"They let you drive now?" he said in a wondering tone of voice calibrated to get under her skin. "I leave for a couple of years and miss kitty's first steps. Did anyone take photos for the baby album I sent you?"

"It's full of pretty pictures." Holly bared her teeth at him in a caricature of a smile. "Honor is a little concerned about how I keep drawing you with your head cut off," she said in a deliberately thoughtful tone, "but an artist must follow her instincts."

FINAL DECISION: Awesome, I loved this book in a way I never expected. Feeling fresh and young and yes, even a little weird, this book's tone matched the strange, unique, and fun that make up Holly and Venom.

THE STORY: Four years ago, Holly Chang's world was fundamentally altered when she and her friends were kidnapped by a blood mad archangel. Her friends were all murdered; Holly survived but ended up changed when the archangel put "something" of himself into Holly. She gained some qualities of vampires but she is neither fully vampire nor human. In the years since her abduction, Holly has been under the observation by various members of Raphael's Seven.  Now the one who irks Holly the most, Venom, has returned to annoy her some more. Venom is a unique vampire who also possesses viper qualities and eyes. While Venom and Holly have much in common as to their abilities, they seem to rub one another the wrong way -- until someone puts a bounty on Holly to kidnap her and the "otherness" inside her seems to be asserting itself. Venom and Holly must work together to discover what actually happened to Holly four years ago.

OPINION: The problem with loving a series is that sometimes a new book doesn't live up to the hype and excitement. Having just completed a re-read of the Guild Hunter series, I had a worry in my stomach that I was too excited about Venom and Holly's story (which has its origins in the very first book). I'm so happy to report that this book exceeded all of my excited anticipation. It was so different in its voice and tone and the characters lived up to the strange and mysterious origins. Their funky, weird and quirky natures bored into my heart (ha, ha) and they are definitely one of my favorite couples in the series.

Can I admit something? I often tend to take glances at the end of books as I get distracted during the story. (It's a way of urging myself forward). This book I read cover to cover without even being tempted to read the ending. If you have similar tendencies or like to read spoilers, I urge you to let this book flow out in front of you instead. The story and relationship builds in such a wonderful fashion that I think that knowing the secrets in the ending will diminish the first-time reader experience.

Story feels young and fresh in a manner that I didn't expect. One of my all time favorite books is FIRE AND ICE by Anne Stuart. This book has a similar feel in the characters and pacing (although there is really little similarity). The characters are younger than others in the series.

Although Venom is over 350 years old, he is the youngest of the Seven and the one character who has been the most mysterious in the series. This book peels back his layers and gives us his backstory.  He's got a secret (not a deep dark one but an interesting one) that makes him adorable and perfect for Holly. Sexy and raw in a way that no one else in the Seven is, he has a different personality than I expected once his "gameface" is off.

Holly (who for a time called herself Sorrow) is quirky and funny and incredibly strong. We haven't seen her progression for a while, and it was especially satisfying to see how she has grown and struggled and managed to reinvent herself after the horror of her "Making". (I'll also confess to having a total love for Dmitri and Honor and just adored seeing them with Holly). Holly makes this book for me. Her needling of Venom as the two find the rhythm of a relationship between them. Her strength in facing the reality of what her "making" might actually mean. And her determination to keep true to herself and her humanity put me on her side from the start. Of all the characters in this series, she was the only one from the present day who was 100 percent human and normal until she was forcibly dragged into the immortal world.

The funniest part for me is that I expected the quips and arguments and the humor, but I didn't expect how heartwarming I would find their relationship. The observation that these two will grow together hit me with so many warm fuzzies. Their story is one of acceptance and appreciation and love for a person "because" of who they are rather than "despite".

The story is more focused on Holly and Venom than in normal in this series (in many ways this book and ARCHANGEL'S HEART are part of the same story) and as a result, I was simply gutted as the book reached its conclusion as no part of this series has since the very first book.  The romance between these two is uniquely their own. The two seem to find joy in annoying one another, testing one another. There is a similarity to the relationship between Ash and Janvier, but this is no repeat of that romance. Venom and Holly have an acidic sweetness that matches their natures.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book overlaps with the events in ARCHANGEL'S HEART.

CONNECTED BOOKS:  ARCHANGEL'S VIPER is the tenth book in the Guild Hunter series.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story, Ok romance
Reviewed in the United States đŸ‡ș🇾 on January 27, 2019
After I read this I didn't know what to rate this. I kept going back and forth between a 3 and 4 stars. So I've, finally, decided on rating this 3 stars. It took me 2 weeks to decide on a rating but I finally decided.

