4.0 out of 5 starsNot As Good As Volume 1

3 AND 1/2 STARS

This second anthology of the "Year's Best Hardcore Horror" is clearly not as good as the first book, with only a handful of standouts. The best stories were considerably better than the rest, with few exceptions. The very best were "A Face In The Crowd" by Tim Waggoner, "Kozmic Blues" by Alessandro Manzetti, and "Bed Of Crimson Joy" by Jasper Bark, with a couple Honorable Mentions by Michael A. Arnzen and Wrath James White.

The introduction by the editors felt like an excuse to lower reader expectations by trying to water down the description of what "Hardcore" means. This transparent excuse was only added to explain why quite a few stories were even included in the anthology. I was scratching my head at what was selected, as it was obvious many should not have been chosen at all. When stories are included that my grandmother could read, it probable should not be part of a "Hardcore" anthology. Mild recommendation for the authors I previously mentioned, but I hope volume 3 is an improvement over this one.

The first tale 55ways was utterly RETARDED!!!!!

I completely removed this pile of crap from my kindle as the second tale was lackluster. While not full blown retarded as the first tale, it was pretty stupid.

The reason I gave up early is that I had little hope for the rest of the book if the first two tales were horrid. Especially with this titled as "the best."

I would be pissed if I paid for this!

Saw a meme going around recently, some sort of ‘how much of a literary snob are you’ thing, and I could only laugh. I mean, okay, it didn’t help I was deep into a back-to-back read of these two volumes of the extreme of the extreme.

Oh, the classic, the quiet, the elegant, the subtle and poetic and discreet
oh, the crass crude pulp wallowing in violence, sex, and gore
surely nobody would enjoy BOTH! Surely. Yeah right. But, wait! I’ll let you in on a secret here – if you get lucky, with the right blend of writers, stories, and talents, you can have it all in the same delightful package.

That’s what you get here. Not in every tale, to be sure; some of them are the full glorious bellyflop into viscera and atrocity, guaranteed to make even the hardiest reader cringe. Others, though, others transcend, taking things to a higher level. Elevating it, as they say on the cooking shows.

No wonder, though, when you look at the lineups of authors. Wrath James White is here, the undisputed master of primal sexpain and kink. So’s the leading lady of the extreme, Monica J. O’Rourke. Anything by either of them will haunt you forever. Powerhouses like Tim Waggonner, Kristopher Triana, and Adam Cesare, too.

And the titles! No other genre can pull off titles like “Bath Salt Fetus,” or “King Sh*ts” with such aplomb. No other genre can get away with sheer ickiness like Tim Miller’s “Backne” or Pete Kahle’s agonizing “Where the Sun Don’t Shine.”

Of them all, my personal favorite is “55 Ways I’d Prefer Not To Die” by Michael A. Arnzen; it brings – of all things – whimsy to a series of flinchworthy and all-too-relateable scenarios. It pairs well with stark contrast to Stephanie M. Wytovich’s gorgeously done crimson-drenched vignettes in “On This Side of Bloodletting;” those two alone are shiver-fuel for a year.

If you approach these books like some compilation of torture porn, surgical videos, and gross jokes
well, you’ll probably still have a fantastic time. You’ll just be missing out on some nuance. Take your time. Appreciate. Enjoy.

Just hurry and catch up, because I hear Volume 3 is on the way soon!

The overarching theme of YEAR’S BEST HARDCORE HORROR VOLUME 2 is quantity over quality. This doesn’t make it a bad book, but many of its stories sacrifice plot for rote, graphic imagery. Hardcore horror, as it’s presented in this collection, isn’t dissimilar to hardcore pornography. Who cares about the pizza guy’s internal dialogue when the customer’s door opens to reveal a woman wearing nothing but heels and a smile? We just want to see them get it on. That’s YBHHV2, in large part: to Hell with the story; let’s fast forward to the gross parts.

Michael A. Arnzen’s 55 Ways I’d Prefer Not to Die is the first story in the collection, and exemplifies quantity over quality so well that I can’t believe that its placement was an accident. The story’s title says it all. Stephanie M. Wytovich’s Selected Poems from The Brothel, in the author’s own words, “takes off the patriarchal blindfold.” So it’s got that going for it. Wytovich’s second offering in the collection is On This Side of Bloodletting, and continues the theme of gross images without a story. Eric LaRocca also goes for horror vignettes with Miss_Vertebrae, a series of emails.

