unfortunately I could only read it in stop-start mode, as it took me a few days each time to get over the irritating mistakes and the language vs theme incongruencies before I could take it up again. Perhaps it was only the kindle version which was so riddled with editing issues. *Sigh*

1.0 out of 5 stars Too much torture and uninteresting characters

I gave it some hope after reading the prequel (which I thought was decent). But the jumping from one character set to another - never game me any reason to care about any of the characters.

When I found myself fast forwarding through several pages of information โ€” simply because we were starting out a new chapter with yet another set of new characters โ€” I thought, "If you're not going to read it, why don't you find another book?"

That and the realization that the book seems to spend about 20% of the focus running from one form of torture to another. And the dialog felt childish or maybe akin to a comic bookย โ€” you know over the top and simplistic at the same time?

Just not for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed

The mind numbing simple writing style and over elaboration of details that don't matter kept me from completing book. Half way through and I can no longer tolerate it. I believe this is better suited for young adults and if someone 40+ can finish this book, they have incredible willpower. And some of the lines in this book, like, "Her heart was panting...blah blah blah" made me want to punch something because it's like the author is clueless. I cannot, by any stretch of my imagination, understand the abundance of 5 star ratings for this book.

The writing felt clunky, the characters flat, and the plot felt pointless. I wanted to enjoy this book, but only made it to chapter 11.

I'm trying so hard to read and like this book, but: "There was slight chill to the morning air as the last of the leaves had relinquished their stubborn hold on life." followed by " Autumn was coming to an end and winter was just around the corner"..........REALLY????? I'm finding almost nothing original about the story so far - if I can convince myself to pick it up again, perhaps I'll find something.

Clearly being pushed by Amazon. Poor writing, uneven characters, and plot lines that are very shallow. Feels like a collection of National Enquirer headlines and stories