Nalini Singh is absolutely, without a doubt, one of my favorite authors. I've always been able to count on her to give me a good book to read. And that is the case with Archangel's Viper, it was a good read, even though it did take me a few weeks to actually finish this book. I adored the characters (especially Holly's family), the writing is amazing, the story was interesting...however I felt totally screwed on the romance.

Holly/Sorrow is an amazing character. I love her so much and I was ready and eager for her story. Then to pair her with Venom another character I adore...perfection!

Unfortunately the "romance" we got was more two frenemies that magically fall in love in the last 70 pages. There was some attraction between them before that but so much of the story was focused on what was going on with Holly that maybe 5% of the story, before those last 70 pages, was an erotic moment (usually Holly feeding from Venom) or a kiss or a thought, romantically, about the other person. So when the kissing, sex, and feelings started being done and mentioned it felt completely out of left field. And for the first 60% of the story Venom would mention how young she was to him, and that she was a baby compared to him (which most women, at his age, would be anyway). Sure they needled each other but it didn't seem like 'oh we have so much chemistry but I can only express that through sarcasm and barbs to each other', instead it felt more like friends who had no romantic interest in the other.

And Holly and Venom were together a lot of this book. A lot, a lot! They were searching and investigating and traveling...together...a lot...and next to nothing romantic went on, in thought or deed.

I mentioned this in one of my updates that I wondered if Holly/Venom would get the Elena/Raphael treatment of multiple books with them as the main couple. I don't see that happening just from the end and how fast everything happened and wrapped up with them. Which makes it really hard to forgive, for lack of a better word, the lack of romance here.

So overall this was a good story, the writing is great, and the characters are wonderful BUT I also can't ignore the glaring issue of a romance with hardly any romance at all.

***5 ‘Menace & Trouble’ Stars***

~ Audiobook review ~

Here are a couple of truth’s before starting this review.

I’m a total fangirl of Nalini Singh’s.
The Guild Hunter series is that series I listen too at least twice a year.
I’ve listened to Archangel’s Viper three times in a row and will probably continue to listen to it a few more times before my mind decides to give it a rest.

So with all of that stated it’s pretty obvious that I absolutely ADORED this book and all that happened in it, even crazy parts, but then again I knew I would. Ever since seeing Holly and Venom together in Archangel’s Blade I had that gut feeling that they would make the perfect, snarky, ‘other’ pair...as long as they didn’t kill each other in the process and when it was announced that there were going to be each other’s mates I swear I did a full on happy dance and I wasn’t disappointed in any way. It was all kinds of snarky and sassy fun with a huge dose of heart and drama that could only work in the intricate and deadly world of the Guild Hunter.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Holly I got to know in this book because when we last spent any time with her she was still pushing boundaries and trying to come to terms with what Uram had done to her and what her future would hold. In AV, she is still working on coming to terms with it, but she is more focused and grounded and not lashing out like a hormonal teenager. The snark and sass are still presented, and I thank the powers that be that they were, but I loved seeing the compassionate and thoughtful side of the woman who had a purpose beyond simple survival.

While I’ve always been intrigued with Venom, I will admit that it never got to the same level as that of Bluebell and Sparkle because while I loved his verbal barbs the emotional gut punch was never there to learn more about him but that all changed with this book. I was totally sucked into the vortex that is Venom. I loved how he never pulled his verbal punches and how much of the time they weren’t meant to wound, but to force their target to acknowledge the truths that he could see much more clearly than others expected and ones they were trying to avoid. But more than that it was the opportunity to finally get to see the heart that lay behind the sunglass and viper’s eyes, because that heart was much more compassionate and genuine than I ever thought possible.

As for their journey to their HEA. I expected the snark and was very happy that even as their antagonistic relationship evolved it that aspect never went away, but changed with them. What I was surprised by, pleasantly so, was the mutual respect they gave each other and how much they simply enjoyed being in the others company. That made it so easy to see how well they fit together and really needed to spend eternity with one another because there really was no one else in the world that could put up with either one of them. Their romance is a slow build one, but absolutely satisfying in every way possible.

I loved hanging out with the unique and crazy cast of characters that make up the Guild Hunter world whether they be members of the Seven, the Guild or those that are aligned with them in a mish mash of ways. It was fun to get a deeper understanding of the ties that bind them all together and getting updates on almost everyone. I’m quite interested to see where Ms. Singh will take the series with the way that both Archangel’s Heart and Archangel’s Viper ended since a couple of main storylines have been either ended or at least paused for now. I, like most, am dying for Bluebell and Sparkle to get there own books, but I’m all for making sure it’s the right time for their stories to be revealed.