Wrath James White’s Ownership was an interesting setting in search of a story. If you’re a fan of verbiage like “Integrating with downflowing lacrimae,” you’ll quite like Jeremy Thompson’s The Hallowfiend Remembers. Marvin Brown’s The Field mixes American racial politics and horror for the lucky reader who appreciates that sort of thing. A Face in the Crowd by Tim Waggoner was short, but fans of the crane game will dig it. Christa Carmen’s The Girl Who Loved Bruce Campbell was unabashed Ash vs Evil Dead fanfic, which you can tell from the title.

You’ll find a bit of science fiction mingled with this volume’s horror offerings. Alexandra Renwick’s Redux does the trick, but Harold Ramis did it better. Andrew Darlington’s Coming of the Darkula, with plenty of graphic sex scenes, definitely puts the emphasis on coming. Tim Miller’s story Backne has a disgusting build-up without a satisfying conclusion. Implant by Bryan Smith is one of those brief tales that you’ll either find memorable or you won’t. And Adam Cesare shines a light on the search for internet fame in Please Subscribe (I found the hermit crab “trick” to be the most horrific part of the story).

William Grabowski’s Out Hunting for Teeth is my favorite story in the collection. If you’ve never read bizarro fiction, it’s an excellent introduction to the genre. American Gods, American Monsters by Jose Cruz delves into obsession and urban legend, making both relevant. There’s a trippy, disturbing surrealism to Stephanie Elrick’s story Mother’s Nature that you won’t soon forget.

Italy is well-represented with Paolo Di Orazio’s The Contract: horrific and hallucinatory and hard to read for all the right reasons. Alessandro Manzetti’s futuristic, bizarre Kozmic Blues keeps you hooked through the last page
literally.

Little Sister, Little Brother by Sarah L. Johnson is a little long, but combines familial love and physical intimacy in a way that makes you feel dirty for liking it. You’re a fan of Jasper Bark, right? Bark’s Bed of Crimson Joy will make you a fan, whether you want to be or not. Matthew Chabin’s disquieting Father of Dread takes themes that Robert W. Chambers made famous in The King in Yellow and updates them.

Every story in the collection includes notes from the author, which you may or may not find welcome. So what makes horror “hardcore”? Is it the blood? The pus? The screams? The body count? Or is it what the publisher says it is? However you define it, you’ll definitely find some hardcoreness in this collection. And if it’s not hardcore enough for you, let me know so I can stay far away.

*I requested and was granted an audible code for this audio edition*
This. This is not for the faint of heart, y’all. It’s a deliciously macabre collection. I was super into a lot of them, and started off making short reviews of each story, but only got through 3. Sorry! Part of the reason I like audio books is so that I can do household chores, drive, go for a walk or jog, or go fishing while I listen to the book, so I wasn’t able to keep track. I WILL give you the few I did get, though! With no further ado:

Chapter 4 is AMAZING. I think it was called Gods and Monsters. The Editor’s dogged obsession was intriguing to listen to, and I did not see that twisted ending coming! Very well done, and super creeptastic. Quite possibly my favorite of the entire collection.
Chapter 5, Mother Nature, is trippy. It’s very well written and puts me in the mindset of a fever driven nightmare. I liked it!
Don’t remember what chapter this one was, but it was too much for me. Not the gore or language, but the sex got too violent for me. Not saying there was anything wrong with it, and it felt well written, but I ended up skipping the ending because I’m a wuss lol.
Overall, this is a mixed bag. Some murder, some paranormal, some BDSM, all horrifying and beautiful in their own rights. Some weren’t exactly for me, but I’d be hard pressed to find a collection that WAS made up entirely of books any one person loved. And even the ones that weren’t up my alley were well written and I knew they were good.

The narrator did a wonderful job, he seemed to know all of the stories and had a steady pace. Nice voice and tension, as well.
If you like horror, REAL horror and tales from the darkest corners, if you can handle gore, terror, and short servings of all of these – and if you are over 18! – I would definitely recommend this for you.

Bob says: 4 Platypires!
