5.0 out of 5 starsLoved Spence & Colbie's romance
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 12, 2018
Chasing Christmas Eve revolves around two workaholics who hold tightly to their secrets… perhaps too tight.y in the end. While there is plenty of Christmas touches and celebrations in this story I wouldn’t call it a Christmas romance. This is purely Spence and Colbie’s romance that just happens to have a Christmas Eve deadline.

Thanks to a kitten and a rambunctious dog, Colbie and Spence’s first meeting is a rather spectacular splash into the wishing fountain. And just that quickly two strangers make a connection that neither can explain. Oh, it’s not instant love but definitely instant attraction with the feeling that there could be more if, and it’s a huge if, they let down their guard walls.

Colbie has run away from home – so to speak. She’s a hugely popular YA author with a movie premiere of one of her books coming up soon. She’s supposed to be doing promotional work, and writing an additional story for this series that in her mind is done. And she’s facing a massive writer’s block. So she ran away from home hoping to find her muse once again away from the deadlines and the constant tending to her small family. Since her father left Colbie’s mother has pretty much let her take over the reins of the house and her younger twin brothers upbringing. They all depend on Colbie far too much to the point of being unable to function without her guidance. Everyone needs to put on their big pants here and grow up but that’s far from easy and constantly on Colbie’s mind. So while San Francisco might not have been Colbie’s first run away destination, it’s soothing to simply be herself here and not that famous author or the one who holds the household together. Here she can just be Colbie – even if that does mean she keeps secrets from some people and one man who could mean everything to her.

Spence is a super genius who is holding on to some secrets of his own. He is under the impression that he can either focus on his work or his personal life – trying to mix the two has always meant that one part loses, in a damaging to the other way. He’s on a deadline for his invention that will do some real good for a lot of needy people but he’s stuck and it’s driving him insane. The last thing he needs is a romantic entanglement, especially one with an expiration date of Christmas Eve, when Colbie will return home to Boston. For once, Spence is finding that he can separate work and personal, and while it might not be easy it is doable. Now he has to convince Colbie to give up her secrets, and let her into his before it’s too late… but it might already be beyond his control.

Chasing Christmas Eve has everything I love about the Heartbreaker Bay series going for it. Everyone needs a bunch of tight knit friends like Spence has, even when they work counter to his wishes in the guise of protecting him. The bantering and teasing as always is fun and comfortable, the laugh out loud moments were some of the best moments of Colbie and Spence’s story. Learning to trust, whether it’s someone else or yourself, is never easy. There is a scene with Colbie and Spence’s female friends that simply broke my heart. It’s hard to be the outsider, especially one that hasn’t opened up to who they really are so that others can trust them with a precious friend. We have a few suspicions confirmed, and a lot of catching up with previous couples as they are now. This is a story that I would recommend to any Romance reader. It’s a strong, caring addition to this series and is definitely on my re-read shelf for the future.

I own a Kindle edition of this story.

3.0 out of 5 starsApparently I'm super picky...

3 stars -- Hmmm...this is going to be a hard review to write, b/c I just wasn't that sucked into this book, but I'm not entirely sure what didn't work for me.  I'll try, but it might have been that my mood exacerbated things, kwim?  Also, I think I *wanted* to like this one more than I actually did.  Now, I haven't read all the previous books in this series, only Willa's and the two Christmas novellas.  So perhaps that might have bumped it up a bit, but it also might have disappointed me even more...who's to say.

OK, I'm going to warn right at the beginning that this is going to sound like a negative review, but it really was a cute romance...solid, easy, with some fun interactions and a great cast of secondary characters.  And I did give this 3 stars, so it's a solid book.  It just didn't wow me, and that's probably what's going to come across most strongly in the rest of this review.  I just wanted to caveat that so people take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