As for the narrator, Justine Eyre. She is absolutely fabulous. I love the cadence and tenor of her voice and how she brings each character to life. She is spot on with each accent she performs and truly brings the emotions the characters are feeling to life.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Snakesy Made Sexy Stars
Reviewed in the United States đŸ‡ș🇾 on October 1, 2017

Nalini Singh has done the almost impossible and made a snakesy creature sexy. I’m not sure how she was able to pull it off but she totally did.

If you google ‘sexy snakes’ or ‘sexy snake creatures’ do you know what you get??? A bunch of naked or nearly naked women posing with snakes OR big breasted women with snake tails. There isn’t a dude in sight unless he has a tattoo of a snake on him somewhere. You also get that creepy American Horror Story Coven image

So snakesy creatures not super sexy, but she did it with Venom and Holly who isn’t really a snake but definitely has some weird stuff going on.

Holly, who used to go by Sorrow after she was abducted in book one and made into something other when the Angel Urim fed her his blood, has overcome part of that in the background during the last nine books and is now Holly again. I really wish we would have got a little more of that reclamation of her life on page but at least she is in a pretty good place mentally. She isn’t perfect, she went through hell and her body has a lot of changes to accept but I love that her family didn’t abandon her. Her mother is a trip.

*** “You’ve made up with your family?”
Holly nodded. “My mother lays a guilt trip on me every so often, though.” She folded her arms and imitated Daphne Chang’s scowl. “‘ Do you know how we felt? Do you, Holly? We raised you to know you were loved, that you could come to us with anything. And what do you do the first time you have a small problem but turn your back on your family! For shame!’”
Venom’s shoulders shook. “A small problem?”
“Oh, shut up.” But she was laughing, too. “That’s how she always puts it. As if waking up needing to drink blood to survive is the same as being fired from a job or having a car battery die.” Laughter turned into a smile. “She’s going to be mad at me forever, but she’ll love me while she’s mad at me.” ***

Venom has always been a bit of an enigma but he and Nassir are the same in that they are completely unique and so I was a little excited to get to know more about how Venom became the only snakelike vampire. Let’s just say that some Angels are more like demons in their cruelty.

Holly and Vemon together is a fun experience because of all the banter. They’ve been opposing forces for so long and she is so quick with a jibe here and jab there that you know when the feisty banter turns to passion it is going to be hot. Viperface is just as quick with a quip and teasing words to get under her skin. It is a pretty fun game overall.

*** “You play mean, Hollyberry. Like poison.”
Coming from anyone else, the latter words would’ve been an ugly insult. From Venom . . . “Did you just compliment me?” she asked, her mouth falling open. “Take it back!” She couldn’t deal with Venom being nice to her in any way, shape, or form.
“Of course,” he said, “your poison is nowhere near as venomous as mine.” ***

This was a fun addition to the Guild hunter series. I won’t go into much detail on the plot as it was basically about Holly dealing with what Urim left inside her.

There wasn’t much movement on the overall cascade plot arc but at least we find out about Mikala and the supposed pregnancy. The other area of a lot of interest for me was Vivek’s situation since becoming a vampire. We don’t get a lot of info but at least we get to see how he is doing since the change. There is also a little bit of Bluebell in here for all of you who are also longing for his book but not much. Sparkles gets a mention or two as well. I know there are a lot of people out there shipping those two
I’m not really one of them but I love the bromance between them. I’d really love to see Illium fall in love with a human again. But we will see how it all plays out.

And another Guild Hunter book was over all too quickly. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Archangel's Viper

I held out as long as I could, but I finally had to give in and read this one! Venom is probably my favorite of Raphael's Seven so when I heard that Nalini Singh had finally decided to write Venom's book, to say I was excited it putting it mildly.

Of course, there's always the trepidation of whether or not it will live up to expectations and I have to say, for me, YES it absolutely does.

The pairing of Holly (aka Sorrow) and Venom seems like such a natural choice honestly, although it wasn't one that I immediately figured on. Not until maybe a few books ago in the series where we learned that Venom had been working with Sorrow to hone the skills she developed since being attacked and changed by the archangel Uram.

In Archangel's Viper we see Holly still dealing with the aftermath of her attack and what it did to her mentally / emotionally, but moreso here in what it's doing to her physically. She's recently made the decision that she wants to live. That no matter what life has thrown at her at this point, she wants to try to move forward. This is a far cry from what we previously glimpsed of Holly the last time she popped up in the series (I wish I knew which book that was off the top of my head, alas, I don't). Now, however, we see that, besides changing Holly into a vampire, she's now starting to exhibit strange qualities which are most akin to Venom's abilities (although still unique unto Holly). When it seems like someone has put a bounty on Holly's head in order to acquire her uniqueness, she and Venom start a search for the mysterious person. This search, however, only leads us into an even bigger mystery that stems from that fateful day four years ago when an archangel went mad.

