Solid Story Telling

Possibly one of the best fantasy / sci-fi novels I have ever read. Ben Counter flawlessly delivers story telling at it's most raw, archetypal, and powerful. I felt like I was sitting at a campfire in a Chaos marauder camp, listening to the stories of "the Last", the hero of the immaterium, and of the corrupt planet featured in the story. I am not sure how he pulled it off, but somehow Counter shows a master sorcerer running from Word Bearers, and a primitive barbarian tribe taking on the Emperor's Children with nothing but axes and arrows. It's a story that wouldn't work in today's all-to-often sloppy story telling, and most writers wouldn't know what to do with such creative material of the 40k universe. Yet Counter paints a timeless story that highlights some of the best and most perverse sides of humanity, and what the path to power can do to us all. 10/10 story telling, and I thankful to find such skillful writing in 40k literature.