So, hmmm...  Well, I was pretty excited about Spence, even if I've only seen him in brief in Willa's book.  I'm a sucker for a geek, as I married my own hot geek.  And Spence was a cutie, though I could have used a bit more awkwardness.  I will admit I read another review that talked about how he was perfectly carved, just like all the other heroes, even though we never see him exercise in this book, and I will admit that bugged me too.  Not every hero has to have the perfect body to be swoonworthy, I think I was kind of hoping he would be more normal...  Kind of a weird thing to be disappointed in, but there you go.  Maybe I just want a bit more variety in my heroes, and I was disappointed because I thought Spence would give me that.  I also really expected to learn more about his upbringing that led him to buy the Pacific Pier Building and populate it with his own little small town.  And it's not that we didn't get any of his past, it just was kind of underwhelming I guess.  He was poor.  Huh.  But he had loving parents...I expected him to be neglected or something with the way he shied away from love and built his own little family.  So that was...disappointing.  And yeah, we get bits with his Grandpa and all, and then a bit about his attempted love life, but I guess it just felt like bare bones, and not enough to really suck me in and empathize with him.  He was so mysterious in Willa's book, keeping a lot about who he was hidden (owner of the building, rich, etc).  So I was expecting a lot more.  But maybe that was me.  And I was initially excited about Eddie, but then that kind of fizzled, and we never got any closure with that.  *sigh*

Then we get Colbie.  Some of her story bugged me because the author employed the "keep secrets from the reader" thing that I really dislike...in this case about what happened with Jackson.  I expected something really huge because it was kept secret for so much of the book, and then it was like oh.  That's it?  Which just flared my pet peeve again.  I guess I want a big payoff if I'm going to put up with the reader secret stuff.  I did love seeing all the little writer quirks about her, and she had such a good nature in general...she seemed really sweet and eager for affection.  But as with Spence, her background disappointed me.  Her family sounded atrocious, just a big bunch of users who didn't respect and appreciate her at all.  But then we get to the ending, and it was like an about face in a teeny amount of time, and it was NOT believable at all.  Though at least I still hated her Mom, even though apparently she didn't.  The ending to Colbie's family story was MEGA disappointing basically.

And then we get to the two of them together.  They could be really cute, and had some really great moments (I loved his failed picnic on the boat, and when he took her flying drones).  But in reality, I didn't really get enough of them together that wasn't about the sex.  Which is fine, I like steamy scenes.  But I didn't really understand their emotional connection I guess.  It was infatuation at first sight for both of them, but without much explanation for why, for example, Colbie was different from other women.  There was a bit, but not enough for me.  It all just felt very basic to me...I wasn't captured.  And for the short amount of time they had together, they didn't actually spend a whole lot of time together...they both worked quite a bit.  Which was good for their personal stories I guess, but then I kind of wanted to know more there...like why didn't Spence ponder why Colbie was different from other women, and he was suddenly able to balance.  *sigh*  I'm so freaking picky you guys...it's annoying sometimes.  I wasn't even that excited with the epilogue, it felt fast too.

I did love the moments with our secondary cast...they were delightful as usual.  In some ways, those were the highlights of the book.  I'm going to go back and catch up on the books I missed (Finn/Pru and Archer/Elle), and depending on how I like those, I can see wanting to read about Joe and Kylie as well.

So see what I mean?  That was a totally negative sounding review.  *sigh*  I'm not good at balance I don't think.  Oh well.

Very good book. I loved the characters, not the usual perfect, gorgeous men. Collie and Spence were awesome and it wasn’t the typical story. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you don’t need to chase love

I really do believe that finding your perfect match doesn’t just involve love, lust and attraction. I think that tolerance is one of the biggest components of a successful relationship. You can be seriously attracted to someone but the smell of their feet will turn you off. Sexual attraction can be rampant but their constant humming could send you over the edge. Loving someone who is good and kind could mean absolutely nothing if they pick their toe nails then flick the contents at your coffee cup (GROSS!!). Tolerance plays a huge part because if you love someone you put up with the gross stuff. Or, you share your disgust with the gross stuff and work together to fix/avoid the smelly feet, humming and picking toe nails. If they love you, they will willingly work towards not grossing you out.

Now, tolerance with family…that’s a different story. You’re kind of obliged to be tolerant when it comes to family members. The thing is though, with family, your tolerance could falter, and that’s OK. It’s different because you won’t hesitate to tell your sister that her feet stink, and she won’t hesitate to tell you to bugger off. If your brother hums constantly, threatening his life if he does it again will not have them running for the hills scared that you might actually mean it. More than likely he’ll tell you to bugger off AND hum louder. If your Dad picks his toes…ummm…I'd tell him it's gross and then probably tell my Mum on him.

I think we put up with a lot more from family members than we do from our partners, especially in the beginning stages of a relationship. If you love someone, family or partner, you will have an unlimited amount of tolerance. I would also be trying my hardest that they don’t need to use it if the situation was reversed.

Sometimes your perfect match is the person who doesn’t need tolerance to put up with the things you do that drive others crazy. The right person gets you, works with you and finds a way to make your issues work for them. Besides the toe picking, that's just gross.