For his part, Venom has always been the cool and collected member of the Seven. He's at ease with the group that he has chosen to call his family, but that doesn't mean he's always felt like part of the group. His Making certainly set him apart from the vampire community, and he sees a lot of what he went through in his younger years when he sees what Holly is going through now. He sees someone who might be able to understand him. I loved the "new" we got to see in Venom's character. I loved that we get to delve into his past. I feel like there's always been this cloaking of mysteriousness around him (and around all the Seven honestly until they get their own books), and learning about his past was interesting and did a lot to make me love his character even more.

I loved Venom and Holly together from the first page to the last. Their relationship didn't start out as this hidden lust. It starts out kind of antagonistic (although I wouldn't really classify this as an enemies to lovers story). They love to push each other's buttons. The repartee they exchange throughout is fantastic. Holly definitely doesn't let Venom get the better of her often. I loved seeing how their feelings for each other slowly developed throughout the story. I didn't feel theirs was a scorching hot romance, instead it builds upon this base understanding of each other. I thought it was great, seeing the realization as each of them - at separate times - figures out that they care more for the other than simple friendship.

I really enjoyed that Archangel's Viper dealt with quite a few topics that have been kind of hanging out unanswered in this series since the first book. I feel like this story was a long time coming with all the pieces falling into place. The mystery of what is happening to Holly is intriguing and I thought satisfying in its conclusion.

I don't think I've ever been disappointed in anything that Nalini Singh has written and we can now add Archangel's Viper this list as well. A fitting story for my favorite of the Seven.

We've never really gotten to know Venom very well in the previous books. This is just FANTASTIC! I laughed and I sobbed and just keep hoping we'd get a HEA because they're not always guaranteed. This is actually a reread for me because there's a new one in the series coming soon but I find that even when they are about ancillary characters and not just Ellie and Rafael that they are more potent because it's a complete story that can be added on to as the over all keeps going but ultimately it is finished and we find out so much background that would never be possible in lead character stories that I really love learning about their childhood and what scarred them and how they came to be a family.
So happy we didn't lose Holly to her demons and depression and by helping the ones who fell through the cracks in the system and being a team with Janvier and Ashwini she was able to find herself after her horror.
So all in all this is a definite keeper and I'm just loving Venom and Kitty!

5.0 out of 5 stars Venom and Holly: A Love Story With A Bite
Reviewed in the United States đŸ‡ș🇾 on September 26, 2017

In the Guild Hunter series, readers have gotten to know Holly since Elena first rescued her from a brutal attack by the insane archangel Uram. Holly barely survived, and the attack changed her irrevocably not only in an emotional sense, but physically as well. Those changes have not stopped. Holly lives in constant fear of becoming a monster with no hope of redemption. Venom, the youngest in the Archangel Raphael’s private guard known as the Seven, survived his own monstrous transformation centuries ago. With his snakey eyes and poisonous fangs, Venom has always been one of a kind—as is Holly, for no one knows exactly what she is. Not entirely human, not exactly vampire, Holly, once known as Sorrow, is certainly very deadly. Venom and Holly have an adversarial relationship, though neither of them would admit it, they enjoy the physical and verbal sparring. Holly’s job for the Tower, under the direction of Ashwini, Janvier and, of course, Dmitri, involves working in the shadows and underbelly of the city where the higher-ups would not be welcome. When someone decides Holly is a prize to be had, she and Venom are forced to work as a team in the seamy places of New York to track down the ones who are foolish or arrogant enough to hunt anyone under the Tower’s protection.

Holly fights with every fiber of her colorful and eclectic being to hold back the dark and terrifying remnant of Uram, which somehow wants to take her over; and now, something or someone powerful is calling her to another archangel’s territory in a way that’s much too intense to be ignored. Possibly adding to the upsurge in Holly’s own abilities is the catastrophic effect known as the Cascade which has been amping up some angelic powers. This unpredictable force may not only apply to the top tier angels and archangels.

Even though she’s a strange hybrid with an unknown future, the most important thing to Holly is her humanity. Venom, with his cold reptilian inner being and poisonous abilities, thought he lost his ability to feel compassion or love centuries ago. But when this small spitfire of a girl refuses to give in to the horrors that nearly destroyed her, it awakens something inside him that he thought impossible and forever lost.