I’ve rambled BIG TIME!! How bloody unusual.

I absolutely loved Chasing Christmas Eve. Colbie and Spence were the perfect matches for each other. In previous relationships, Spence forgot to make his partner a priority and instead focused on his work. Colbie didn’t have a lot of experience with previous relationships because her family and her job as a writer were her main focus. Neither Spence nor Colbie was happy and realised they were missing something important in their life. Turns out that they just needed each other.

This story made me laugh, cry and squirm. The Heartbreaker Bay gang are back and I loved catching up with them. I was a little sad for Colbie at times as she seemed to have lived a pretty lonely life up till meeting Spence. His good intentions led to Colbie feeling like a loser and all I wanted to do is climb into the book to give her a hug…and give Elle a kick up the butt. The sexy times for Colbie and Spence were steamy and sweet and I definitely felt the connection between them.

There’s just something magical about Jill Shalvis’s writing that leaves me satisfied. I always finish with a smile on my face and believe that the couple was meant to be. Chasing Christmas Eve was amazing and I think this is her best book…since the last one. 😉

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic holiday romance

Chasing Christmas Eve was the perfect holiday read with a spectacular romance and a fantastic group of characters.

Colbie Albright needs an escape from her life so she hops on the next available flight which takes her to San Francisco. Taking care of her family while writing a bestselling YA series has certainly taken its toll and San Francisco seems like the perfect solution. Unfortunately upon arrival she’s knocked into a historic fountain by an oversize dog but is thankfully rescued by an attractive stranger. Spencer Baldwin avoids relationships at all cost, so he’s not worried about the intense chemistry he has with Colbie. It also doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the next couple of weeks before Colbie heads home, but neither of them expected how hard and how fast they’d fall for each other.

Colbie is a very genuine and caring person with a great sense of humor. She has spent her entire life taking care of her younger brothers and mother after her father walked out on them. I had a hard time liking Colbie’s family as I felt they constantly were taking advantage of her. Colbie is the author of a very successful YA series that has an upcoming movie adaptation and she’s under a lot of pressure to write more in the series.

Spence has always had trouble dating as he has a tendency to lose himself in his work. Spence doesn’t believe he’s capable of being successful both personally and professionally as others in his family tend to only succeed in one aspect. Due to his successes in his work life, Spence has made a name for himself in the tech world and after an article about him releases, he’s hounded by strangers who only want him for his money.

Colbie and Spence have an immediate connection despite both of them being reluctant to get involved with anyone. They both feel instantly at ease with one another despite being complete strangers, but that’s not to say they don’t still keep secrets. Both Colbie and Spence have been hurt in the past and it does take time for them to fully open up. Their relationship is filled with a ton of banter and flirting which I absolutely loved. Their physical chemistry is amazing and the sex scenes are wonderfully done with the perfect amount of steaminess.

The couples from the previous books in the series returned in this book which was wonderful as I love the characters of this series. The friendship all of the characters have is phenomenal. I love how supportive they are of one another and it’s obvious how much they all care about each other. It was interesting seeing Colbie interact with the group as she’s very much an outsider, but I felt she fit into the group pretty well.

I absolutely loved Chasing Christmas Eve and I can’t wait to continue on with the rest of the series soon. I definitely recommend this series if you’re looking for a contemporary romance series with a great group of characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars - 'Chasing Christmas Eve' by Jill Shalvis

I finally got a chance to finish reading Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis, which happens to be the fourth book in the Heartbreaker Bay series. I wanted to finish reading it before 2018, but family was in town, so it was left on my nightstand until I could finish it. I’m thankful for my family letting me finish it the first weekend of 2018 without any interruptions. Maybe there was one interruption, but all I had to do was the evil stare and they left me be to finish enjoying Spence’s and Colbie’s book.

I was happy that Spence got his HEA in Chasing Christmas Eve and I also was happy he found a girl with similarities like him. Colbie and Spence definitely know how to not have a love life, when they work all the time or take others more than themselves.

Colbie has to get away from her family that is dependent on her, so she can finally get back to enjoying her job as a writer. She has a book to write, so she decides to run away from New York and head somewhere else. Her original destination doesn’t happen, so she ends up in San Francisco. Her first day there, she ends up in the fountain soaking wet by a dog that put her in there. She ends up also meeting Spence who happens to be dreamy and is the one walking the dog. She’s supposed to be there to get away from it all, but ends up meeting the one guy that brings out a spark in her that she didn’t know she had.