Fans of Ms. Singh will be well pleased with this fine addition to the series. It has everything wonderful we have come to expect: action, adventure, humor, and romance as well as being a very clever tale that will keep you guessing about exactly what is going on and how it will all play out until the very end. This story has just the right balance between the difficult and often dangerous world Holly and Venom inhabit and a love story that alleviates the violence and aggression. Their story has been building for quite some time so having it come to fruition is very satisfying. I absolutely, totally enjoyed all aspects of this book and while that may sound like hyperbole, the praise is much deserved.

Archangel’s Viper is back to the “romance with a new couple and a mystery” formula: up this installment are Holly and Venom. Holly was the gal from Book 1 that survived Uram’s reign of terror with the added gift of a little sumthin’-sumthin’ special inside of her courtesy of the deranged Archangel. Holly has felt a sense of “otherness” about her ever since she tangled with Uram and was force fed his toxic blood. She’s sort of a vampire with her little baby vamp teeth and she does need blood, but she also needs to eat food and she’s got some weird abilities – like super speed, the ability to mesmerize prey and she’s sort of boneless at times like Venom but not snakey. Holly is a one off; like Venom and Naasir – and since Naasir’s already taken – Venom is her obvious mate.

The only fly in the ointment is that the only thing Holly and Venom think they have in common is that they love antagonizing each other. Venom was assigned to “train” Holly after she was Made by Uram since there were similarities in their uniqueness and because Venom was immune to Holly’s ability to mesmerize. But then things went to pot in the immortal world and Venom needed to be re-assigned and their training sessions were reduced to weekly phone calls. Still, they kept their antagonism alive with mature taunts of Kitty and Hollyberry and Poison and Viper Face. Venom does notice the Holly seems to have grown up in the time he was away. She transitioned from traumatized victim to resilient survivor. (And thank goodness she is no longer going by the moniker Sorrow. She gave it up because it saddened her family – but I felt it in some ways trivialized her trauma as the whole “Call me Sorrow now” had a very adolescent emo feel to it.

Now that Venom is back it isn’t long before the mystery of the day takes over. Someone has a bounty on Holly’s head and the otherness inside her is fixin to split her chest open like the baby monster in Alien. I enjoyed the development of their relationship because I much prefer the enemies to lovers snarkfest over the sappy saccharine dessert bar. Holly was a strong character who was emotional but self-reliant and able to hold her own. Venom was the typical “I don’t do relationships” aloof but tortured because I’ve been hurt before hero. I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 not because I wanted the evolution of their relationship to have been in anyway different, but because I would have liked to have seen more development in their relationship. Not more lovey-dovey schmaltz that wasn’t them; just more time spent with them as a couple.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is almost like she is half vampire in ways

Venom is one of the Archangel Raphael's Seven, making him a very powerful individual. Venom is a vampire, but a very unique one. He was Made my the Archangel Neha who is the Queen of Poisons, and she has a fondness for snakes. She is very proud of Making Venom. He is unique among vampires, for he has a number of snake-like traits.

Holly survived a horrifying experience and near death at former Archangel Uram's hands. Since that experience she has been changed in many ways. It is almost like she is half vampire in ways; she needs blood to survive, but she also needs food. She is also similar to Venom in how she moves when she lets the otherness inside her loose and she is venomous. But with that otherness she is also experiencing dangerous voices in her head. She doesn't know if she is losing her mind or not, but she has a strong will to live and will not lose herself after working so hard to live.

Bounty Hunters are after Holly, and the question is why? Best that can be figured is it must have to do with her affiliation with Uram and her uniqueness among vampires. Though there are similarities to Venom, she is a mystery in the angel world that cannot be completely understood. Now someone is looking to capture her, but to what ends?

In order to make sure Holly is guarded, Venom is assigned to her. This is frustrating for Holly, but she isn't one to cut off her nose to spite her face; she knows people are after her, and Venom is scary strong and good to have at one's back. There is a lot of antagonism between Holly and Venom, but that just makes them more fun to experience. Being stuck together gives them a chance to really go at each other.

The romance here is a slow build. There are glimpses early on in the book, but the characters need the time to get to know each other before that next step even becomes a possibility. It's not for everyone, but I enjoy watching how the relationship evolves from a bickering banter to a more united companionship. And the wittiness of the dialogue is the best part.

Though probably not my favorite Nalini Singh novel, this one is solid. Venom and Holly each have some personal obstacles to overcome, and they work together to get it done. Outside of the romance, the story is interesting. The world Ms. Singh has created with the angels and vampires is very interesting. Though convoluted at times, and some questions continue to hang in the air, she keeps you on your toes. Vampire junkies and freeloading angels are just a part of this sophisticated world she takes us to and I love revisiting it.