Spence is the rich inventor guy of his group of crazy lovable friends. He’s unfortunately in the spotlight thanks to so-called friend putting him out there in the press and now all the ladies want to be with him. He’s a rich, good-looking, very successful guy, so girls are definitely wanting to be with him, but he’s not trying to be with them. He never though he would meet the girl that changed his view of life, until he meets Colbie. He also starts realizing it acts like someone his family, he’s trying to end up like.

Jill Shalvis definitely wrote an interesting story with these two. Spence who happens to be a workaholic ends up becoming different in the story due to Colbie. Let’s not forget Spence’s friends are very protective, especially Elle. If you didn’t read the previous book of this series then it’s a must because you’ll understand why Elle is protective of her friends. One thing I enjoyed about Colbie is how quirky she was and how she didn’t curse at all. She always had something cute and funny to say, instead of cursing.

I really enjoyed Spence and Colbie, but I definitely was upset with how these two handled certain situations with each other. There were times I wanted to knock some sense in both of them. I did enjoy the ending with these two and like I said before I’m so glad Spence got his HEA. I also loved Colbie’s character because she definitely fit well with Spence and his friends.

I give this book 4 stars and recommend it to Contemporary Romance readers out there. The Heartbreaker Bay series has definitely become a favorite of mine and I’m actually diving into the next book soon.

Back at Heartbreak Bay and the gang this time it's Spencer's story. Christmas + Jill Shalvis always bring a good time. Colbie is an interesting heroine for sure, she's hit a writer's block so to speak and runs off to San Francisco for inspiration. Well that and some other life stuff. She can laugh at herself which is good, pretty eccentric and seemed pretty easygoing fun. Spencer has always been elusive to me you get bits of him and not the whole picture yet. His humble yet awkward beginnings, his past relationship issues to his success now.

I really have enjoyed this series and the setting one of my favorite cities makes it even better. Their meet cute was definitely one for the books, hilarious and awkward but memorable. I've always thought Spencer's allure was his hot nerdy ways and his mysterious air. Also I felt for the guy, ppl can mean. One thing I noticed this had a different feel that in the previous books in the series. There was always this some issue to get over or something that prevented the couples from getting together. Here yes that whole pesky time constraint, plus relationship woes of past for Spencer, I never felt them feel that pressure of the time or anything. I wanted that umph in their story. While that's nice change in pace and all, maybe cause it is the season, good cheer all that stuff. This story gave a vacation romance feel, setting wise I approve, it was cute and lovely.

Truly though sometimes we don't realize we are too focused on other things, we don't realize what we missing and that is the case for these two. I will say they definitely had this natural feel to their relationship, it developed from a friendship of sorts what with they had similarities they didn't realize at first. They definitely had fun, a lot of silly antics and fun swear words, feel good vibe and still had the sexy part down. I like that the author balanced the seriousness and the light hearted lol moments.

I missed the gang they are always such a great addition to any story, even with some being a pain. In classic Jill Shalvis humor things are quirky yet still tickled my funny bone. I did enjoy them as a couple they fit in their unusual ways. This kind of story is what I expect from the author easygoing, sweet, funny and sexy story with such adorably likable characters. Despite wanting more I really did enjoy this one and the relatable factor in Colbie is something that made the story have a real feel. Taking a break from it all, feeling overwhelmed isn't uncommon we all need some holiday or time off recharge. One of the best parts of this was the ending and that part left me with that Chrismasy feel.

Chasing Christmas Eve (Heartbreaker Bay book 4) by Jill Shalvis

Wow! Jill Shalvis is an amazing writer. There is something magical about her and they way she writes. Her books always leave you feeling happy and believing in the magic of love and friendship. Jill Shalvis has all the elements that make an amazing writer. I love all her books and She is one of my favorite authors.

In Chasing Christmas Eve we finally get to read Spence's story. In her previous Heartbreaker Bay novels we have read bits about Spence but nothing you've read tells who Spence really is until you read Chasing Christmas Eve.

Spencer Baldwin is a recluse. He puts everything into his work. When he works he tends to ignore everything and everyone around him. His work has become who and what he is all about. His work is his priority.

Colbie Albright lives in New York and is a writer. Most of her life she has taken care of her mom and her brother's. Writing and her family has taken up her life. Colbie ends up feeling blocked so she runs away. She ends up in San Francisco and in the courtyard of the building that Spence owns.

Chasing Christmas Eve was the best story ever. I just fell in love with both Colbie and Spence. I really loved how Spence wanted to be with her. I also loved how Spence wanted to take care of her. My heart went out to Colbie at times and just wanted to grab her hand and hug her and tell her that she is an amazing person full of talent. I really found myself getting frustrated with Elle at time. My heart really broke when I saw how lonely Colbie really was. My heart broke when I saw how much she loved her family yet how stressed she was because of them. Chasing Christmas Eve truly is an amazing read. Chasing Christmas Eve is unique from other books because it filled with love, passion, romance, friendship and hope. Chasing Christmas Eve gives you a sense of belonging. I found myself laughing and crying. There were even heart swoon worthy moments. I really felt like I could relate to some of the characters and found myself feeling like I was actually there with them. Chasing Christmas Eve was perfectly written. Just magical and sweet. Chasing Christmas Eve is now my favorite Heartbreaker Bay series book. Colbie and Spence are my favorite couple.

Jill Shalvis did an outstanding job with this book. I highly recommend this book. I give it five stars and two thumbs up.

It is a truth universally known that a book that requires the reader to immediately go request the rest of the series from the library must be rated 5 stars.

I'm pretty sure Colbie is my spirit animal (except my mom and brother aren't awful, thanks very much). I love that she's a YA author (and come on, what book blogger doesn't love a good book about a writer who is passionate about her writing?) and that she can laugh at herself. Colbie and Spence both have a self-deprecating sense of humor that I really like, and the development of their relationship was fun to read. There is a part with Spence's female friends taking Colbie to girls' night that make me cry for her, but I won't say more than that because I don't want to spoil it. Suffice it to say that Chasing Christmas Even made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me smile like a total goofball hard enough that my husband asked me what on earth I was reading that put that doofy look on my face!

Chasing Christmas Eve is the 4th book in the Heartbreaker Bay series. I didn't know that going into reading this book, but it became obvious partway through by the sheer number of supporting characters in Spence's life. I even correctly guess that it was the 4th book, based on the information that was tossed out that of Spence's Tribe there are three couples. (Take that, Sherlock!) While this is the 4th in a series, it can absolutely be read at a stand alone. There might be some minor spoilers for the earlier books, but nothing you wouldn't already know from reading the back cover blurbs. It was a little confusing trying to keep all of the side characters straight, so I pretty much just let it go and stopped caring who Elle was in relation to Archer in relation to Joe (though as I type this, I think I actually DO know that relationships, so yay?) and just focused on the main storyline and the fact that Spence has a lot of friends who care about him. I did go request books 1 and 3 from my local library to read them as well, so I suppose if I'm wrong I'll update my review to warn you of any spoilers. :) I have read the second book in the series (The Trouble With Mistletoe) and it was every bit as enjoyable as this book. :)

Smitten with Reading
4.0 out of 5 stars B+ rating...

My Review:

I've been saving this book to read for the week before Christmas and it did not disappoint.

This is a sweet, little story about two people who don't know how to achieve balance in their lives. Spence graduated from high school at 16, college at 18. He's brilliant, driven, and has no idea how to turn off his big brain when he's working on a problem with one of his many inventions. So, despite being gorgeous and wealthy, he has never been able to make a relationship work. He sees it that he can either have work or love...not both.

For Colbie, she's put herself last since she became the primary caregiver to her mother and twin brothers at the age of 6. She doesn't know how to do anything else. And since she's taking care of so many other people, she's never had room for a serious relationship. She's the impetus in this story.

With a book deadline looming, Colbie has had enough from all her outside stressors (i.e. the people in her life) and she runs away from home, ending up in San Francisco where she runs into Spencer...literally. Spencer is a caregiver...heck, this entire community is built from his need to take care of other people and build his tribe, although he can't see that as an ability to connect.

There's so much to love about this world and story. Colbie is experiencing San Francisco, so the entire book is like taking a virtual road trip. But of course the best part is this building and the occupants that live here...and we get to see all of them. I love these characters...and the setting. It just makes for a really fun read.

I also really enjoyed the relationship build between Colbie and Spencer. They flounder...big time, but they maintain that sizzling sexual chemistry throughout...and are completely honest about it which I loved, too. All of it together just made for an incredibly fun escape into a fictional world for a couple of days that I thoroughly enjoyed.
